    "You cannot break a habit that you're still doing." I NEED THIS POUNDED INTO MY BRAIN!!! I started Keto for the 4th or 5th time and what did I do - make a "keto cheesecake" oh my gosh!!!! This morning I was thinking, hey I need more almond flour so I can make the "keto mug bread." I have a family that does not understand my carb addiction - actual conversations: me: "I just can't have cakes or cookies in my house, I just can't stop eating the crap." Sister response: "There's nothing wrong with having a cake or cookies in your house - just eat a slice of the cake and don't have anymore til the next day." Seriously????? I have no idea how to even do that!!! I heard a story once of a woman who bought a cake for her family, they ate half the cake after dinner. The next day she ate the other half, went to the store, bought the same exact cake and ate half of that cake so when the family came home, there was still "half the cake from the night before." That's me - no I've never really done that particular thing, but I've binged on carbs so bad that I could barely breathe and I've done that many times. 37 years ago I was smoking and doing drugs - I kicked both of them cold turkey, just stopped and never went back, I've never had an issue with alcohol - probably because it tastes so horrible, this carb addiction is the worst thing ever and I've yo yo'd with my weight ever since. The year I stopped smoking I gained 60 pounds and it's been an uphill battle ever since. I am so thankful for these videos Dr. Cywes, so very thankful for you and the incredible work you're doing for us addicts. So sorry for this long comment, I'm just coming to such a truthful realization about myself through these videos. Wow.

      That is me! I ate half the cake, bought a new one and ate half of it so it looks like I didn’t touch it. You can do this. I am down 60 lbs, went from a 9.2 A1c to a 5.2. My embarrassment is that I can’t get off my diet pop.

    Thank you for addressing the real issues with carbs, emotional eating. People try to offer good advice about dieting, but most fail because of the emotional side. So few people understand that you can't remove an emotional crutch unless you have a healthier solution for your emotions. It would be great to see dietitians and therapists working together on the same health plan.

    The best advice I've heard about snacking is to ask yourself "are you hungry enough for a whole meal? If not, why do you want to eat? Boredom? Anxiety?" So when my partner asks me if I want something in between meals, I'll tell him "I'm not hungry enough (for a whole meal)."

I’ve been OK for months at a time. Then I mess up and it continues. I’m not overweight but I think I am so I know it’s a struggle and stress does not help. I love these talks

    • @LukepSH88
      @LukepSH88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@scottbrinks9248 so called 'strict intermittent fasting windows' will lead to failure - just don't eat when you're not hungry. you need to learn the difference between emotional hunger and genuine nutritional hunger. the former means you'll eat whenever you feel like it's appropriate, the latter you'll eat probably twice a day, lots of meat, eggs, fish. doing this in practice is difficult but gets easier everyday you follow it and you learn so much about your self. you'll never be done and will always be practicing this skill. once accepted you can never fail - this doesn't mean you'll once in a while eat processed crap but it's understanding why you eat that - is it really because of it is someones birthday or is it because you feel tired, low, stressed? As a result, adopt better emotional management to cope better, and develop resilience, good luck.

      Add more fat to your meal. Beef trimmings or suet are cheap. I get my beef trimming from a local butcher for free. I cut them up in little bite size squares and fry them. Another trick is to always have hard boiled eggs available. If I'm not really hungry I can't eat one bite of egg. My brain and throat say heck no. But if I'm really hungry I can eat one with no problem and no seasonings on it. Tastes amazing! But if I'm emotional eating it tastes awful.

