GH5 in Real World AF, High ISO Test (kind of)

  • The GH5's autofocus is better than it has been given credit for -- I'd call it cinematic -- but contrast detect is contrast detect. I bought it and am using it primarily as a manual focus camera -- and in that capacity, especially with the focus transition capability, the GH5 is brilliant.
    As for high ISO: with a little TLC in post (i.e., something like Neat NR) and in the real world of lay audiences, I think you can get to a usable 12,800 in a number of scenarios.

      Based on your series I decided to sell my Nikon D750 and have purchased GH5, so thanks. I am just debating between lenses as I am torn between 12mm 1.4 vs 25mm 1.4 as I had 50mm 1.4 for my Nikon.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Swapnil Bhartiya Congrats! The 12 and 25 have very different fields of view. I need a 25 or 30; I want that 12. :) YMMV.

    • @SwapnilBhartiya
      @SwapnilBhartiya 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a tech journalist I cover a lot of tech conferences and my 50mm used to give me enough field of view - sharp to capture keynote speakers from front row and also conduct on site interviews with clearly separated subject at the same time it was also a good street lens. I am certainly sold on 12 mm 1.4 and have pre-ordered on Amazon. I had bought 42.5 1/2 but fount it's way too tight for the work that I need it for so that one is going back. I am not sure about the sharpness of 25mm. What's your recommendation, I will certainly not go below/over 1.4. Thanks again for prompt response.

    I have to say that I've been working with the GH2 for 6 years and I'm so impressed with the ISO performance of the GH5. I mean, at ISO 800, my GH2 is producing a lot a noise, and the GH5 still looking so good at 3200. Wow 😮

    I have to say I love this camera. It's a joy to use. It feels like a camera that was designed ergonomically, button layout-wise, and feature wise to shoot video. To shoot it well and without requiring the user to jump through hoops.
    The footage is gorgeous, the evf is crisp, and the colors are great. I still have the Sony a7r ii but haven't touched it since the GH5 arrived.
    I'm one of those people who couldn't care less about AF, but when I've used it it works. This system is contrast based so more than settings I find there has to be contrast levels it can latch on to. Soft curves and mushy lighting aren't going to work here. Hard edges and good lighting...

    Once again, love the videos. The GH5 is so very tempting. I'm heavily invested in the E-mount system at this point (and really have no complaints), but I'm looking to add a second body to my rig A7R2 (as a backup and compliment). If Sony hadn't completely hobbled the video capabilities of the A9 I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up (well, I'd hem and haw over the price), but seeing real world examples of the GH5.....as you said a few videos ago, it "has me thinking".

    Bit confused over what AF mode you've used here. The official Panasonic memo was that 1-Area AF was the best to use. It looks like you're using a few other modes instead, like custom multi, and calling it "Area AF". Beautiful video, great work!

      @3BMEP  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been trying the 1-area and moving it around with the joystick to keep on my targets. I think it's producing good results? The downside is the recording flashing red dot on the screen disappears while I'm doing that.

    • @charbax
      @charbax 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the bad AF, before buying I have to wait and see if they can fix it in a firmware update, or not.
      I did a few tests with GH5 and 12-60mm Leica, and 8-18mm Leica, at tradeshows, but in my tests (you can search GH5 on my channel) the AF was not yet good enough for me to finally be able to go ahead and buy the GH5, that I have been wanting to buy so much for all the other features that it's got. Too bad, I could have been using GH5 for months shooting hundreds of videos by now already. For now, I have to stick with my Sony AX53 camcorder because the A6500 might overheat, max out at 29min, for me not be usable.

    Using a Sigma lens means you do not have DFD and you have crippled the autofocus system.
    Only Lumix G lenses have data in their firmware for the DFD system, also those marked "HD" have near-silent motors for video work.
    It is important to learn how the camera focusses. The GH4 which I have used for several years has 49 AF areas. These are not focus points but areas. If you use the Pinpoint AF you will see that it can select areas much smaller than any of the 49 areas it uses. In AFS mode it will lock onto a focal point and stay there; in AFF and AFC it will refocus as you pan.
    Movie mode has a "continuous AF" function specific to it, if this is set to "Off" the camera maintains the focus position at the start of the recording, irrespective of AFS/AFF/AFC. With "Continuous AF" set "On", movie focus movement is deliberately slower (than stills) to provide smooth transitions.
    AFS, AFF, AFC, MF and Movie's "continuous focus" are separate to the focus areas (face recog, tracking, 49-Area, 1-Area, Pinpoint, Custom, etc).
    If there is insufficient light, AFF and AFC will revert to AFS. The colour of the focus lock dot changes from green to yellow (red is not locked).

