    Out of all the youtube videos that claim to show how to fix the GH5 AF issue, this young man has done the best job by far. For many of us that are new to video Matt begins with the very simple starting point, making sure your have the Mode dial set to the Video icon. Sounds stupid but many of us are really just beginning. He then takes us through to the other option I did not see from anyone else and that is SS/Gain Operation and then finally to Synchro Scan. Very well done and I'll be coming back to Matts channel in the future. I like this kid.

  • @YodaYeo

    Having played with the custom settings I'll shed a bit of light and will more than likely get the pulsing under control. Basically the speed increases or decreases how far the camera adjusts the checking image, as a guess I'd say 0 speed and -1 sensitivity would be a good string point for general stuff and fast tracking subjects to and from the camera would benefit from the +5 speed. An ideal use fir the custom settings buttons :)

    • @mattkrieg9669
      @mattkrieg9669  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YodaYeo interesting, I was playing around with the settings the other day and basically doin that anything besides +5 removed most of the pulsing. I also found it had s lot to do with which lens you are using, the wider lenses seem to hunt more.

    You're getting nasty focus breathing / pulsing which is most likely due to your custom AF settings being on +5 which is probably too fast.

    Thanks for sharing the info! We use a GH5 as our a cam for a run and gun style series and it's been the Achilles heel of the camera. A couple questions:
    1) Are you using AFS/AFF or AFC? Have you experimented with the various settings to see which one's the winner?
    2) What about other AF modes with the 179 degree shutter angle? 225, the one with a small area of AF points as well. I normally use 1 area because that was best before, but sometimes it's not the right tool for the job.
    3) What about just using 1/60 shutter speed instead of going to 179 degrees? I've heard it can do similar things???
    4) Did the results get better for you with going down to 160, 150, 140...etc? Where's the best performance (Although 179 looks great from here!)
    I've got the leica nocticron and the panny 12-35 so I will give some of your findings a test on these lenses.
    Thanks again!

    • @mattkrieg9669
      @mattkrieg9669  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was using AFC and I haven't found a huge difference between that and AFS/AFF. I did find the one point system to be the best out of all the other AF modes. I have not tried just using 1/60th shutter speed instead of the shutter angle yet. To me it looked like 179 and lower was all about the same, but more testing will definitely need to be done to be sure. Thanks for the comment!

    That pulsing AF is driving me crazy, completely unusuable imho.

    • @DefiantFilmsTV
      @DefiantFilmsTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And saying that it is as good as Sony or Canon is completely misleading. It isn't, as clearly evident from your own video. :P

    • @mattkrieg9669
      @mattkrieg9669  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wouldn't say it's as good as say Canon's AF system. However this little fix lets the GH5 at least compete with it. The pulsing also seems to be worse on the wider lenses, you can see that when I used the 45mm outside there was little to no pulsing.

    • @dejffjed
      @dejffjed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not a matter of camera. It is a matter of AF itself. For video work - useless, stupid tool.

    • @qtben17
      @qtben17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The pulsing look on the trees doesnt look good in professional applications. A client may think that the camera is defective and might turn them away. And not sure how does this af performance compete with sony and canon. Probably on the same level of an adapted lens that keeps hunting and has lots of focus breathing - which are unacceptable

    • @MrMackinven
      @MrMackinven 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pulsing background is because he has the focus setting ramped up to 5. Try 2. There are some other videos talking about this

  • @elliotlowndes5219
    @elliotlowndes5219 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I have a burning question... and not about the autofocus fix, although great job Yoda Yeo! If, before this fix, everyone was running around shooting with a 180 degree shutter, what did you do to knock down the light at larger apertures, and especially if you're shooting V-log outdoors? The two main ND solutions have major drawbacks for me: 1. Vari ND filters - these are great until you change lenses and also have to spend the time unscrewing the filter and screwing it back onto the new lens if you remember to do it. This also assumes that you have adapted all the filter threads of all your lenses to the same size so you can swap filter between lenses, or I guess the super expensive option is to buy Vari-ND for every lens which is great until you're in a low light situation and forget the ND on the front of your lens. Option 2. - Matte box and ND filter set. Aside from matte-boxes being either really expensive, or really cheap and very badly made to the point you just want to throw it down the stairs; Once you have attached the matte box (presumably with LWS bars), the problem here is that the whole rig becomes bigger heavier and generally less portable for run and gun style shooting. It also makes the camera REALLY conspicuous so throws the option of street videography out of the window. Although a good matte-box stops direct light from hitting your ND (which is SO nice). I ask this question because after trying both these options for ND I have found myself often just throwing the 180 degree shutter rule out of the window if I'm in a situation where I don't have time to be messing with the gear. I make sure the shutter is at least expressed in degrees so that the shutter speed is always a factor of the frame rate. But to be honest no one really notices when I do use faster shutter speeds (clients), especially if the content is destined for nowhere more than social media etc. I find that the ability to maintain a good exposure at the aperture you actually want, rather than need, to be much more impactful on the perceived quality (by my clients) of the footage than any motion blur or lack thereof. Would love to know peoples' thoughts on the matter, but you know, only from people who actually earn money from what they shoot. No pixel peepers or lens collectors please. Thanks

    • @mattkrieg9669
      @mattkrieg9669  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the way I go about it is as long as it looks good, you dont have to follow those film making rules to the T. Also the only time I use auto focus is when I'm making TH-cam videos like this. When I shoot videos for clients I use manual focus because I'm actually behind the camera. So this hack doesn't solve all your problems but in the case you're in proper lighting it works great. I was using a variable ND in the tests for this video and I still had issues with the background being blown out. As for indoor interview situations I'd say this 179 hack will suite you well, but as always use manual focus if you can.