    Before I started to change my diet I am totally a Carbs addict (I say I am like an alcoholic would say at an AA meeting).I love bread, bananas, mashed potato, crisps and anything else carb like LOTS of fruit. I was taken in by the food industry that told me I could eat my carbs and be healthy.
    I have had an elevated blood sugar level of 100 since I was 40 I am now 59 and my last blood sugar result was 107 and my doc said I am now borderline type 2 diabetic. My body weight is 75Kg and I am 1.80 M tall with a BMI of 23 which puts me in the healthy BMI category.
    I work at home and in the morning I would eat 2 slices of wholemeal bread (Thinking this is ok cos its wholemeal lots of fibre) then snack around 3 to 4 slices in an afternon with just butter on it.Then another 2 or 3 slices in the evening.That is a usual 8 slices a day of bread! Oh and now lets talk about my alcohol thats not carbs right? Wrong there are plenty of carbs on a beer or 3.
    I am now on an experiment, no bread and no beer low amount of fruit(no bananas)
    I want to see if the high fat medium protein and low carbs will be on my sugar levels
    I am doing for 3 weeks and this week I have had my blood works done.I will see on monday if my blood sugar has reacted to my diet.Lets see. I am looking forward to the results.
    P.S. 3 weeks in and I am starting to feel better in my health.

    THIS was excellent Dr. Cywes and even though i've been eating keto/carnivore for almost 5 mos now, you made me aware that I still have a lot I need to work on. I quit "smoking" 3 yrs ago - but I am still vaping. Thank you so much for helping me to see I still have a long way to go. Honestly, the vaping is something that I have no good answer about how exactly to quit - other than cold turkey - but i've always relied on nicotine when trying to change other unhealthy habits. This is going to take some thought. BTW, I called your office today and they are checking to see if you take my Medicare health insurance - I'm really hoping you do. Now that I’m 47 everything is nearly impossible but I was 25 pounds over my goal weight for seven years. I would think that this a sign of insulin resistance. Like mentally I could not fight the sugar and carbs. Finally I seen it no other way and now that most carbs are out of my system I don’t even want to snack on candy now. I still have “Rottweiler ” (sp?) syndrome because the act/process of chewing and swallowing are the only things that truly make me feel alive anymore. I’m addicted to feeling stuffed. How do you fill that hole? I listen to your video and realize I do all three and constantly have to fight against it. I was doing great following Fung's processes and then was in a car accident and broke my back. In fact, I had scheduled an appointment with your dietician and then had to cancel as I was in the hospital, and also with you and then canceled as I was trying to recover from surgery. Feeling lost as I'm still trying to recover and frustrated as the pain doesn't seem to want to go away, and struggling with once again with the entire process of eating, nutrition, and healing. Guess I need to reschedule....

      Hang in there. You can do this!! I shattered 2 vertebrae 4/2019 and have hardware. Still struggled with pain issues but 2/21 I started keto. Pain 1/10 most days. And I supplement with CBD oil several times a week. I’m down 40# and I’m sure that too has helped my poor back not to have the extra weight. I’ve restarted all the exercises PT had given me (PT stopped due to lockdown n I didn’t follow thru much). You will definitely benefit following thru with Jane and Dr Cywes. Best of luck on your journey!!

    I believe addiction is natural. It's why we have a dopamine reward system to learn and adapt. The problem is really easy accessibility to carbs. Never in the history of evolution have we ever had access to refined carbs and sugars 24x7 like how we do now. But whenever we did come across some honey or fruits we gorged on them like no tomorrow

    • @robertcywes2966
      @robertcywes2966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Harm is not natural. Addiction implies harm.

    • @JYAN2852
      @JYAN2852 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I don't disagree with you. But addiction is the body's physiological natural response due to over stimulation of the reward system whether if it results in harm or not. 24x7 accessibility is the real problem I still believe. Isn't that why you intentionally don't keep ice cream and M&M's in the house? If we didn't have easy access to harmful addictive substances then addiction is a non-issue. We are all addicted to something I would think

  • @trainersboxbreaks

    So, I guess I am missing something. What is the answer to the question when do you eat if not when you are hungry? At what point does one decide that they do in fact need to have nutrition or is he simply saying not to eat snacks out of habit. For instance, I have been trying to stop myself from eating right after I get home from work. I normally get home at 5 and have a lot of hunger. I left a couple hours early today from work and experienced the same hunger at 3! I realize that this is habit based and something that needs to be controlled but at what point is it okay to actually eat? Is it when there are no other cues that could be driving your hunger?
