    30 days start weight 360 lbs and now 334 lbs and thats 26 lbs in 30 days. I am documenting my journey to be another voice in the fight for living the most optimal life a person can obtain. Nearest to zero carb and zero sugar for the rest of my life.

    I walked away from my addiction after a 40 year long relationship with cigarettes after listening to your videos because I finally got why I repeatedly failed at quitting smoking. The first couple of days I found myself still stepping outside onto the deck where I used to smoke but then realized that this was actually the mental break I needed, not the nicotine. So I planted rose bushes, hydrangeas and lavender around my deck. I make a point of getting up and going out onto the deck at least once an hour so that I don't sit all day. Seeing the blooms and smelling their scent is now my stress relief. The nicotine cravings are getting less because I don't think of cigarettes at all, but as soon as I see someone smoking I want a cigarette!

The change has added life to my years. At 66 I now am my own Doctor. I will keep learning from Doctors like you who really care. GOD BLESS.

    As a faculty member and a college administrator for 25 years, I can absolutely confirm that the current young generation…on balance…has no resiliency and no ability to cope effectively with stress. On top of the vaping and substance use, they need more counseling, social, and academic support than ever. It’s a serious problem and significant contribution to the rising cost of a college education.

    I abused carbs for years and then it became an addiction. I've been able to stay in control of that addiction by eating lower carb. Over the course of 11 years, I've been able to figure out my body's line. I can eat a piece of seasonal fruit. There are some foods that don't raise my blood glucose level (corn and baked/mashed potatoes), but there are some things I just can't eat or it starts a very slippery slope. The first day it's 1 cookie. The next day it's one cookie and some chips. The day after that I'm sneaking whole bunches of cookies and before I know it, I'm eating boxes of it at a time.
    But it is also a mental thing. While I get that initial high that feels soooo good. I very quickly feel low and it's not low from feeling guilty, but when my blood sugars are too high, I feel depressed. Everything makes me sad - so then I want to eat more carbs because they temporarily boost my mood.
    That is actually my biggest battle. I have Seasonal Affect disorder and I live in Maryland. Winter is hell for me. That is when I have a HELL of a time staying on top of the addiction. I simply don't care about anything, so I start eating carbs and before I know it, I've gained 40 pounds over the winter, and then I need to spend several months taking that weight off. It puts me in the diabetic range every year with my blood sugars. And then I get better with more light, and then late fall comes again and the cycle starts over. I'm hoping I've kicked it this year by finding more food alternatives to add to the mix in fall and winter.

    I appreciate your important thoughts about addiction and carbs. I notice in the comments here people that are on and off the bandwagon like a revolving door: you will always have to exercise personal restraint to succeed at anything but by adhering to a low carb program for years-not a month or two-you will enable yourself to better deal with the desire for carbs. And this, sir, is one other thing you are alone in emphasizing-fat adaptaptation takes two or more good years of low carb / carnivore and NOT a mere couple of months. I know of only one other person that has noted this as a guest on a keto channel of few years ago but he does not have his own youtube channel. Brilliant work here doctor.

    I am all for dealing with carbohydrate addiction. But when we refer to carbs, it is primarily ultra processed carbs and starchy foods. Ultra processed carbs are usually refined carbs + processed industrial seed oils. These usually go hand in hand. We should call it what it is not just carbs.
    Take for example nobody is addicted to plain boiled potatos. But everyone is addicted to french fries and potato chips.

      I consider myself a carb addict after over 40 years of carrying more than 100 lbs of excess weight. I have lost over 100 lbs at 3 different times in those years but this is the first time I’ve been able to keep it off. This time I finished up with Keto (less than 20 g of total carbs) but soon discovered that any amount of any types of carb, even veggies and salads will cause cravings to return. Have now gone full carnivore and finally am free of any cravings. I have also had to have in the last 8 years 4 total joint replacements, both hips and both knees. Too many years of carrying too much weight on too small a frame. I think that qualifies as harm.

    • @yelenaangeleski3354

      True, but once you've abused carbs so long that you've developed a metabolic disorder (insulin resistance or the metabolic syndrome), ANY type of carbs will trigger both insulin spikes and instant water retention. I'm on a very low-carb at present and discovered this myself when I overate a couple of days ago. All of my carbs for that high-carb day were clean, healthy carbs from vegetables and seeds/nuts, yet at 120 g of even the cleanest carbs possible, I swelled up and didn't feel at all well the day after. And yet, the American Diabetic Association, whose recommendations are followed all over the world, still counsels people with full-blown diabetes to have up to 250 g of carbs a day!

