I destroyed my right shoulder two years ago and had it rebuilt last year...then at 44 picked up a compound bow for the first time. Every month I am adjusting and changing something...even just going up in weight. Little tips like this are an awesome thing to keep an eye on no matter how old or how much experience you have. Gotta take care of your body or you fall apart
You have, by far, the most helpful videos on TH-cam I've found! As an 36 yr old beginner, you've helped me so much and I'm extremely grateful for you sharing your immense knowledge.
Always the honest truth that really helps any shooter. Been bowhunting for more years than I care to say, and with the imformation guys like yourself, Levi Morgan give out ,it even helps me,as a veteran of this sport, and someone who loves this sport. Thanks and keep the great imfo coming. Great to know this sport is in great hands..
Hey Chris, I'm 48 years old, I've been bow hunting since I was 15. I've been shooting a trigger style release my whole life. About two and a half years ago, I noticed my groups continually got bigger and bigger. I primarily attested that it was my age, eye-sight, and just lack of practice. I begin to accept as it just being okay, slowly showed itself as a mild case of target panic. And the more I thought about it, the worse I got. This past season I decided to switch and try a thumb release. I opted for the True-ball fang. It has definitely been a game changer. But I still am not 100% confident. A good video on converting from a trigger to a thumb or hinge style, and what to do with your bow set up, and changing the way you shoot?
Hey Chad, check out John Dudleys channel, nock on archery. He's got some super, to the point with minimal rambling, videos about the release questions, and he covers them all well. I personally had some issues switching TO a thumb release from a wrist strap. At the end of the day, if you can break down your shot cycle into segments, and make sure you are repeating them as consistently as you can, you should tighten your groups up no problem. It's all fundamental, keep it simple. And film yourself in your shot cycle and pay attention to any variances you notice, and try and tighten them up. I hope this helps!
I use a thumbbutton and everything my pin is in the x ring I pull with my back muscle. As soon as it leaves the x ring I’ll stop adding pressure. Good luck with your archery!
@@bullseyejim5764 stopping your shot process is one of the worst things that you can do. all you have to do is slowly pull through your shot no matter where you are aiming. if you stop putting pressure because you think you are going to miss the middle, then that can lead to target panic, and that is NO fun.
I have shot for years and thinking back, I had many bows where my draw length was close enough. This year I have been tinkering with my VXR 31.5 because I just couldn’t shoot it as well as my Vertix. I bought the next shorter mods, twisted strings/cables to spec, and added a high wrist grip and “Walla.” I find my anchor immediately and my groups have tightened.
I just got into bowhunting and am so grateful for the amount of solid information out there. I’m hoping with good practice and consistency I’ll be able to naturally obtain good form and habits. Although I wished I got into bowhunting and archery two decades ago lol.
Great video, thanks finally found the answer to my draw length, bow shop told me my draw length was to long and they said that's why my bow hand was bent some much but I increased my draw from 26.5 to a 27.5 and I'm completely amazed and relieved, and not feeling like I'm bunch up or costly holding bow back
I still like going back and watching these old Chris Bee vids because you forget this stuff if you're not using your bow year-round. Even gaining or losing weight can affect your draw length and throw everything off.
Outstanding. Pro shop yesterday working with me to get at 29". Been shooting 30 years and shortened to 28" but he believes I'm 29. Was testing the new v3. Thx
I just got the Title 38 and this video was really timely. I have to get a different mod because my draw length on the Elite RevolXL was fine, but about a half inch short on the Title. Thanks for the confirmation!
Good stuff. When you hit your bow shop dont go right before season, they'll get you in and out that door and be of very little help. This time of year is a great time to get heir full attention and good help
I didn't watch this video until today but legit a day after you posted this I figured out at practice that I was lifting my left shoulder up for the longest time, and as soon as I fixed it, my shots held steadier.
As you have said before. If it’s just off by a 1/4” you can always adjust the D-Loop or even put some twists in the strings. This can help fine tune your bow. Of course I learned a lot of these tricks by watching these type of videos. Lol. It’s crazy to think how much you can learn by watching these videos. I’m 42 so when I was young we didn’t have this so it’s awesome to be able to find whatever you want on line nowadays. Just make sure it’s the right type of advice because there is a lot of wrong stuff circulating online these days.
