    Fun fact part 2, Sony removing the ability to install 3rd party operating systems (a feature they promised during development) caused a swarm of people to reverse engineer and hack the ability back in within a matter of days.

      Yes and no, they needed the leaked keys to run the system. But yeah, they were all ps3 fat so they were running 3.55 ofw or earlier, they could have just made their own cfw back then. I am happy that people never gave up and nowadays we have HEN for people that can't downgrade to the 3.55

      No, that's not what military grade means...
      You've taken the whole "lowest bidder" thing to a new level...
      Lowest bidder doesn't mean cheap or junky.
      First of all, you have to qualify to be a bidder...
      You have to be able to produce a product that meets all of their requirements...
      If you can qualify as a manufacturer, then you can enter the bidding process. Bidding isn't open to just anyone.
      So yeah, it's funny to make the "lowest bidder" joke, but it's all based on ignorance of the process.

    They didn't need to update the console firmware... They were using Linux as their operating system and as far as I'm aware they weren't playing any games. They had full access to the consoles' functionality without needing Sony's firmware updates, and if they needed to access the hardware in a way that wasn't supported out of the box, they could write code to do so without the need to update official firmware. To boot, I'm 1,000% certain that they likely wrote a unique kernel that was likely flashed in place of any official firmware.

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +540

      This. I wanted to call bullshit on the idea that a Sony update ended the project. They wouldn't be so foolish as to update the firmware once their project was up and running.

    • @zyxwvutsrqponmlkh
      @zyxwvutsrqponmlkh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

      So... one huge issue with this was Sony gimped the "Cell" in Linux mode somewhat and completely hobbled the GPU to hell and back.
      Also Sony was subsidizing these at launch by about $250, so they really wanted the to play games to make that back up.

    • @evilmonkeywithissues
      @evilmonkeywithissues 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +77

      @@zyxwvutsrqponmlkh That may be the case, but I'm relatively certain that if the military didn't write their own kernel for use with Linux, that they likely commissioned a unique kernel from Sony. Also, while they may have attempted to nerf the Cell Broadband, a dedicated engineer could undo that nerfing no problem with the unlimited resources that the Air force would have to throw at the project. Even private citizens were able to make better use of the hardware in Linux over time, which is why Sony backed down on touting dual boot as an option.

      2- Modern CPUs support things like 64 bit floating points, many x86 extensions etc that would make optimzing programs and running programs much better then the cell.
      3- because of modern manufactering proccesors, lets say that on paper a pentium from 2004 is better then a modern i9(obviously not the case, theoretical). With modern cpu manufactering, the i9 in practice would be 10x better.
      4- The tests done on a ps3 vs ps4 only show the ps3 being better on certain cases that is just better for the ps3 because of the cell processor. PS4 is a faster and better cpu, ps3 was just more optimized for supercomputers.

    I still can't believe they did that update. So many people bought PS3's to turn into lenox boxes.

      You could still get around the security that prevented 3rd party software, by then it wasn’t even worth running Linux unless you explicitly needed to.

      They kept updating but you could still flash firmware, my much later PS3 definitely has custom loader and I updated it without being tech savvy. Never put a disc in it, just installed games from PC.

    Fun fact: After that, Sony then purchased a bunch of Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet jet engines from the US military which Sony decided to use as cooling fans for the PS4.

    thats patently wrong, the government can change the task on the Linux or BSD OS as much as they would want, they would just opt to not upgrade the Firmware on the Playstation. Once they were setup they were likely in other OS the entire time.