    The model train "world" is so impressive. The GH5 AF tracking...not so much. I haven't seen any consistent examples that suggest one can rely on it for critical shoots. That said, I am still impressed with the new features and improvements, and giving the GH5 serious consideration.

    Nice. I just got the gh5 and love it. Going a bit crazy understanding the auto focus. Your test is pretty accurate, when grabbing some b roll in this type of location, who cares if you miss focus a couple a times, one can repeat. What are the exact settings that you used for the test. Again thanks a million for all your help.

    • @3BMEP
      @3BMEP  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I turned custom AF off, and found the best focus came when I pinched down the 225 AF points to a dozen or less. That's it! This was shot in 4K/24p as you can see, so it's far from useless!

    That train lay-out is incredible! The attention to detail is amazing! The GH5 looks good as well, not for me as a camera, but it does look sweet. I'm curious if Izotope would work to crush that back ground train noise in your stand up and his interview? Just curious, I'm not knocking anything at all, I've just heard a lot of good things about the software and thinking about buying it, and this would seem a great example for its purpose! Does anyone use it, and would it work in this situation? Thank you!

    You do have (some) metadata! All of Panasonic's cameras embed a snapshot of the shooting settings at the start of a video file. Sadly there isn't a lot of software out there that can read it (I use exiftool, personally). And it doesn't help if you change settings in the middle of a file.

      Thijs Goedegebuure Yep, no way GH5 is an AF tracking beast. That classification belongs to Canon's dual pixel AF and Sony's latest PDAF cameras. As I've said in other vids, this is a big reason why I still have my a6300.

    Thanks for great video. I have a question. I had Nikon D850 which I sold to get GH5 as I need continuous video recording for my events. However, unlike Nikon I am not able to make changes to ISO/shutter or aperture during video recording or in video mode. Even if I am using the awesome 42.5 lens, but I am in dim light conditions while I can adjust shutter/aperture or ISO to get the desired picture, there are no effects on videos. I cranked the ISO all the way to 6400 and dropped shutter to 40 still the video was dark. Any opinion on that? Thanks in advance.

      Yes constant preview is on. Once I hit the record button, I can't change anything. BTW, thanks for prompt reply. Love you!

      Swapnil Bhartiya I don't known that particular lens, but does it have an aperture ring?

      Yes. It has aperture ring. I also tried on 12 mm 1.4 (both super expensive lens). Once I hit the record button even changing aperture from ring doesn't take changes. I just tested, if I use the movie mode from the dial then also I can't change any of the three settings. Strange.

      Swapnil Bhartiya which movie mode are you in? Do you have ISO set to auto? If Movie mode isn't set to manual (e.g., A S or P) you know it will auto adjust exposure using the other parameters...

    I'm not convinced. Skipping the GH5. Let's hope Sony's a7 iii saves us all.

    The GH5 is a great little cam. My Sony FS5 is collecting more and more dust....

    Hey, thanks for all the great content. I just purchased the GH5, and I used your advice to create this video: th-cam.com/video/3w1OAKrGDq0/w-d-xo.html but I still wasn't able to get tack sharp focus. Also final cut pro didn't have render in 4k option, even though I shot it in 4k. I'm still starting out, and I'd welcome any suggestions you might have. Thanks again for considering my questions.

      Lauren Greenspan First, congrats on your purchase - enjoy! Second, thanks for sharing the footage! AF in 4K - especially when on a gimbal - isn’t the GH5’s forte, but please tell me more about how you set it up. Finally, did you set the project to 4K in FCPX for the edit; and did you shoot 8-bit or 10-bit?

      Thank you so much for this reply. I have learned a tremendous amount about filmmaking from you, and I'm so grateful that you'd take the time to look at my first attempts to use the GH5. I used a Lumix 20mm 1.7 lens and set aperture f/5.6 with aperture priority. As you can tell from the footage, I way overused slow motion, as the whole thing was shot in 60fps. 8-bit. I believe my AF settings were from JIX SAW who recommends:
      1 set AF/AE Lock to AF-On
      2 Quick AF. Turn On
      3 Eye Sensor Af. On
      4 Pinpoint AF Time. Set To Short
      5 Af Assist Lamp. Turn On
      6 Focus Release Priority. Set both options to Focus.
      7 AF+MF. Turn On
      8 Continuous Af turn on
      9 Custom AF turn off
      Used Custom Multi
      press Save and Select under neath it
      press C1 keep the + in the middle with No focus points set otherwise it will hunt
      I've been a Canon 5D shooter up until this point, and also primarily worked in Premiere. I decided to try a friend's FCPX since I am not too keen on making proxy files for all of my 4k projects. But I am a shiny brand new beginner when it comes to 4k shooting, so I didn't realize I had to set up FCPX in advance to handle the 4k footage. Thanks for that tip. And thank you again for responding.
