i think the best part of this arrangement is how well it leans into what i call the "industrial terror" of Shostakovich's music. the snare makes it sound even more like a grinding, unstoppable machine, especially in sections like 1:27 where it sounds like an engine starting up. terrifyingly good
Jesse - I have been playing drums over 40 years and I just wanted to chime in with everyone else and praise you for not only the chops, but more important the musicality. Best of luck in your career!
wow, to get noticed by john wooton must be a big honour. his old videos we’re extremely influential to me when i younger. excellent playing and arrangement!
I can totally picture a Vanguard show to this music...8 well tuned snares...clean as can be. So sick. That last transition edit was amazing btw, so artistic and elegant man
I don’t think there will ever be a snare solo with a backing track as good as this one, five years and still the best of its kind, absolutely fantastic.
PLEASE keep writing more stuff like this. Your music is absolutely genius and it gives me the chills when I hear all the modulation a you put into it. Dam I need to keep practicing but please ! Make more (:
Whoaaa! I’m pretty sure I’ve seen you on instagram and now happened to find you here on yt too. You’re incredibly talented and I can see the countless hours of practice put in. This is absolutely incredible.
If you put a thumbs down on this you have no respect. I'd like to know how many years this gentleman has been playing. Even if you hate music and live in a cave you would find this to be amazing. Utterly flawless and fantastic.
The level of musicality, expression of dynamics, style and finesse was absolutely stunning. This is true talent and understanding of time and note placement. It's so hard to make music from orchestra translate well with a marching snare. But this guy aced it. I respect this. And I have to mention how much I love this snare. Dynasty has apparently come a LONG way from the garbage snares they made 20-30 years ago.
Hours and Hours of hard work and dedication went into your drumming. When I watch this video of you playing and hear what is going on only one things comes to my mind????? Perfection. God Given talent and respect for any one who realizes what an instrument can sound like when you have a master musician playing behind that instrument. I salute you sir for your Precise Pristine playing of a snare drum. most of all I can see a bright over whelming career for you. thank you for showing us this wonderful playing., much appreciation
This composition combined the best of many of my worlds. As a drummer, a violinist/cellist, a composer, and a teenger with many ideas and ambitions, this is a piece I can truly appreciate for both its execution and its contribution to what you accurately depicted as "a legendary composer's masterpiece." This video has become my example to what I want to do with my music. You have my applause and my gratitude.
+Timothy Lee (TimKyuLee) I'm so thrilled to hear that...nothing makes me happier than knowing I've made an impact on people through music. Thank so much for the kind words!
Just got the sheet in the mail. Im hoping to play it for Solo And Ensemble at my highschool this year. This piece inspired me to pick up marching snare drum and i have much respect for you Jesse Sieff

Fave part is from 02:37. Going from double stroke rolls and then doing those spaced accents like a horse jumping over a fence. Then into double stroke rolls then seamlessly into those super controlled single strokes. So fluid. Incredible technique. I'm not a marching guy by any means but totally appreciate this. Well done man.
I intended to watch just a few seconds of this, out of sheer curiosity - I wrote this comment after the 5th time watching it in a row 😂 - Impressive sir!!
I couldn't help but think about Cavaliers 2014 show while watching this, and I must say a lot of the licks in this video are phenomenal. You certainly know your way about the instrument, and you're so relaxed as well. Personally, I wish you had helped written the book for Cavs 2014 because it adds a lot more to the song the way you approached it. Great job sir!
+Jesse Sieff You absolutely should! Your writing is very creative and interesting. You definitely add another level to the melodic element to the music, which is what percussion should do really for any piece in my opinion. Also, upon watching the video again, I must commend you on your control of the rudiments, phenomenal.
Wow, fantastic job! I've never heard this string quartet before, so that was an added bonus. I'm thrilled to see solo drumming in a musical wrapper, so I hope you'll make more like this!
Thank you for doing IUP proud. Great stuff. Congratulations on your accomplishments and USMC D&B Corps journey. One of my former staff members, Garrett Churchey, recently joined the bassline there. You have a strong career ahead of you. --2009 IUP alum

+Jesse Sieff it's very easy to tell who can naturally write music--especially music that doesn't get in its own way and only "says" what it needs to. Despite fusing two genres here, it's very tastefully crafted. I hope you might be planning a series of these? As a teacher, this would be a great way to tie in classical music to modern approaches.
My percussion teacher played this at our showcase concert and everyone in the audience loved it but their ears were probably almost bleeding it was so loud it gave me chills.
Some guy just won Day of Percussion in my state with this solo. I knew of the piece beforehand, and when I heard Shostakovich's symphony come on through the sound system, I became insanely excited.
I’m trying it @ 90 right now, just so I can learn the beats, and bring it up later. It’s pretty easy @ 90, but it gets exponentially harder once you get up to 114
Definitely some amazing work man. Seriously amazing. I’ve been playing drums (kit) for years and have never seen so much creativity and just amazing playing. Keep it up man. Your going to go far!
Hey Jesse this is Matt from the bones 2022 pit and I happened to find this video the day season ended. First of all this is fantastic and second of all, I had a fantastic season man and I hope to see you next year!

This reenkindled my passion for the instrument that has been sleeping for so long. Great musicality and technique. Visuals are amazing too. I’m actually practicing it now. It’s so damn hard! I finished the first half in a slow tempo. Thank you very much for the inspiration.

To all those who were interested, the sheet music has been published and posted on Tapspace! www.tapspace.com/snare-solos/chopstakovich/
Pfft, yeah, ill get right on it. -_-
you suggest to use clear bottom head or kevlar bottom head for this piece?
18$ for a single sheet? How about no
its like 3 or 4 pages, lmao

You've got to record it if it happens! That would've been awesome! :D
Dude, the mix of chops with well-done orchestration to this piece is incredible. Great job, it was a treat to listen to and watch.

So true! Industrial terror is such a great description of that. Just came back after a few years and thought this was great.
As a symphonic percussionist I’m always shocked at how good some people can be at marching snare. You never fail to amaze me
right..my rudiments could never
