A piece for solo marching snare drum written by Jesse Sieff over the second movement (Allegro Molto) of the Symphony in C Minor, String Quartet No, 8, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Written with Shostakovich's characteristically darker and dissonant style (and career history) in mind, I found it fitting to perform this piece for my audition with the USMC Drum & Bugle Corps. For me, the biggest challenge of this piece was not playing the notes, or adjusting rhythmic time to a chamber symphony with the most unforgiving instrument in the world - it was simply having the audacity to write over a legendary composer's masterpiece. The caliber of Dimitri Shostakovich's musical genius is something I profoundly respect, and my hopes are to share the influence of his music with others by expressing it as genuinely as possible though my instrument.

i think the best part of this arrangement is how well it leans into what i call the "industrial terror" of Shostakovich's music. the snare makes it sound even more like a grinding, unstoppable machine, especially in sections like 1:27 where it sounds like an engine starting up. terrifyingly good

    • @seanhill4027

So true! Industrial terror is such a great description of that. Just came back after a few years and thought this was great.

The level of musicality, expression of dynamics, style and finesse was absolutely stunning. This is true talent and understanding of time and note placement. It's so hard to make music from orchestra translate well with a marching snare. But this guy aced it. I respect this. And I have to mention how much I love this snare. Dynasty has apparently come a LONG way from the garbage snares they made 20-30 years ago.

Fave part is from 02:37. Going from double stroke rolls and then doing those spaced accents like a horse jumping over a fence. Then into double stroke rolls then seamlessly into those super controlled single strokes. So fluid. Incredible technique. I'm not a marching guy by any means but totally appreciate this. Well done man.

Thank you for doing IUP proud. Great stuff. Congratulations on your accomplishments and USMC D&B Corps journey. One of my former staff members, Garrett Churchey, recently joined the bassline there. You have a strong career ahead of you.

Thanks so much, it's great to hear from an alum. The experience at IUP made all the difference and I'm glad there will be more of us playing for the USMC! Can't wait to get started and of course keep writing more music... Thanks again for the support!

+Jesse Sieff it's very easy to tell who can naturally write music--especially music that doesn't get in its own way and only "says" what it needs to. Despite fusing two genres here, it's very tastefully crafted. I hope you might be planning a series of these? As a teacher, this would be a great way to tie in classical music to modern approaches.

This is the best drum video since Tim Jackson's 2006 DCI performance.

Excellent work. Fun to listen too. Great production work. I’ve played snare for over 2 decades now and happy to find a different take on a performance. If you had 3 snares all at different tensions and tunings for different passages in music would be really something too. Again man, great work!

If you put a thumbs down on this you have no respect. I'd like to know how many years this gentleman has been playing.
Even if you hate music and live in a cave you would find this to be amazing. Utterly flawless and fantastic.

Jesse, awesome work! Just saw this video on TH-cam, and I was so happy to see an awesome solo like this one you put together! I love stuff like this with the incorporation of marching percussion into orchestral pieces. Amazing chops and great work! I sent you a message on your site for the sheet music! I'm psyched!
