  • Project Mommobile: Transmission Inspection
    By Brian Gillespie
    While we had the K24 out of Project Mommobile we inspected the TSX transmission. Since we didn't know how the car was driven before we found it in a salvage yard, it would have totally sucked to install it and then find out there was a problem. On more than one occasion we've found a broken gear teeth because the car was in gear when the crash occurred. Besides possible broken parts and worn synchros, these manual transmissions also have a problem that is unique to the TSX. Vigorous driving will stretch the magnesium cases causing problems with the bearing seats.
    Follow along as Carter and ace Honda mechanic Doug Ruthroff get deep into this tranny. Despite our poor phrasing you'll find a butt-load of good information in this video if you're interested in checking out a tranny of your own in the privacy of your own garage.

    Doug is a hell of a buddy to have around! I have never had that good of a luck taking the case apart or getting the case to go back together. I have only took them apart a handful of times but Jesus wish Doug was closer to me I have a rsx and ep3 tyranny in my garage that needs his help! God bless guys thanks for the videos!

    Learned on my own with B series and the factory DA manual. But now im thinking about doing the same with my nsn4 trans being I have driven the car 100k miles and will do a clutch soon. This video certainly helps me prepare. Have you guys thought about doing a video on k series timing component replacement? Main weakness with these motors seem to be the hydraulic chain tensioner, of course.

    "Vigorous driving will stretch the magnesium cases causing problems with the bearing seats.” I could be mistaken, but you really didn’t touch on this much in the video. I recently purchase a 2005 TSX and I’m experiencing a lot of “slack” on acceleration/deceleration when in any gear. Despite it having new motor mounts all around, there seems to a lot of “movement” happening no matter how lightly I get back on the gas after I’ve been decelerating. There’s a noticeable "jerk” and the more I read, it sounds like it could have something to do with this stretching that takes place with these transmissions. What would be the primary symptom of this issue and what would you recommend doing to fix it? I see some people swap the housing out for an aluminum version from the accord/newer TSX. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • @crannyscustoms
    @crannyscustoms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What your calling the mainshaft is actually the counter shaft. The input shaft is the mainshaft. Another thing I noticed is I usually use the old mainshaft bearing to tap in new one cause they are counter sunk a tad. You may have done this and didnt show it. Nice work man.

    • @VTECAcademy
      @VTECAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it will just use your tsx guts in the 03-07 USDM accord 2.4 5 speed manual case
      . same case as the CL7 Euro R. part # 21200-RAP-000

  • @timwilliams4739
    @timwilliams4739 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the issue with the magnesium make the transmission break axles? Or would you think that's just from engine mounts being bad?

    • @VTECAcademy
      @VTECAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could I have some more information? How were the axles breaking?

    • @timwilliams4739
      @timwilliams4739 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate the reply. I just picked up an 05 tsx cheap because it was breaking axles. The guy I bought it from couldn't figure it out. I asked this In the beginning because I was kind of worried there would be a problem with the transmission because I couldn't drive it. But, since then I was able to tear into it. The bottom mounts were GONE as in not there. And the plastic top mount was broken. The whole transmission was lifting up and was putting the axles in a bind. So I figured it out now. But moving forward how would I know if it has the common magnesium transmission issue?

  • @sonnymendoza9654
    @sonnymendoza9654 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok analogy but just take away the reason that you suggest to replace the mainshaft bearing because its tucked in last. Because once you spread the transmission clam youre good in for the rest of the bearings as they are easy to work on. No hard access whatsoever like your pointing out

      Of course. One time Brian was showing some Honda execs a K swapped Fit he did by taking them for a drive. Toyota USA used to be practically next door to American Honda and on the drive they stopped at a red light in front of Toyota headquarters. When the light turned green Brian did a smokey burnout across the intersection. #truestory #wehavefun

      For fucks sake, we aren't claiming to rebuild, it didn't need it. We were inspecting it and replacing worn parts. The only thing we really had to replace were some seals. We replaced one bearing as a precaution. Although we will be rebuilding an RSX Type S trans in the future. I invite you back to comment again.