    If we developed a carb addiction before we were old enough to develop any real emotion management strategies, how do we teach ourselves what we should've known prior to developing the addiction and remove the carbs as the management system?

    • @mindsetwithmarie676

      Instead of using habits that disconnect you from your emotions, try activities or habits that channel your emotions in a positive ways, such as journaling, meditating, going for a walk, playing an instrument, whatever allows you to express yourself. It's easy to check out by sitting down eating junk and watching TV. Do things that are more engaging, that require you to be present with yourself. Good luck ox

    Part of my healing from carb addiction (aside from the carnivore diet) is working with a really great personal coach. She has taught me how to process things and work through emotions in a healthy way. I can’t recommend it enough-an outside source to help you see where your thought and emotional processes are underdeveloped.

  • @sherrlalonde
    @sherrlalonde 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is brilliant! Thank you for making it so clear. When I was a child (into my young adulthood) I used exercise for my emotional management. My mother understood me as a child. When she would see tension building in me, she would assign running to me, while she cheered me on. Unsurprisingly, I became an athlete, and the effects of eating crap didn’t show on my body. Later in my life, with work keeping me busy, I started using carbs and would exercise less and less. Then at around my mid twenties I became a vegetarian and the combo of adding more and more carbs for food and emotional control, I became fat. I am a perfect example of what you discuss here. Having a ketogenic lifestyle for the past 5 months and relearning active emotional management techniques, I am down 36 pounds, my health is returning (by the way I was not able to have children because of carb addiction), and I am much happier. At 59 years old, it’s never too late. Your work and your message means the world!

I was raised on the finish your plate club but didn’t have weight issues until late 20’s. In my late 30’s I started going out to restaurants more and continued clean the plate. Overeating was my problem. I have a box of my fav See’s candy in my cupboard for 4 mo now that I haven’t touched since starting keto. All sorts of things not keto friendly I have not been tempted nor crave. By weighing all my food intake I quickly learned portion control. Now eat when hungry stop just before full. Down 40 lbs with 60 more to go. I actually started for health benefits and love the weight loss bonus. I still love your philosophy and will follow you. You have helped me so much!!

    "Use=>Abuse=>Addiction"...great way of framing the levels. For me, years of carb "abuse" led to a chemical carb addiction. Once I became insulin resistant after years of carb abuse, I realized even relatively modest carb intake was causing me to snack too much. I know you consider snacking a purely emotional event, however there is a chemical component (to addiction) that I believe deserves more "airplay/research" (not purely emotional). Why? Once I "detoxed" and fat adapted (which took ~1 month), my (chemical) addiction to carbs discontinued. When I have parents/friends over I offer them pasta/cake and have 0 problem not indulging (again, now that I'm fat adapted). I have Mexican Coke in my fridge for well over 1 year and haven't touched it. If my carb addiction had emotional roots, that coke would have been consumed by now. Also important to note I don't have an addictive personality in general.

    Thank you so much to Dr Cywes. Listening (carefully) to each of your videos as they come out is helping me personally understand how and why, I have got into the rut of obesity, insulin resistance and using carbs as my emotional support. The bad things that can come into every person’s life (for me the death of our only son, huge hormone disruptions and a myriad of other things) have contributed to the building of a house of cards that offered no substantive safe shelter from the emotional harms. I have scheduled a telemed appointment with Dr C much later in the year and really hope to set up an appointment with Jane as well to help me in my own efforts to engage in a ketogenic/carnivore and fasting lifestyle. I’ve been doing this (ketogenic and IF) alone for 2 months and started at 170lbs (have stalled now at 152)…so the help will be most welcome even though I am feeling much better. To other casual viewers who have stumbled across this…Dr C. Is doing us all a great service and I encourage you to keep listening.