I'm 69 and just beginning to appreciate and enjoy my cheap 350.00 compound bow. I'm hitting target from 35mts but not yet grouping. I've been noticing my peep is too big and realised recently my left arm is bent too much as you explained here. I also have too much arrow at front of bow at full draw. Ok adjustments needed. I'm 2.21 into your vid...listening. Subbd and liked.
Even if it is nothing new, it is good stuff. Keep it coming. Sometimes you can watch a bunch of videos on a topic and the information sounds repetitive and you think you already know it until somebody presents it in a way that just clicks and you realize you didn't really know it before because now that you do know it, you can see how bad what you were doing before was. I just had that happen twice with two Paige Pierce videos. One on setting up stabilizers and one on proper back tension. Both of them made me say "hmm I think I understand what you are putting down and now I feel the need to try a few things." Guess what, they worked. I can tell when I am shooting with my finger tripping the release and when I am shooting properly. Right about now I feel like I want to try a half inch up and down in draw length to see if I am shooting the correct draw.
this has got me thinking. i might do the first thing you showed for short draw length. will have to have the shop take a look and maybe play round a bit.
Chris has his own little Mathews HQ. Thanks Chris for the video I’m 13 and shoot at 28 inch draw which seems a little long for my age but it fits me, I’ll start paying attention to my form.
great video, that might actually be the case with my bow, will take a look at it next time, I should even still have some modules for longer and shorter around
Chris could u please make a video on how to fine tune the DL? Ur explanations are always the best, and there arent really any vids on this out there for mathews bows.
Great video Chris, I just started using a thumb release and I think I need to shorten my draw length. Hopefully string twist will be the ticket. Your shop looks great! You could probably pick up some work as a Carpenter.
Posture alignment has been a core of my coaching philosophy in recurve. I noticed the different techniques adopted in compound and always confused me, but didn't pursue learning more as it took away from my understanding. I've recently found more coaching like this and via John Dudley, that gives me confidence in coaching compound now. The main reason I'm looking is to migrate to compound due to age and stamina in holding. I've been trying to understand what difference there would be in my drawlength if any, as I have a 31 1/8 " recurve arrow length and don't want to purchase the wrong bow for me
Good vid Chris. Can you talk about 3spot/Vegas strategies? As a benchmark, I'm currently shooting consistently in the mid-290's with my V3 31 hunting setup (Fast Eddie 2 pin, 8" Flatline Stab)+ hunting arrows. Trying to figure out that 300 and how much is bow, how much is sight, how much is stabilizer, how much is arrow diameter.
I ordered a new camera & 1 of the topics I want to cover 1st is the correlation between the right draw length & the right anchor point. The video will focus on great shooting form & repeatability shot after shot. I have 2 bows that with Covid it took 15 months to get to the point of the draw cycle & anchor point being identical. Both bows are made by the same manufacturer. The 2 differences are that the new 1 has a draw length that u can change w/o a press. The older bow has a dedicated draw length & for over a year I haven't been able to swap the right cams out for it. I made things work to the point that I can shoot both bows equally well even though the newer bow has some added value in performance. A video which would be short would break it down much better than words. I will dm it to u when I finish it. This could give many people with this issue ideas 💡& help even more that face the dilemmas that weren't around b4 Covid. Yes, I just hit the big red button & liked your post.
Good video, not entirely for beginners. Did I notice correctly you don't use a thumb peg on your hinge release? Have you ever talked about different releases, and maybe why you didn't put a thumb peg in your Ultraview hinge?
My draw length was measured by having my arms outstretched and then dividing that by 2.5 which puts me at 28.8, so mine is set at 29 on my old PSE from 06. I use a kisser button and lock my index finger right behind my jaw and under my ear. Thanks for sharing this on what to look for pertaining to the subject
I want to here your advice on how to know if your back elbow is in the correct position, how do you pull thru your shot to make it a surprise and how to have the correct head position, I have to move my head for my eye to see the full peep surrounding my sight.
