    Regarding the speed of submarines. First, NOBODY's going to tell you. Second, the assumption should be that they move as fast as they can while being a nightmare to detect. Defensive submarines for a battle-group can likely sustain the speed of the entire group, but as soon as that group enters its operational area, accompanying submarines will essentially become holes in the water while they listen for adversarial ships and submarines.

      Speed is the main reason why US Navy attack subs are nuclear as it lets them keep up with the carrier group.

    14:45 Probably thinking about the whole "Any sensor. Any decider. Any shooter." plan. Basically, just leveraging any sensor: someone with eyes on the ground, air, etc. Any decider: any one in command who can authorize a strike. And any shooter: anything with a weapon that can hit the target. So instead of a "kill chain" it's a "kill web." Apparently we were practicing this with the UK, Canda, Australia, France, Japan, and New Zealand not too long ago in the Mojave.

    Conventional submarines have maximum submerged speeds of 16 to 24 knots, and very low acoustic signatures. Their maximum speed is much lower than that of nuclear-propelled submarines. They also have very short endurance at maximum speed. Top seed of a nuclear powered submarine is secret but its believed to be in excess of 30 knots. They would have to have capability of at least 35 knots to be able to be part of a carrier strike group. A WW II subs top speed was 8 knots submerged but could only maintain that speed for 16 hours. If the reduced speed to 2 knots, they could remain submerged for 48 hours before surfacing to recharge its batteries.

    the thing is that you cant physically sink them they have so many sealed compartments that theyre basically styrofoam but made out of steel. like they spent 6 mo cutting holes in one from the 60s to sink it and that was before CAD. now buring down to the water line is a real concern, the big loss would be all those very specialized people. And subs can cruse at 35+ knots as far as the navys ever told, so take that for what it is.

    • @markpukey8
      @markpukey8 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I like the fact that the US Navy "admits" their ships and subs can do certain speeds. But they never, ever state "This is the max speed". It's good to have your opponents guessing.
      As a side observation, both Russia and China brag about their maximum capabilities and how much they overwhelm US capabilities. The US never, NEVER EVER, discloses our max capabilities. And in those cases where we really test our hardware (thinking of Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missiles in Ukraine here)... theirs sucks and ours outperforms what was said (Those shiny new Kinzhal's were shot down by 20 year old PATRIOT missile batteries and older generation ammo). I'll leave to the readers to decide which is a smarter strategy.

      @@longtallzach9 i knew someone who served on a carrier and he told me that the speed dial thing is actually not even labeled all the way so no one can guess what the real max speed it.
      And I'm sure it's only like 5-10 knots above what we already know, but in the real world that means the ship could be FIFTY MILES away from where you thought was the furthest it could move in just a couple of hours. It's a big ocean, there's lots of room to get lost in if you need to.

    • @nerocaesar9249
      @nerocaesar9249 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@markpukey8 As someone who was a helmsman aboard a super carrier, 30 knots is the "official" top speed. The bigger issue is I dont think anyone has been allowed to see just how fast they can actually go. Im not even sure if Im allowed to say how fast I have personally seen it get up to.
      Another part is since its nuclear, you can just set it on "cruise control" and go at roughly the same speed for decades, never stopping. it gets really hard to keep track of something that never has to stop.

    This video doesn't touch on one of the most important defensive aspects: the offense.
    The enemy has a "kill chain" that is required to attack a carrier that includes among other things the need for intelligence, communications, locating, targeting, and track to target guidance. Break anyone of those and it becomes nearly impossible to sink a carrier. Much of how the US military would go about doing that is classified but some of the tactics have appeared in open publications including speeches made by Admirals.
    After all, the best defense is to prevent the enemy from using its offense effectively.

    Interesting that they don't really talk about the survivability of carriers. They're so big, and have so many compartments, that even if you blow a hole in the side, they don't sink. They are really, really hard to sink!
    He mentions this video is from 2019, and 2024 is solidly in the age of Drones. But I don't imagine a drone swarm could be large enough to really sink one. Sea drones tend to have limited range so they can't get to the carrier 100 miles off shore. Not without someone noticing them in plenty of time to react. Even if 3 or 4 drones managed to hit and blow up on the carrier, it is unlikely they could do enough damage to sink it. Just make it sail home for repairs... the day after 3 other carriers show up to take its place.

    I’m finally somewhat early to one of your videos! I agree with the boomers that some commentary is just straight up annoying because it’s just rambling, but you offer such an interesting perspective with your commentary.
    Side note: think about how strong the US navy is with their carrier groups. Other nations have carriers that are powerful but there isn’t a single country that has proven that they can be a sustained force on the other side of the planet and conduct battle against a nation fighting on their home shores. They can sustain the navy and army/marines while being more powerful than other nations navies who don’t have to support anyone else.
    This is shown by just how powerful the US was in WW2 where they could invade three countries on opposite sides of the planet.

      Normally, yes. However they can and do resupply other ships as the missions parameters require. Sometimes you cant get a fuel shipment out to that one DDG, but the carrier has a few million gallons its not planning on using any time soon. I've done it personally aboard CVN-72 USS Abraham Lincoln.

    The defense funding is what separates the US from every other country, if you have the ability to spend billions on failed projects, what results is the best equipment and expanding technology is pushed faster then most countries with smaller military budgets. Allies of the US can purchase military equipment without any R&D costs. All we know is build costs of military equipment but the development costs would be interesting if not mind boggling.

    • @markpukey8
      @markpukey8 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And consider the strategic value of that massive spending. If the US suddenly said we had invented a teleportation device to deliver missiles on target... our enemies WOULD HAVE TO spend money trying to figure out a defense against teleported missiles! We have successfully demonstrated so many world changing technologies in the past, and we have so much money to spend, that no one can afford NOT TO try and counter whatever we say we have.
      That much spending is criminal. It's shocking. It distorts our entire economy. And at the same time, it's a major strategic weapon in our arsenal.

    I'm not sure the differences in communication between the iPhone and Samsung phone is a good comparison. With my Android phone I can print from a printer, tune into Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, to a speaker, other phones, my computer, my smart home device and the car. They're all made by different manufacturers yet there's a common technology in between which connects them, whether by WiFi or Bluetooth. I don't see why the iPhone would have such a major advantage in that regard.

    Your comment about the troubling countries being on your doorstep is another advantage the US has over other countries. Almost all military strat is based around defense of the homeland and incursions to nearby countries that might start something.
    The US is so far away that it has minimal worry about the homeland so our military strat is designed to go anywhere in the world and fight on 2 fronts at the same time. UK has is the 2nd best navy and has 2 carriers. US is at 11 now.

      True. Ukraine is performing fantastically against the stupid Russians. But they are all in a tiny pond compared to the open ocean. It changes the strategic challenge.
      And I'll add that it is REALLY REALLY unlikely that the US would ever allow a carrier into the Black Sea! Exactly because it's too small and it eliminates several of the carrier's advantages when on the open sea.

      @@markpukey8 the thing is, when the US does war games we intentionally have severe limitations placed on us. In the example given it would be things like "no using off ship/other ship sensors or assets, no using sensors specifically made to find submarines, and you are not allowed to engage unless you have visual confirmation on A SUBMARINE."
      the US trains under "worst case scenario" conditions so when those "worst cases" happen, we can confidently deal with it, and when its just "less than average" conditions its a walk in the park.
      its like saying "so and so 'shot down' an F-35 in a wargame" when the rules stated the F-35 cant engage further than visual distance. defeating the whole point that the F-35 is a long range weapons platform, not a dog-fighter like the F-22.
