  • Ken Jordan is a master craftsman. You have seen him in many of our videos. He's the guy smoking the pipe. He loves to stop by to offer advice and moral support. He is always welcome. I have learned a lot from Ken over the last 15 years. Some of it has even been about construction.

@@marcussamson7640 My 80 year old grandfather would do the same thing. Any time I was working on electric or building a room or porch he would sit in a chair and watch. He tried to help all he could.
He was hit in the back with a steel beam from a crane and he got real bad arthritis after it happened. He woke up at 3 o'clock every morning and worked with his tractor and around the farm.
He was a logger, construction worker and construction foreman building bridges. He also owned a grocery store and a couple properties with cell phone tower income.
He had cancer twice and his left eye was put out from a nail, when he hit it with the chainsaw. He built the house I live in, my sister's house, my aunt's and mom's house.
He also rebuilt his home in three months after it burned down, that was when my mom was a little kid. He said the house was liveable after two weeks it just wasn't finished. He got the building materials loaned to him from the lumber yard and paid the guy back in those three months.
Oh and he was an Army veteran, he was a medic and served near Elvis in germany.

I had a brain aneurysm rupture (SAH) 12 years ago when i was 28. I had been a roofer since I was a teenager and I had no insurance so I ended up just dragging myself back up the ladder and starting again. I wasnt going to lose my home but their were plenty of times i wondered what am I doing. There were a few times I thought i was going to lose consciousness so Id jam myself between stacks bundles so I couldnt just roll off. I have regained my faculties and having to relearn reading made me understand and appreciate communication so much more. For the 1st few years I carried a dictionary everywhere I knew the words but they were just unfamilar very odd feeling. Nice to know other people keep going too it is the best rehab and plus if you can just fall over and die at any moment there is no time for pity partys.

Being a roofer, it totally explains why you had no health insurance. The insurance industry made it too expensive. How? Because they don't follow basic principles of insurance which spreads the risks of roofing onto all other areas of construction risk. The modern insurance policy specializes in the "risk" therefore forcing those only in the Roofing industry have to foot the risks of that industry. Well, of course its too expensive, the insurance idiots have made the system specific vs. diverse as the principles suggest. So sad that the States and their insurance commissioners allow this kind of underwriting. Folks were better off before insurance commissioners were created.

The goal of rehabilitation, often misunderstood, is maximum utilization of remaining skills and not 100% of former capabilities. Let Ken’s experience with his stroke serve as a lesson to everyone:
If you ever have any signs or symptoms of a stroke call 911. Don’t wait, don’t go to bed, go to the ER. The ambulance will get you there quicker than you can get yourself and if there is a choice of hospital they will take you to the right one.
    Time is brain; don’t wait.

I just want to use this opportunity to remind people of the symptoms of a stroke (think FAST):
      Facial drooping
      Arm weakness
      Speech difficulties
      Time to call an ambulance
If you or a suspected stroke victim can't raise their arms above head height, can't smile, slur their speech or can smell burned toast, it's time to call the emergency services.

Yep. Almost the exact same scenario with my Dad around 60 years old. Felt weird, went to bed at 9PM, Woke up at 4AM unable to talk, walk, lost right side. 6 weeks later he's talking and walking with a walker. 2 months later his brain flipped and he spent the next 5 years in Searcy mental hospital and then nursing home. Don't take a minute for granted. Life can literally change in a heartbeat. And knowing the signs is life-saving. And Greg is right, the ambulance will get you to the right place.

As a so called professional Carpenter for 40 years I totally agree Ken is on another level. Few craftsmen in history ever attain this degree of skill. The house is kind of dark and imposing but showcases his joy and understanding of wood and superb quality of construction. Life isn't fair when a man of his talent and vision gets hit by a stroke and others that have no desire to do anything and achieve nothing retain good health. His come back accomplishments prove he still hasn't lost his drive and passion and not least his skills. Amazing man in an amazing house.

This man couldn't read anymore but decided to write his own book by using the skills of his brain and learning to use his hands as best as he can. I could watch video after video of the things he has created and the tools around his shop. Godspeed to the both of you. Be blessed and keep your Pencils sharp !!!

After 35 years of working in the airline industry I'm currently recovering from right shoulder surgery and will soon have surgery on my left shoulder. On top of that I may need lower back surgery if PT doesn't work. With the support of my wonderful wife I have no doubt it won't be long before I'm back working in my shop. This video serves as inspiration and proves how powerful the mind can be even if the body has limitations. Keep up the good work!

Silently I’ve applauded the passion and childhood delight you exude when speaking and sharing as you do in these videos. However, following this one, you’ve inspired my voice. Gone are the days when Men of your caliber were plentiful, but it has proven clear that the childhood delight shining through; is no more than mere Marvel of the “TRUE MASTERS” and the opportunity to tell their stories. Thank you for the love and admiration enough to share the one about the “Man in the Chair”!

Good Job!!! I am a 66 yr old carpenter in Alameda Ca. We have a lot of Craftsman and Victorian examples here. I have the honor of working on restoring and preserving many of the grandest over the years. I do my best everyday. I have worked with broken thumbs, elbow bones, toes, and a shoulder cracked in 4 places and did not miss a day. You brothers had tears running down my face watching this video. Thank you so much. With respect, love, striving for excellence, endurance, and brotherhood you have built a more beautiful world.

Listening to you and seeing the excitement on your face, as a stroke victim myself I am sure you would never give up either. I thank you for sharing Kens story. It hits close to home for me. I was in the hospital for 4 months After January 20 2021 and am still receiving therapy. My balance is still off. Still can't drive. I used to play my guitars but haven't been able to since that day. I forgot how. I was always active in restoring classic cars I can still do some of it. I love working metal and have enjoyed some wood work in the past. Working with your hands is so satisfying. Tell Ken I will be thinking about him for a good while to come and God Bless. Will be praying🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😁

I found your channel a couple of weeks ago by happenstance, have watched over 100 of the Spec House videos and have learned a lot which I hope will help me, help my brother build his house - thank you. I've never commented because most of the videos are old and well, I tend not to, but after watching this I just had to comment and say THANK YOU for sharing this story, it truly is inspiring both just as a person, but also as a fellow wood worker is has just started in and aspires to Kens sort of precision and tolerances. Ken's house is beautiful and I wish you'd shown more of the amazing wood and wood working and also more of all those beautiful hand tools.

What an accomplished man. Cheers to you Ken. You remind me of an uncle figure I had in my life. He was a fellow electrician friend of my fathers who took me under his wing on side jobs and taught me a whole lot. He retired in 2016 and continued to do the wood work on his dream home which is absolutely incredible like Ken’s house! Unforunately, he got leukemia and never got to finish his dream home - RIP Angelo, you were the fucking man!