I am 5'8" and shoot 29" with a short D loop. Measuring always pegs me at 28.5". I have been called out many times for claiming a 29" draw. I have been this way since I was 15 and am 41 now. I broke my collar bone at 13. When it healed it pushed my left shoulder down and more than an inch further out than my right shoulder. If I try to shoot anything less than 29" I get severe pain in my left shoulder.
Bought a v3 31 in February. Back would be sore as hell for days after. Thought maybe just me not be use to it. Was always having to trouble anchoring to the kisser and string to the nose. After other videos and this one. Come to find out the draw is about a half inch to long. Anchored back to the kisser and the string came back about half inch past the top of the nose
As a traditional shooter (because not many people in Germany shoot Compound (Bowhunting is illegal, so we have no community)) i know how important a constant and right draw length is. Its the most important thing to be consistent and accurate. Except the right arrow maybe, which is more important in Recurve. But my problem is.....i have a very long draw length. Im 1.95 meter tall and set it at recurve with 31.5 inch, maybe 32 inch. Most beginner Bows in compound cant handle this, and i dont spend 1k to test. We also dont have the wide range of compound to buy here. The cheapest one ist the Bowtech specialist for Target archery. He comes around 850 Euro (930 Dollars roundabout) which is to expensive for a beginner. The cheapest hunting bow is the Bear Species LD....and i said it....noone shoots hunting bows here, because hunting is only allowed with Rifles or Shotguns, and most people cant afford this hobby, so hunting is mostly for dentists, lawyers or other rich people (we dont have much hunting ground, and the exam and school for the license comes about 15k euro plus yearly costs of about 10k. Weapons and storage, weapons license not inlcuded, comes also 20k Euro and yearly costs of 10k. Yeah....our weapon laws are very strict here, its even not allowed to have one handed opener knives ^^) I own a cheap bear cruzer with 30 inch draw lengt and i dont have the feeling of backtension which i have with my recurves. The aiming pattern is calm, no hopping or surfing, but i cant see the whole of the sight, especially the level at the bottom trough my peep. I tried it with a wrist and a thumb release but i think its too short. We dont have pro shops here which are specialists for compound. Only Recurve, Recurve, Recurve and Traditional. Most dealers have about 1 or 2 cheap china compounds and try to sell you a expensive Bodnik Bow instead, because "Compound needs no skill" ^^ My Question is: "How i get a greencard, im done with german archery :D. Im useful. I swear. Im a male nurse :D" Joke. But i have one real question: When i see american compound ecurve shooters, i only see white people. Never a black or latino. Sometimes Asian. Is bowhunting and compound shooting a hobby for white people? I dont want to play the political correctness acial\snowflake\cancel culture card or discussion here, im really interested in this. In germany you also have 99% white people who shoot.
Hey Chris, I've been watching all your videos. I've been shooting a bow for over 20 years. The old man who taught me how to shoot was unconventional in his teaching methods. for about 2 years, we shot virtually every day countless arrows. I actually got pretty good, and then my family ended up moving away. I continued to practice for a few years and then stopped until my kids were old enough. I taught them the basics, but they never took to archery like I did. now they are grown living their lives. I decided about a year ago to try competition archery. I actually have my 1st 3d event tomorrow. I was wondering if you could make some videos to help someone like me thats never competed before a guide to being successful. possibly working up to competing with archers like yourself at some point. some ASA step by step along with indoor/outdoor USA/NAA archery. just about any guid someone can follow would be great. thanks
You wouldn’t happen to have a spare bow kicking around 👍 Excellent video- would be cool to see how you keep your peep from flipping and what type of “all around”peep to look for
I’d love for you to critique my shooting form honestly… I struggle with target panic/flinching , I have a hard time keeping the pin in the bullseye , and when I get it there , I almost always slap the trigger, I went from the traditional release to a thumb button , and it helped some, but not Enough. Every now and then when I’m aiming my string will also take off for no reason, putting a lot of unexpected strain on my shoulder, I can shoot good when I’m under pressure or with other people , but on my own, for some reason, I struggle with these issues
I noticed my draw length seems to be a little shorter after installing the Beereal grip on my mathews V3 27 but I'm still shooting ok groups. Would you suggest leaving it the way it is or having the draw length extended? Love the grip by the way.
