Decriminalize & Deschedule: Advocates Welcome Biden Pardons But Demand More Reform of Cannabis Laws

  • President Joe Biden announced Thursday that he is pardoning everyone convicted of simple marijuana possession under federal law, and said the classification of the drug would undergo review. The move will remove many legal barriers for thousands of people to gain jobs, housing, college admission and federal benefits, and fulfills a campaign pledge made by Biden. However, the pardons will only affect about 6,500 people, as the vast majority of drug charges are at the state level and are disproportionately affecting communities of color. "We are demanding that the president actually deschedule and decriminalize cannabis," says Kassandra Frederique, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance.

He isn't releasing anyone from prison. That's the bottom line. This is a minor gesture. Decriminalization by rescheduling cannabis doesn't make it legal. Everyone in prison or jail solely for possession are arrested & prosecuted under state jurisdiction; not federal.

Federal decriminalization is key. People who suffer from seizures, autism, Ptsd & others can finally get a medication that works with less side affects. While still getting government aide. CBDs have a very low thc level that it isn't enough to control eliment. Some people require more thc to control seizures for ex. My friends daughter died from a seizure while trying to get her medical marijuana because the CBDs weren't enough.

Literally the only thing this administration has done so far that I’ve agreed with. I don’t smoke (only because it makes me nauseous which is a source of amusement for everyone I know that does 🙄) but this is actually a step in the right direction IMO.
I still believe that it should be legal for an adult human being to put whatever substance they want into their own body as long as they are informed of all risks to their health.
The legality of driving or working under said substance is another issue entirely.
But if we’re allowed to drink then we should be able to use ANY mind or body altering substance when it’s on our own time, in our own home, and without imposing it on or endangering others.
The fact that people are legally allowed to become addicted to alcohol and ruin their careers, their sense of self, their relationships, possibly their life - but apparently can’t achieve the same ends with a different drug? That’s disgusting to me.
You hurt or kill somebody - jail. You steal from someone or rob a business - jail. You destroy property - jail. Selling to children - jail.
Putting people in jail for buying or possessing something that they’re addicted to - because there’s things out there that the human brain clearly really, really likes - simply WILL NOT and will not EVER make the problem of drugs and addiction go away.
Sorry for the rant if anyone actually read all that but I’ve just seen too many people be ruined by something that could be handled in a different way.

Indeed. Alcohol, tobacco products, caffeine & sugar are more dangerous to our health & extremely addictive. Why aren't they illegal?
Cannabis was made illegal by exploiting racism & xenophobia. Otherwise it would still be legal today as it were then. Big business knows cannabis would interfere with their profits & control. If legal, it would reduce crime. Also relieve insomnia, loss of appetite, pain, spasms, depression, anxiety, ADD & ADHD. Maybe even reduce the risk of cancer. All of which would cost them big bucks.
Sativa (not Indica or hybrids) doesn't inhibit motor skills or cause drowsiness. It may make you giggle, cause dry eyes or dry mouth. Legalize cannabis federally within each and every state. The law of the land. This way, irrational prohibitionist politicians can't obstruct and prevent legalization against the will of the vast majority of Americans whom support the full federal cannabis legalization nationwide. Treat cannabis exactly like we treat far more dangerous and deadly yet perfectly legal alcohol. Legal in all states.

Nope, still not getting it. USA and countries in the Commonwealth are now part of the triple int'l UN treaties themselves initiated by the 2nd Geneva Opium Convention of February 19th, 1925 - which is where/when "Indian Hemp"/"Cannabis sativa L." got added to the League of Nations BAN somehow (...), not actually signed by USA imediately because of internal autonomist tensions, the Americans feeling worried that doing so would have implied loosing political power to an external NON-DEMOCRATIC/non-elected entity existing OUTSIDE the People's House... That, i'm afraid, is the root of all evils simply considering our respective politicians already agreed to design accomodating laws enforcing such piece of non-accountable bigotry, meanwhile dispatching "science", like to pretend that cannabis helps sexual pedophile predators to enslave vulnerable citizens (i swear i heard that told by local police on TV)...
