  • Alex had muddy gloves for a couple of weeks for this one. With some serious updates for 2021, the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R was pointed towards some local green lanes and byways ready to explore. Or rather, ‘Ready to Race’.
    The adventure motorcycle with its LC8 V-twin could be one of Alex’s favourite to ride recently, but let’s not ruin the video!

    Best bike i have ever owned in 30years.Had a 990 and 950 before. Offroad this is so much better. At least give it a test ride. You will be amazed. 😁👌

      do you feel its the smoother throttle that makes the bike better offroad? im considering one of these after owning 2 990s

      @Aby Mathew in the genre of "feeling young again" the 890 fits better as is - still fast &way more manageable in weight. Unless by "older" you mean like 35-40 then nvm 😆

    23 litres... 200 miles... 39.5 mpgUK. Its the power and size of this bike that I'd love on the road, off road though - it's still heavy to move about and way above my skill level. This guy seems to handle it pretty well though. Good review, thanks mate

      That’s how I feel after riding many smaller bikes off road. Can you ride it off road? Yes! Will it be a lot of hard work and hard to pick up? Yes
      I chose a SAS and have chosen to do more touring and occasional dirt roads.

    2022 SAR 12,500 miles. Chris Birch can do amazing things on this bike, as shown in the video. I use this bike for two up camping. Needs stiffer rear spring. Still not available. This undersprung rear makes for sketchy off road riding when heavy. Road handling is fair. Brakes are sub par. Turn indicator switch and auto program are beyond horrible. I hope to continue to work bugs out of it. If you plan to ride heavy, get the GS. I love my 790 Rally and 500 exc. I don't love this bike. I will keep it, because I bleed orange.

    Aside from the horrendous lower crash bar design (I learned this one the hard way) I have enjoyed mine. Those lower crash bars need to be replaced immediately for anyone doing any significant off-road riding. The factory lower crash bars on the previous R models were well designed and did their job.

    • @The3osforos
      @The3osforos ปีที่แล้ว

      What happened?

    • @williamb.6918
      @williamb.6918 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@The3osforos A sub 10 MPH drop on a trail led to the left crash bar slipping down along the frame (a known issue). This caused the crash bar to no longer be braced (the previous design attached to the frame at two points instead of one and does not have this issue). Since the crash bar was no longer braced properly it buckled. This caused the front portion of the crash bar near the skid plate to press into the skid plate and the upper lip of the skid plate caught both the left tank and the left radiator. In total about 4K in damage including labor for a trail crash at 1/3 the speed my 1090 had experienced numerous times with no more damage than a broken lever or mirror. To add insult to injury the parts are simply not available so the bike has been waiting on parts for nearly 3 months at this point.

    • @freidrichnietzsche6643
      @freidrichnietzsche6643 ปีที่แล้ว

      William, appreciate the insight. Can you share what parts you replaced to fix the problem or did put new factory parts on??! Thanks mate!

    • @williamb.6918
      @williamb.6918 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@freidrichnietzsche6643 The best replacement crashbar solution currently available for the new 1290 is the one provided by Outback Motortek. They did a pretty good job of explaining the problem (one of the previous mount points is now behind the tank so it cannot be used like on the older 1090/1190/1290 models). I still do not understand how this could have possibly made it out of KTM QA. I talked to another owner who had the factory crash bar bend on a stationary drop in the mud which is simply mind boggling for something that is meant to protect the bike in the event of your typical low speed crashes many adventure bikes see. I also see that after saying the 790/890 tank was strong enough to survive the typical crashes an adventure rider may see that KTM has suddenly come up with a Power Parts skid plate to protect it and folks like Chris Birch are running that. It seems these newer models might be readyish to race, but they certainly are not ready to crash out of the box anymore.