You should do video like this using the Mantis X8 and show in real time, how draw length being short or long affects pin float in real time. You could also use it to represent stabilizer changes in real time. Most videos that use the Mantis are just a quick over view.
"OR" if you're in between on DL "BECAUSE",....you have a bow that only adjust (the Draw Length) by having to buy new modules....Mathews. That's why I own an PSE.
I don't see archers drawing or loading their bow with the arrow in a down position. I do, i point it under the target when drawing back. I'm concerned there could be a failure of D loop or the release and if arrow is pointed high it could accidentally be released. Is loading bow low a bad habit ?
I know a few guys with longer draws (32"-34") that shot forever with bent front arms because they couldnt find bows that could draw long enough. One got a hoyt xxl and the other a mathews atlas. First thing they said was how weird it felt going to full draw lol.
Interesting and good video on this topic. I am not totally sure, but I think the drawlength of my bow is a tad too long. Perhaps not much, maybe just a tad. Shooting with resistance activated release it is (also) important, that you have a little to give, so you can properly push and pull the shot off, without too much effort. :-)
I've become pretty uncomfortable shooting my bow recently as far as it feeling unnatural at full draw. I've noticed I don't hold as steady with my bow arm and my head has to lean in pretty drastically to see into my peep sight. Would this be an indication of too long of draw length or string stretching? This is a new bow as of last year, Mathews VXR 28.
Sometimes i have a little shiver a little moment before i release the shot. if this happens i miss the taget far then. do u have a tip for that problem?
Another thing I’ve noticed a lot of people do is they wanna see the arrow hit the target so they don’t have good follow through keeping the bow arm straight and dropping the bow too quickly causing low shots or left shots. Maybe talk about good follow through
Depending on how bent it is, it may be something you became comfortable with due to shooting a draw length that was too short. Nothing wrong with it just something to consider.
This exact thing happened to me. I got a bow at 16 and kept shooting it at a 30.5” draw. Roughly 8 years later I found out I’m actually a 32-32.5” draw. I’m now getting an atlas to fix this.
I’ve been looking for a video like this for a long time that actually gives me an answer as to why my left shoulder creeps up. I’m 6’3” with a very long draw. I got my triax(28 ATA) when I was younger with 29.5 inch draw so I know I need to extend it and get the extra mod. I wasn’t sure why my shoulder was doing that but now I know. Thank you Chris!! It probably doesn’t help that my neck is long too so I have to tilt it a lot with the steep draw angle. I think I should get a 31VXR or 31 v3. What do you think?
I destroyed my right shoulder two years ago and had it rebuilt last year...then at 44 picked up a compound bow for the first time. It'll look a lit like a workout video. Shoulder stability and strength is huge.
Try getting a longer stabilizer
just pull through the wobble, your hold will get better according to how often you practice.
STOP FOCUSING ON PIN FLOAT!! Focus on your shot process and with more experience and time shooting your pin float will get smaller over time

I tried it with a wrist and a thumb release but i think its too short. We dont have pro shops here which are specialists for compound. Only Recurve, Recurve, Recurve and Traditional. Most dealers have about 1 or 2 cheap china compounds and try to sell you a expensive Bodnik Bow instead, because "Compound needs no skill"
^^ My Question is: "How i get a greencard, im done with german archery :D. Im useful. I swear. Im a male nurse :D"
Joke. But i have one real question: When i see american compound
ecurve shooters, i only see white people. Never a black or latino. Sometimes Asian. Is bowhunting and compound shooting a hobby for white people? I dont want to play the political correctness
acial\snowflake\cancel culture card or discussion here, im really interested in this. In germany you also have 99% white people who shoot.