    • @elliotlowndes5219
      @elliotlowndes5219 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, well like I say. I'm not here for the autofocus. Thanks for your reply. Someone should make a video about this though. If you search for 180 degree shutter rule, TH-cam is full of videos who's only message is "you should use a 180 degree shutter", which is great if you live your life on perfectly lit sets all the time, but for the majority of us making videos in the real world it would be nice to hear someone say "you know what, if it looks good, and the video works then don't stick to these rules if they're going to limit you creatively"

    Matt, thanks for this tip. I notice in some clips you can really see some drastic shutter movement. With your Leica 12-60mm you can see some funkyness going on in the sky. What is this? Is it like moreaying? Unfortunately I shot a lot of action on water and have a good amount of sky and water in my shots. To me something like that is borderline unacceptable to publish. Do you know how to remove that weird shutter but still be able to utilize the AF feature?

      @JamesAllenUK 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Worth it IMO. Some gorgeous natives lenses out there. The 45mm Olympus as shown in this video is cheap yet has truly stunning visuals (and decent AF). The 12-60 Leica has wonderful optics and also very good AF. Not got the 8-18 but from what I've seen it's sharp as a tack (though costs a pretty penny) ;) Awesome seeing them working so well with your fix. Not all are great - a couple of my natives are still pretty bad (though improved to a level).

    • @mattkrieg9669
      @mattkrieg9669  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Allen I don’t know if I’d call the Olympus 45mm cheap at $1200 haha you may be thinking of the f1.8 version. The one in this video is the 1.2 but I’m sure the difference is negligible.

    • @JamesAllenUK
      @JamesAllenUK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aha! Now I feel silly :) I should have checked the description and not assumed it wasn't the pro version. Probably as I own the 1.8 I just thought of that one. The AF looks superb on yours - I tested mine briefly yesterday and it was good but on reflection the pro seems quicker. I'm personally aiming to get the 42.5mm Leica but I imagine the pro is a total beast.

    • @mattkrieg9669
      @mattkrieg9669  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Allen I had a hard time deciding between the Leica 42.5 and the Olympus 45 pro but I ended up liking the bokeh more on the Olympus. I’m going to do a review of that lens soon!

  • @davidp158
    @davidp158 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for sharing this tip. Its a HUGE improvement. It doesn't seem to work with all lenses, but that's probably an issue within the particular lens.
    BTW, the trees in the outdoor shots look very strange as the camera hunts for focus. Do you have sharpening turned way up? If so, turn it all the way off. It doesn't add usable detail, and you can always sharpen in post.

    • @mattkrieg9669
      @mattkrieg9669  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The intense focus hunting was due to my AF settings being so high. I've recently uploaded a video showing how I've reduced it.

    Very heavy focus hunting forth and back several times each time the camera refocusses. Maybe reduce AF speed a bit to avoid this flickering background due to focal length. Not sure if it is otherwise useful at all, even if focus is now faster.

  • @FourKnown
    @FourKnown 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don't have to use the synchro scan setting. All you need to do is change from shutter angle to "SEC/ISO" and set the shutter speed to 1/60. It does the same thing. The reason is that on shutter angle it is not really choosing 1/60 but slightly under 1/60. I use one of my custom settings for auto focus. That way you can still use shutter angle on everything else.

    • @WaaProductions
      @WaaProductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Packard when you say you use one of your custom settings for autofocus, what do you mean? Can you elaborate?

    • @FourKnown
      @FourKnown 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Waa Productions Sure. So I tape a small chart on the back of my camera (Under the LCD screen) with custom settings on it. There are five. I have custom setting number two now set to "4K 30P Continuous Focus." That's what I have on the paper label so I can refer to it quickly and others can too. I set it to 1/60 with the "SS/Gain Operation" set to "SEC/ISO". So now whenever I rotate my dial to "C2" it goes to 1/60 sec not 180d.

    Just some feedback on lighting: compare what your face looks like in the garden (3:00), where it`s lit more evenly to what it looks like in your desk setting. I know you were trying set that classic portrait lighting there, but it makes your face look a little wierd. You may want to have that soft light not come straigth from the side but a little more from the front... Also, what happened in the af test in the garden on the leica lenses? They were pulsating really badly in the background.

    Even though the focus is supper snappy, it

    Ok what about you got to adjust angle to 218 because of the ambient led light?
    It’s great what you showed but what different lighting situation when you got to adjust angle to eliminate flickering

    Thanks for sharing. Did you do any testing at 180d? Also, it seems a little too fast, the focus breathing turned me off, then there are some cases where the focus “snaps” quickly, looks off. Other times it worked perfectly.

      pekoo87 you not suppose to change shutter speed on video. The ideal is using 180 degree. (1/60 in 30fps, 1/25 in 25fps Pal). You then adjust your iris and iso.

    • @mattkrieg9669

      Yes, I've found that it even works better at 60p since the contrast AF system has more frames to use. Try 120 shutter angle for 60p.

    • @Razeea
      @Razeea 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1/ (60 fps x (360/120)) = 1 / 60 fps x 3) = 1/180 shutter speed, is that right ? so lumix g85 can use 1/180 when record in 60p for best AF.