    I am the parent of three 'grown' kids- 26, 22 and 19. I think it would be absolutely and utterly fantastic if you would do a video or two geared to this younger generation. I can try to talk to them about emotional management strategies, using things as crutches (smoking, alcohol, vaping, carbs etc) and endorphin/seratonin etc but I'm their Mom and it's blah, blah, blah. You are very relatable in the way that you speak and I think an overall general message for that age group would be so, so very helpful for them. Please consider this @Dr. Cywes!! @#thecarbaddictiondoc

    Thank you for this video. I needed a kick in the pants to be able to step back and tell myself I am only doing myself harm by continuing to think I can eat that slice of bread or that cookie without consequences. I have abused bread and sugar for years, two years ago I was able to stop and lose a tremendous amount of weight and get my health markers back into the normal range. But recently I have been slipping in a slice of bread with butter or a "keto" cookie that shouldn't bother me but I am seeing the effects and I am going to have to stop again. It is too easy to think that you can control your wants it is almost impossible to stop when you know that you have to when you have to eat to live. The pull for that ice cream or that slice of sweet cake is real and it takes more than just not having it in the house to get to the point that you don't think about it and how good it tastes and the sugar rush you get when you eat it.

    Theirs no doubt I’ve got carb addiction, leave me with people around I’m fine. But leave me alone in a room with carbs poorly hidden & I’m struggling fighting off the just 1 won’t hurt & before I know it I’m struggling not to binge, yes I know it’s emotional events, still struggling mentally to stick to my no. Thankfully doesn’t happen every day & gives me time to recover. Trying to find a bridge I can stick to that doesn’t push me off.
    Currently trying keto chow as an experiment while staying mostly carnivore, don’t know if its helping or hurting yet, so far still early.
    Btw I was down to 240 in late 2017, then I had 1 of my dad’s diet pepsi after 5 years of no soda at all, then couldn’t stop drinking it, & then was on homemade keto strawberry ice cream. Now back to weighing 290 because I’m struggling to find consistency.

      accountability is key... and you actually know this already, so I'm just gonna break thru the mental fog the addiction brings. When you are around others, you "have control", when alone you "have no control". We all want to look good to others, be well thought of. Personal example - when I'm jogging and hear a vehicle approaching, I pull myself up a bit taller, firm up my arm swing, close my mouth, put on a smile...silly, right? Find an online support group, find a "sober" partner, be honest - just knowing you WILL report any slips helps you not to slip. God bless ❤️🙏❤️

    Sorry, Doc, as much as I appreciate your wisdom, I have to strongly disagree with you on that: I've smoked from age 13-21 and I was (and still am, 44 now) strongly addicted to nicotine. I quit for good, but I know that one cigarette would be enaugh to reinflamme my addiction (thinking about it gives me at this very moment the bodily feeling of a nicotine craving). I didn't have cancer or any other health issues when I quit at age 21. Still I was addicted at that time. Same with carbs: I know I'm addicted, although I am in a perfect BMI for over 10 years now and have perfect blood tests and I am far from metabolic syndrome. You don't have to suffer the health consequences firstly to be an addict.
    You are spot on on everything regarding biology and medicine, but I think you have a tendency to oversimplify psychology, the root of addiction and anthropology.
    Love your work, don't have to agree on everything, right? :)

    Foods do not need to be carbs to be addictive. Even as a carnivore I struggle with food addiction. If I do not put leftovers away immediately, I will continue to eat my meat even knowing it will make me puke. In just under 3 years on keto/carnivore I have lost 90 pounds, got off blood pressure meds, and brought my A1c back to normal, but food is still a daily struggle.

      I don't understand the name 'protein sparing' modified fasts...if It severely restricts calorie consumption while increasing the intake of protein-rich foods. Why is it called protein sparing?

    • @haveabanana2930
      @haveabanana2930 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@angiesrecipes it's because with appropriate protein intake, your muscles, hair, etc will be spared during the "fast." Muscles are especially spared when exercise is also implemented. When carbs and fats are kept low, the body will go at the fat reserves for fuel. When fats are higher, the body will use the some of the dietary fat for fuel and it will keep the reserves it has stored. That's why people on high fat diets experience a stall. Proteins are the building blocks and fats and carbs are fuel. When the body has carbs it wont burn fats. When it has excess dietary fat, it wont burn the fat reserves. That said, this sort of thing shouldn't be done everyday. Three times a week should see excellent results. Hope that helps! Also, if u look up PSMF there are people that can explain better :)
