Scott, if you doubled the number of videos and had Cy in all of them, I don't think we'd still get enough of him. God bless him! Thanks so he and his family for taking part in your videos.
Before the big box stores forced the local hardware store into retirement, I would go with my grandfather and sit around the coffee pot with the other gentlemen of infinite wisdom, and learn things that don't get printed in books. Thank you for rekindling a very nice memory. Like Grandpa said, "You will learn more with your mouth closed, than you will while you're talking." For the price of,"throw a log in the woodstove kid" I got to listen and learn the things that seperated the men that really know things from the men that THINK they know things.
You could probably help Cy weld a hex shaft to the boat winch that a battery powered 1/2" drill/ driver hooks to and turns that for him. You could also make a detachable handle for the hex shaft that he can use if he happens to not have a battery charged for his drill and the power is out. Or maybe he's just content with how it is! That's fine too lol. If it ain't broke don't fix it right? Might save his shoulder though. That's a lot of cranking.
I think a gear reduction would be the way to go. Seems easy enough to turn now that you could increase (decrease?) the gear ratio so it would take less cranks at the expense of being a bit hard to crank.
I mean he made the awesome dumb waiter back in the day to save the labor of hiking the wood up the stairs so Im guessing, especially at their age, that Cy and Maxine wouldn't mind the convenience of a cordless drill operated dumb waiter. Especially if the modification was like you said easy and optional.
Cy is one lucky man, and I'm sure he knows it. Granted, he certainly worked for what he has, I wouldn't get that twisted. Rare to see someone work that hard get to sit back and enjoy it for as long as he has. Happy holidays, to all of you folks.
I've loved the spec house videos, but I have to say I've missed these one-off videos. But I have always enjoyed everything you have put out there. Thank you
Nothing quite like doing a good job like this for somebody you love and care about... just feels good to help them out a bit and repay some of their kindness
I miss my father-in-law very much. He was like Cy, and hardly ever had anything done for him. He pulled one of his own teeth once, because they couldn't afford to go to a dentist (depression years). He was a carpenter, and I learned a lot from him. Thanks for this video.
Love that guy. It’s strange how the effects of aging accelerates on the home stretch. Or maybe it’s because my perception of it is only based on prior videos of him. I hope he and his wife live many more years. But please do as much with Cy as you can, as soon as you can. Thanks for another good video.
@@michaeldalton8374, I was thinking that he’s lucky to have Maxine, but on further thought, they’re lucky to have each other and to have grown together with each other. Merry Christmas Cy and Maxine! And to all!
Our "world leaders" could do with taking a good few leaves out of your book, honesty, compassion, respect, humility, honest hard work and I'm sure many more aspects than I can list. Thank you for sharing your homes and lives with us, a way of life we can only hope to aspire to. God bless you all.
I stumbled on essential craftmen’s videos years ago in my mid 20’s. I’m from Flint Michigan, and good men are far in few when I was growing up. One person that’s always been consistent throughout my life, that I actually had to live with during high school Years was my grandpa. He retired from GM at 50 and everybody always came to him to weld stuff and fix things, he had a small woodworking station in his garage. Unfortunately, the way I grew up I always looked down on trade work and thought these type of things were just the old way to do things. In my mid twenties, I got my first framing job and have been watching these videos ever since. I gained such respect for trades men, and how wickedly smart and honorable some of these men are. Sometimes it gets a bad wrap cause of the drinking of low level carpenters and laborers and that’s fair but I can’t tell you how much this content has been so transformative and impactful for me. & every video, of both these men just rings nostalgia for the best man I’ve ever know, my grandpa. & I’m so thankful for you guys!
Scott, Nate, Thank You for sharing this story of/about Cy and thank you Cy and Maxine for sharing your home with us. Yourselves and Cy are very inspirational. If possible, additional stories such as this, and of things Cy has created over the years, would be helpful and beneficial to us all. Love it. Thank you!
