@@JenniferGlatzhofer What makes it even worse is that they were within sight of home. When Aeolus was looking through her telescope and there was a city....that was home! Auuugh!
Gigi's animatic really emphasizes it too by having Aeolus look at the castle first through their telescope before panning down to Odysseus, but by the time the crew opened the bag they were WITHIN SIGHT of Ithaca.
8:56 Jen, to make it hurt more. Remember, if Polities was alive that's someone that Odysseus could have trusted and they could have taken turns sleeping.
fun fact time: in the og mythology Aeolus is male. Jorge said that anyone can audition and if he likes the potential actor, he can make sure they fit it in, and that's how we got a genderbend here. And out of everyone Aeolus - literal wind entity- makes the most sense to be fully blindcast, they can be whatever they feel like in the moment. In this case a gremlin queen with amazing vocals
Looking at old KYFC snippets, I think they even changed the key to fit Kira's voice better! This is what I love about EPIC the most, the community being a part of the process.
Strictly speaking, I believe they still refer to Aeolus as a god and he rather than a goddess and she! (Definitely the former, haven't double checked the latter!) But they're a god, so they can take whatever form, really.
Don’t think anyone else mentioned it, so I’m going to. At 10:00 you can see Telemachus’s face is blurred. This is because this scene takes place in Ody’s head, but Odysseus doesn’t actually know what Telemachus looks like, as he hasn’t seen him since he was a baby. I nearly cried when I first noticed
It’s also why Telemachus’ voice is quieter and more distance when him and Penelope are singing to Odysseus to keep his eyes open…he doesn’t know what Telemachus actually sounds like, so the focus is more on the voice he knows
First half: fun dancing, playful mischievous vibes. Second half: WHY DID YOU OPEN THE GODFORSAKEN BAG. Also a snippet of an amazing yet terrifying voice
In the original myth it is made EXTREMELY clear just how close they are during this song, they can literally see their home with the naked eye, the people on island can see their fleet returning when the bag is opened and a giant storm comes out of nowhere and pushes them away.
6:53 the "winions" (aeolus's minions) and the lotus eaters are actualy the same group, thats why they sound so similar. they look different in the two animatics of course because their drawn by two different people, but if I remember correctly jorge has confirmed that the lotus eaters were winions who got seperated and hooked on lotus fruit
Fun fact: when making the songs for this saga, mr.jalapeño thought the floating island was literal in the sky. But in the odyssey, what it actually is an island in the ocean that does not connect to the ocean floor
To be honest, I feel like Aeolus just woke up at the beginning and that’s part of the reason it only gets fuller later. Because the way the flutes pick up after Odysseus starts talking to her. It’s as if the flutes played a lullaby until then.
You know what hurts the most? in the Odyssey, they open the bag right as Ithaca comes into view. They were literally almost home and then they get blown all the way back. I believe that in a demo of Penelope's song, she mentions this storm, so she literally sees the storm take Odysseus away from her. So close yet so far, almost as bad as Orpheus and Eurydice (iykyk 😭)
So fun fact for you, Jen. These little flying creatures are called Winions and yes, they are the same creatures from Lotus Island. They are mischief makers and love getting others in trouble. Hence the "scary cave" they sent Ody to and now telling the crew it's treasure to get them eager to open the bag. Hope that helps
also fun fact, after the dream with Penelope, the songs come back in the order of Keep Your Friends Close, Storm, and then Full Speed Ahead. Almost like the lot of them are going all the way back to square one where this saga started :D
One of the reasons why the crew opened the bag was because aeolus and their winions were spreading rumors and doubt while they were singing, basically taking the initial doubts during luck runs out and amplifying it through the spreading rumors and eventually leading to the bag opening
Yep! However, thanks to the remakes of Troy and Cyclops, her voice does make an appearance CHRONOLOGICALLY earlier in Horse and the Infant (When Zeus is telling Odysseus that he can say goodbye to… penELOpeeeeee, she’s in the chorus). I understand you mean the first time she’s shown up in real time, just thought I’d mention it!
Something that isnt really emphasized in this song, but is true, is that Ithica (their home) is IN SIGHT when they open the bag. The bag then sends them far, far away from it, increasing the journey.
Ok ok ok so the line "everythings changed since polites" actually has ALOT of significance. Throughout this musical, were supposed to mostly only have the same amount of information as odyseuss has, this include the line being a bit foggy as to when he falls asleep. However, this line is a BIG indication that something isnt right, because whenever the crew/ensemble speaks, its either directly to odyseuss or an echo of someone else. This line isnt something they do or would say to him! Its more like whispers around him. This line helps shows that since they arent speaking directly to him, the lines are starting to blur between sleep and reality!
They sound similar because they are all the same kind of creature! Some of the Winions, Aeolus's silly little friends, ate the Lotus fruit and those were the Lotus eaters we met in Open Arms. If I'm not mistaken, a fuzzy little creature is the canon appearance of the Winions.
