i haven't painted for over 18 months and I just love your loose impression of this dog, i have it outlined on canvas as I write and will have a go, love the way you teach and the music is not over bearing at all. Thank you.
Thank you Christina! Enjoy getting back into your paints. This was one of our very first videos, so make sure you watch many more on my NettieKStudio channel. At this point there are over 60 videos! Nettie k
I paint animals now because of you. Only for fun. You always remind me of not going light too soon. Hopefully this helps me do the same with portraits. Never stop having fun.
Thank you Patrick, I am just finding all my messages! Oh dear. I hope you are still painting animals! I took a bit of time off from filming and am now doing some catching up. My next video on painting a deer should be up in a few days! Keep painting, Nettie Kaye
Thank you for sharing your painting expertise! Painting animals is so difficult for me! Oh, how I labor trying to paint one!!! But it seems so easy for you! I SO love your doggie painting! And I love that you did not simply duplicate the photo to its exactness, even though it looks very much like it. Photos are often used by many artists only as a source of reference to which they can add their own unique "flavor," and I feel that's what you did here! Wonderful! Thanks again!
Thank you Adlin. The longer I paint, the more "interpretive" I want to become. If I fuss about with tight detail, I am usually much less satisfied with the outcome!
Thanks! This was one of our first videos. All continuing videos are in real time with instruction. Make sure you go to NettieKStudio channel and click on videos to see all 60 videos!
Thanks for the input. My family is always in a bit of a discussion as to the attention span of the viewer. I enjoy doing the longer videos, but out of concern that I might bore the socks off of viewers, I speed things up! Personally, I like to listen to artists in great detail as well. The next video will be in real time. I'll be covering how to create the illusion of transparent glass in oil. Let me know if you all have any questions. Nettie Kaye
seriously if their attention span is that short let them watch other videos !! there are so many tutorials that look amazing but kind of miss the point about them being a teaching aid. I have no real talent but I can learn skills, please continue with your teaching, one middleaged non talented kiwi would like to learn more
Thank you Brenda. This was one of the very first successful videos we produced! Still one of the most watched! Are you related to Jose Trujillo? He is such a talented artist. Nettie Kaye
NettieKStudio Hi! No relation with Jose Trujillo. I’m a hobby artist using water colors, acrylics, charcoal and pastels. I’m mediocre at best but I so enjoy working on projects. I wish I had some of Jose Trujillo’s DNA so that I might have inherited some of his art skills. Haha. Love your videos, and I’m looking forward to watching more as you post. Have a lovely spring and summer!
@@brendatrujillo2666 Thank you Brenda! I am not as fast as Jose, but I do try to explain things so that hopefully you can try them at home! Thanks so much for watching! I think my next attempt will be a sailboat on our lake.
Raw Sienna, Yellow ochre, white, and transparent orange or Indian Yellow are great colors to use. Watch the video on painting a golden retriever. It should give you some great hints! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Solomon. Your work is wonderfully lively:) Hope you keep painting and filming too:) I've gotten serious and done 6 videos in the last month! Go go go!
thank you for making thisyour video with careful instructions, it's most helpful for a novice like me. I'd like to paint a dog portrait (of an English Spaniel) on a 12x12 canvas, should i include the body or just paint the head shot of the dog. Also, which style & size of brush would you recommend for my case? I'll be using Water mixable oil paints.
If you do a square canvas, just the head is great. A rectangular canvas is better for the entire body. As for the brushes, I love the Dick Blick Scholastic White brushes...with the blue handle. They are really inexpensive and hold their shape nicely. I don't like using expensive brushes...as I am not great at taking care of them! The brushes I use for hair are the filbert shaped brushes. The larger the brush the softer the effect. If you are looking for every hair, then go with some smaller brushes. Start with the larger brush to lay in the tone and then use the small brushes for a few hairs of detail. Good luck! Send me a pic of your progress! Nettie K
@@jobagirl I don't have this one fully recorded. It was one of our first art videos, so we were experimenting! Oh boy. There are several dog videos on my channel and I plan to do more...I will be painting my little white Coton de Tulear dog, pretty soon in real time! (no cuts!) Stay tuned.
Just love this. I’ve been wanting to paint my sisters dog (Chinese crested powderpuff) she is white and fluffy. Trying to figure out your colors. Is that Naples yellow on your pallet?