I lived in northern WI for several years. One shack I spent a decade in had a woodstove and I went thru about 7 full cords a year, so I know how much work Cy and Max go thru each year to build that stack up. Much respect to this couple, true grit never found a more welcome home.
Cy is so interesting and I bet Maxine is an incredible woman. It’s great to hear how involved she in in all of the construction of this house. They are definitely a power couple
This video made smile and also sad at the same time. I had the good fortune to grow up in the NW around men like Cy. I smile at the memories of those men, am saddened by their passing, and the dying of our country along with them
Somehow we all end up loving Scott's people. :) Please put a mic on Scott & Nate when interviewing Cy or anybody else so we can hear what else is being said or asked. :)
I could listen to Mr Swan all day. He could be explaining how paint drys and it would be interesting. You truly have a great friend with so many talents. Have a merry Christmas!
Reminds me of home! I love people like Cy. I know intuitively there are thousands of him in our country, however finding them is like hunting unicorns. But when you find one, you quite literally, can get a doctorate on life in about 15 minutes. Pure wisdom
I feel like I’m standing there with them, listening to the collective knowledge and experiences like it’s coming from my own family. Thank you, Nate and Scott, the content you two put out is top notch.
Cy no doubt is one of the most unique men on this planet. His talents are endless and his experience over the years is invaluable. So appreciate his willingness to share. God bless you Cy Swan!
The world and essentially you and Nate, are so lucky to have a man like this around. He reminds me a lot of my Great Uncle who passed 10 or so years ago. The unmeasurable amount on useful knowledge and stories is nothing shy of incredible. Unfortunately, I was too young to quite understand the importance of that before he passed. He was the last of his kind in my family and I love every minute of your videos with Cy.❤
Wish I knew what I know now, 35 years ago, had a good wife and I messed it up. Man's gotta have a helpmate that has the same vision and work ethic. A man can't occimplish a 1/4 of what a matched married couple can. Cy and Scott both chose very wisely.
This reminds me of the wonderful years my family and I spent in NW Montana. Cut and burned10 to 12 cords of firewood a year and believe me that will keep you fit and healthy. We looked for tamarack (larch) and Douglas fir which are preferable to any of the other species in that area. Gotta admire Cy for his get up&go at his age. Im 72 now and it would be a real chore for me to work that hard today.
Boy, beautiful land. Like to be like Cy when I grow up. Got a few years to go. Bless him. There's that truck of yours with the crane. I just love that truck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So good to see more of such a legendary character = ) I burst out laughing at the image of Maxine abseiling on a horse hair rope around the curve of the step whilst Cy wound in the screws as they went ! Thank you all for such wonderful and wholesome entertainment = )
It's gonna be a real sad day whenever he finally takes a rest. I hope he passes on every interesting story and every bit of hard-won knowledge that he wants to before that day. That man is seriously a national treasure and the kind of human that just aren't made anymore. God bless him.
Cy and his wife are impressive people and can teach us all about hard work and perseverance. Nice job Nate. You are lucky to have such naturals for your on-camera "talent". :-)

I used to sell firewood and haul it into the area where I sold it, I would stack it in by pickup cross the bed up to the height of the bed, and I would put 80 pieces in each row and 3 rolls would make what is called in our part of Tennessee a rick of would, 4'x8' which is 1/3 of a cord so when you mentioned 80 pieces I knew she and I had something in common, got to pass the time of stacking thinking about something. Nice work. I am 78 and still cut wood and heat our home by burning about 3 cords of wood every year in the basement and comes up the stairs and heats the whole house. For me, nothing beat the heat coming from a well dried piece of wood and it works for us and feels better than electric heat, but our central heat is rarely used, I guess that is why our central air and heat unit have both lasted 25 years a piece.

I love the dumbwaiter for the firewood. I think the thing that puts people off to heating with wood is hauling it in the house everyday, along with the mess. I built a wood box in the corner of my living room with a door through the wall at the bottom sill. the door is chest height when standing outside and the box holds almost a week's worth of wood for me.