What makes it worse is they were really close to home if they had just waited until they got off the ship they would have been home free what else is bad is Odysseus’ mom witnessed them getting suddenly blown away and thinks her son is dead now
"Why didn't they just listen?" Protagonist syndrome. *We* know what's going on. They didn't. They saw their friends murdered, a weird storm has happened. Captain comes down, people starts saying "It's treasure and the captain won't let us open it." It's in the song. "Now they wanna get the bag open so they can have closure"
I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet but the reason they bring up how much things have changed since polities died, is because he was the kind one of the group as we well know, and he tried to level out Odysseus (smoothing out his rougher edges and maybe making it to where the crew can trust him a little better) and since he died it's a lot harder for the crew to trust Odysseus because his worst qualities are starting to come out again (we don't necessarily see that but the chorus itself would lead me to believe that)
Polites is also the only person in the crew that Odysseus will listen to 3 people get Odysseus to change his mind as of the Thunder Saga - Zeus (kill this child or he will kill your loved ones) - Tiresias (tho thats on Ody for misunderstanding) - Polites (gets him to consider relaxing/not seeing every stranger as a potential threat) And we _know_ Odysseus seriously considers Polites' words because Athena IMMEDIATELY dropkicks him into the mindscape to yell at him about it After Polites, Odysseus does not listen to/is swayed by another person until Tiresias
Let me make your day worse. The kingdom was within eyesight before the crew opened the bag. The audacity of the crew god damn it. Also a certain someone (not Penelope or Telemachus) saw the boats arrive and leave. This is not a spoiler as it's not told in the songs and unless you know the why it's an important fact, you can't really figure out anything useful. Just keep in mind, I will mention it again when it becomes and important fact.
Aeolus told him that sometimes killing is a must and that the end justifies the means. He didn't listen. Also, the ending here might be one of the most terrifying moments in the whole of Epic.
the crew was already losing trust in odysseus in "luck runs out" since most of the conversation between odysseus and eurylochus happened in front of the crew. so of course they weren't going to trust odysseus when he says the bag has the wind trapped when the people(?) who gave him the bag tells everyone it's treasure
I wouldn't say that Aeolia is the most trustworthy character, the god sets this up as a game/bet and uses the winons to whisper to the crew that it's treasure and goads them on. Anyway, I love that you, appreciate both music and the brief sweetness of the story❤❤
Seeing people listen to EPIC the first time through is always so enjoyable. This has been my obsession for 2 years, it's so good, Jorge is a genius. Love the reaction, can't wait till you get all the way to the Thunder saga!
“Aeolus is the most trustworthy” no! She set him up, she told him to keep the bag closed and spread a rumor among the crew that it was treasure. Odyssey’s “what” when the little wind dudes say “it’s treasure” perfectly conveys his realization of this
To be fair, Odysseus flat out _refused_ to engage with his crew's concerns/doubts. It makes sense their trust in him would only wane further & watching him guard that bag with his life could have only made their mistrust in him grow even more. This could have been avoided if he'd been more of a team player in "Luck Runs Out" & actually _adressed_ his crew's concerns Sidenote, this (and "Luck Runs Out") are one of my best friend's favorite songs in the entire musical!
I don't know if Jorge has confirmed this, but since human characters backing vocals are other humans around them typically, when Odysseus is falling asleep I think it's the crew lulling him to sleep with the melodic singing of Telemachus and Penelope
This song by far one of my top favs from the entire Epic musical. The Wind God, historically portrayed in mythos as male, is voiced by a female in this adaptation was a nice change. Though personally the tone of voice especially paired with this animatic has always registered as androgynous to me. But regardless they are by far my fav character. Their personality is so playful and mischievous, I could listen to them sing for hours happily.
Jorge's version of the story is - hilariously - far worse than what happened in the original poem by Homer. In that version, Odysseus didn't meet Aeolus the Wind God, but King Aoelos (yes - spelling is important here), a mortal king. The bag needed to be kept sealed but when the crew were in sight of Ithaca is when the bag was open. Rather than blowing the crew off to the Land of the Giants, it blew them back to King Aeolos' island where Ody begged for another bag of storms. The king refused on the ground that Ody's crew were too dumb or too cursed to get another, so he sent them on their way and they ended up turned around and landed in the Land of the (Cannibalistic) Giants (FULL SPEED AHEAD!). Hopefully this doesn't end TOO badly now that Jorge changed where they ended up in the Musical, right?

I mean not trusting the gods in greek mythology is never the wrong move per se... Oh and Jorge does the Winions too if I remember right... and the Lotus Eaters. They bring Polites up because before that the entire crew considered Odysseus as infallible, Polyphemus taught them he's... just a man. "Why did they do that?" Because Eurylochus introduced discord and doubt by openly questioning Ody... also the Winions (I think that's what they're called) said there was treasure in the bag, and they wanted some.
For "Ruthlessness" I recommend Gigi's over AnniFlamma. AnniFlamma is great, on par with Gigi's (definetly worth the watch), but the continuity works better after watching Gigi's "Keep Your Friends Close". I also think Gigi's ending is slightly better.
