2023 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S five day review- is this the bike of your dreams?

  • The 2023 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is marketed as a true trans continental weapon, there to transcend countries and make our journey global. Add on the KTM Ready to Race ethos and that's a potentially potent mix. What's it like in real life and is it truly a new bike, or just a few minor changes but a new year?

I used Rally Mode for the first time...OOOF...it was a beast! I live in the Arkansas Ozarks and I think sportbike riders would be amazed at how the 1290 SAS can eat up a curvy road. Icing on the cake is the suspension; bumps and imperfect pavement just disappear. Even with my current Shinko 705s (radial version), she hauls. The 705s do a decent job on dirt and gravel. The 1290 SAS is just one of the best do-it-all motorcycles I have ever owned. Living in a Harley-saturated part of the country, they just look at rhe 1290 like it's an alien craft, but riders in the know give it proper respect.

One other thing to mention is that the quickshifter mechanism is internal. There are no external linkages or solenoids to break if you fall over or get mucked up if you are on a muddy road.

I have a 2021 1290SAS, I do quite a lot of gravel roads. Mine has crash bars, sump guard, radiator guards, lever guards all off the R model. I have E10 tires on it. I won't be doing proper off roading, so for me it's a better compromise than the R model. The adjustable suspension, and the adaptive cruise control for me make it a better option.

HI Rorge and thanks for watching- sound like you have a great solution there- I think the electronically adjustable suspension on the bike is a real winner.

I think with the smoothness of the ride is because originally on the 2021 and 2022 there was 2 mappings put on the bike the first was the original but because of the euro 5 regulations they had the restricted mapping put on i had my ktm 1290 sas 2022 remapped by bhpuk in Burnley and the gains were 75% better throttle response and mid range low range pulls much better less vibration through foot pegs and seat handlebars.

My E10 tires are on the factory rims, for gravel roads they seem to be fine. Love the bike

E10 is fine for front and rear- my mistake was asking for an E13 to be fitted on the front and not personally checking it had a tube fitted as well!

i jave the 2023 superadvanture s, and i ride twisty roads, wheelie the hell out of it and i ride it on trails dirt roads, forsts any where i can get it to fit. its all about what your capable of doing and skill level. superadvanture r is definitely better option for offroadz but if your going to be riding offroad all the time then neither r nor the s is for that. smaller bike better. s is the best of all worlds.

Great motorcycle, just fell in love when I tried 2022 from a friend. Currently riding CFMOTO 800MT it is also great, but I miss that power that KTM gives you instantly! Great video 👍

Great review-Had a 2022 1290SDG for a short time - loved the bike when it was not back at the dealer or broken down. Unfortunately a mate had similar experience on his SAR. Formidable bikes but unreliable and poor OEM support so will pass for a while.

Brilliant review, as always. Thank you. You prosper that there might not be the perfect bike? Try 2023 890. Smaller but similar body to 1290s, adjustable suspension which is a hoot when you soften to go off-road, and extremely stable on roads like it’s more planted than a 1290….. maybe this is it? 😊

I agree- I've just spent the weekend on the 890 and covered a lot of very wet miles on and off road and it just get's more brilliant. I've fallen in love with the 890 R even more.

Hi I am in that position where I am considering a replacement for my 790Adv R but most of my riding is commuting to work and yet my goal is to do more off road, ideally the UK TET sections. Do I go for a 1290 Adv S or R or do I go for the 890 Adv R? Your thoughts are most welcome.

Good mate of mine has bought a spoked wheelset and tyres for offroad and used it on some of the rallymoto rallies and its been spot on tbf so can def be an all things if need be - personally I think the 1290SAR is the better all roads bike

I have the spoked wheel set too. A great addition - I’ve fitted more off road tyres on them so I have both wheel/tire options. Easy to swap them around too. I would fully recommend this - I don’t have the extra discs as they are so easy to remove and refit.