Caused major problems for me had one shoulder pop out of socket drawing on a deer late season same thing next year with the opposite shoulder
Love the content man keep them coming, your are the new face of archery! Keep on rocking man
Hey Chris, I've been watching all your videos. I was wondering if you could make some videos to help someone like me thats never competed before a guide to being successful. possibly working up to competing with archers like yourself at some point. some ASA step by step along with indoor/outdoor USA/NAA archery. just about any guid someone can follow would be great. thanks
You wouldn’t happen to have a spare bow kicking around 👍
Excellent video- would be cool to see how you keep your peep from flipping and what type of “all around”peep to look for
I’d love for you to critique my shooting form honestly… I struggle with target panic/flinching , I have a hard time keeping the pin in the bullseye , and when I get it there , I almost always slap the trigger, I went from the traditional release to a thumb button , and it helped some, but not Enough. Every now and then when I’m aiming my string will also take off for no reason, putting a lot of unexpected strain on my shoulder, I can shoot good when I’m under pressure or with other people , but on my own, for some reason, I struggle with these issues
I have a mission riot by Mathew’s, and j wasn’t sure how to do my draw length so thank you for making this video
can you do a video on setting up sight tapes?
Thank you so much for this. I'm playing with this right now.
I noticed my draw length seems to be a little shorter after installing the Beereal grip on my mathews V3 27 but I'm still shooting ok groups. Would you suggest leaving it the way it is or having the draw length extended? Love the grip by the way.
Thanks for the tips Chris!
I link this video to my group.. thanks for all man🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Easy DL adjustments on my new Elite Enkore. Couldn’t be happier!
Thumb release and hinge releases the proper way to shoot them would be an awesome video.
Those transitions were smooth. Nice editing
I know a few guys with longer draws (32"-34") that shot forever with bent front arms because they couldnt find bows that could draw long enough. One got a hoyt xxl and the other a mathews atlas. First thing they said was how weird it felt going to full draw lol.
Another CHRIS BEE video?!.YES!
I loosened four screws and turned two module plates on the cams to lengthen my draw length. Took 5 minutes.
What about going from a 30-35" ATA, does the angle of the sting, affect your draw length change?
I've become pretty uncomfortable shooting my bow recently as far as it feeling unnatural at full draw. I've noticed I don't hold as steady with my bow arm and my head has to lean in pretty drastically to see into my peep sight. Would this be an indication of too long of draw length or string stretching? This is a new bow as of last year, Mathews VXR 28.
Great info Chris. Thanks
Sometimes i have a little shiver a little moment before i release the shot. if this happens i miss the taget far then. do u have a tip for that problem?
How common is it for your target bow and hunting rigs to have different draw lengths (0.5")?
Another thing I’ve noticed a lot of people do is they wanna see the arrow hit the target so they don’t have good follow through keeping the bow arm straight and dropping the bow too quickly causing low shots or left shots. Maybe talk about good follow through
Did you sell your old bow or keep all of them? In this case, how many bow you have?
so if i buy a beereal grip for my new v3 im for sure going to be shooting tighter groups right
had a 30inch draw at 16... unfortunately, my bow happens to max at 30, I don't let that stop me from trying to be the best i can be.
Hey chris who won your September bow ?
Wow very interesting and well explained examples.
Do you think a 12/9 bow stabilizer set up or a 9/7 for deer hunting? Anyone can replay I am stuck and don’t know what to get
Cool mate. Love ya tips. That's why you're the pro!
Great information. Great presentation!
No Mathews or Hoyt bows no mods to wait on. Still lovin the vids though. Great tips
I would like to know transitioning from index and finger affects your draw length.
Chrisbee! Good info; Keeping it real!
Dang. Decided to shoot while watching and Yupp well said. Mines too short
You actually helped me a lot thank you
Also if you change from a wrist to a thumb release it will 100% change your drawl length
Anchor point
Love the new video keep them coming
I have a front bent arm however it's not from my draw length it's just how I hold my bow
Depending on how bent it is, it may be something you became comfortable with due to shooting a draw length that was too short. Nothing wrong with it just something to consider.
As long as the bent is consistent it’s not a problem at all!
There is no right or wrong way to shoot a bow. Whatever works best for you.
You look really tired mate chill and have a good rest 😴
Can you do a video on how you site in your landslyde site please..
What happened to cooper, we haven’t seen him in a while? Great vid
Both are awesome! Sounds like you are a big guy though so don't discount the Atlas.
@@jackbuendgen389 yeah I’m tall and lengthy lol. 6’3” 150 lol. So I’m long everywhere
@@danielmazza3011 that's what she said???
@@jackbuendgen389 lmao exactly
Great content Chris!! Keep it coming 👍