Thank you Tracy...When I paint a white dog, I will make three puddles of whites. One mixed with a tiny bit of lavender, One with a tiny bit of Naples yellow or Yellow Ochre, and the third puddle is White with either a drop of teal or Viridian. I work the colors back and forth and in different tonal values, (dark, middle, light), to get an interesting, and dimensional white effect. Take a look at my new video on the Bulldog and Boxer Snoozing...part Two. It shows how I work with the variations. Hope that helps!
the reason for the stains on the mouth is due to minerals in the saliva its actually a sign you need to wash the dog and maybe change their bowl to a ceramic bowl and clean it more frequently
Love the way you paint and your instructions, want to try a dog that looks much like this for the first. Was really disappointed when you did the loud music and speed up I would have loved to have been able to watch and listen to you.. I don't understand why you had to do that to your video, would have loved to have learned from all of it. Its been a couple of days and I think you use that same loud music on some of your other videos and only run a few mins. Such a shame you are such a good artist and teacher. I subscribed to you, think a lot more people would if you would consider what I suggested. Newbies like me old and retired and not about to get out love to find a really good artist like you to learn from. Many thanks!
Thank you Patty. I am glad you are interested in more details. I do get concerned that people have a super short attention span. The actual time it took to complete the dog painting was close to an hour. It is a lot of just fussing with paint...so I speed it up. I am planning to do a new video in real time on the transparency of glass in oil paint soon. I'll make a longer version available to those who would like to study seriously. Thanks so much for your interest. Stay tuned!
Hi Patty...I am finishing up another dog painting video! Only 2 years later. This one runs for about 41 minutes and is of an English Cream Golden Retriever. It has a lot more instruction and was taped over about 3 days of painting. We will be downloading it over night tonight! Happy New Year!
Selling is a big challenge! I started on Etsy, but there is too much competition there now. Keep working on developing your unique style and post it on Instagram. I have heard it helps. My next move is to get my work into one gallery and a home design shop. Show your work to everyone!
I am teaching 5 art classes per week with about 35 students...and I paint dog and people portraits. This is the only way to make ends meet! Until you get really famous :)
NettieKStudio I understand, it seem it is hard even in the USA to be an artist.... by the way in Italy it is very difficult to sell original paintings. The majority of my paintings are abroad, especially in UK or USA, so sad... Italy is losing the love for fine arts :-(
If I remember right, this painting took about 1 1/2 hours to complete, plus adjusting the background at the end. Painting loosely helps things to go much faster than picking at every detail! Thanks for asking Kenia!
Hi Deb, The music is actually written and produced by my son, Austin Martel Williams. He is now a successful, award winning professional photographer and videographer with his own company called, " Adventure Wedding Photography" in Idaho. After years of not doing any music, he announced at Christmas that he is picking it back up! I am so very happy. Thanks for asking!
I have never noticed that before! Thanks. Must have been a dropped frame on my film. Thanks for watching that far into the video! It is one of our earlier attempts from 2 years ago.
Oil paint will dry to the touch in a week or so, especially in summer. The surface layer dries first, then the paint begins to cure below to the canvas. Depending on the amount of paint, and the color, it can take 6 months before the paint is dry enough to safely put a varnish on without risking cracking.
Thanks Barbara, This was one of our first videos...the rest of them...over 70 videos...are all in "real time " with a flow of instructions nicely segueing through each painting. If you click on the bold "NettieKStudio" word beside my round face it will take you to my channel. At that point, find the word, "videos" and click on that. It will open you up to all 74 videos...and counting! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, This was one of our first videos and the only one with the music over the voice . I hope you enjoy watching the rest of them! There are over 80 more! Nettie kaye
Wow...something has suddenly gone wrong with the sound. Thanks for letting me know! If you hover over the bottom of the screen, the letters "cc" will show up. This will give you closed captioning until we can figure it out with the TH-cam guys.
The reason the nose appears to be off, is because the camera was shooting from an angle. When we are in front of a live audience the artist and camera cannot be directly in front of the canvas. This distorts the image. Make sure when you paint, you are standing nose to nose with your painting. Thanks so much for your comments
Thanks Lee :) This was the first art video we produced about 5 years ago...the only one we sped up with the music laid over. Hope you get time to check out the other 80+ videos we have produced since! Stay tuned! I'll be doing a Cocker Spaniel in my next dog video! Nettie Kaye
The nose is off because the instructor is doing too much talking and not paying attention to her painting. She is generalizing features. Too bad. Very generic dog. Dog lovers enjoy expression on their dog's faces.
This is the conundrum of teaching often. Speech comes from the opposite side of the brain. So...when my students are working, I always encourage silence...In order to talk and paint at the same time, you literally have to switch sides of the brain at rapid succession. It can be exhausting! However, when things go askew during a demonstration, it is primarily due to the necessity of standing off to the side in order for everyone to see what is happening.
Very cute.It is not an hiperrealistic work. This is a piece of art, with soul.
Thank you Fernando :)
