      Or just negotiate through email instead - it’s actually less of a hassle that way. Recruiters like to call you about the offer first because they want to trick you into accepting or negotiating on the phone first, which isn’t documented and puts them at an advantage since they might not call u at the most convenient time.

      Good chance that may do the trick. If not, its okay. It very well may pan out later.
      Try to never put yourself in a place where you can't advocate for your worth, even if it means delaying a job a bit longer. Focus on your skills and make yourself an asset.

    This happened to me recently, if they try to guilt you saying "I pay this employee X amount less than what you're asking and they've worked here for years" just flat out tell them "this does not concern me, and my salary is based on what I bring, not on other employees' compensation". The other employee might have less qualifications, experience, training, and that's none of your business.

    YES! The SILENCE has been my key in negotiation. Employers are genuinely surprised when you may not jump to appease them in conversation right away, leading to them having to begin/end their point for once. Whereas they typically expect the candidate to just speak into the void until they have a sense of who you are/your worth $$ LOL. Love your videos so much Erin! Thank you for all you do!

    Using silence is one of the biggest things that people should learn when negotiating.
    People try to fill the silence and end up arguing your points for you, and since *they're* the ones saying it, they convince themselves.

    Just wanted to let you know that 2 of your videos helped my brother so much. The one about company A not getting back to you about a job offer while conpany B does and the other video was what to do when you accepted an offer but your dream job offers you afterwards.
    He was cross referencing your videos all weekend to send emails. He has 3 companies. The lowest one offerend him a job 1st and he was awaiting the other 2 to reply. The best one never did though.
    Without you, he would still be stressing and probably have taken the offer from the lowest end job because he feels it's wrong to leave, which as you explained, is not.

    The silent reply is a great tactic. Especially when you accidentally use it and in reality you were just too nervous to realize they were done talking. Happened to me and they ended up just accepting my counter. Sometimes its about what you don’t say

    Also, ASK FOR MORE PTO! Especially if they can't go up in salary. I got an extra week just by asking, so I have as much time off as someone who's been at the company for 5 years. This is something that's more valuable to me than money. My husband is a lawyer so we'd be financially just fine even if i made $0, but I live in a different state from my family. With less than 4 weeks of time off, i have to pick between seeing my family, taking a personal vacation, and having the occasional day for myself. As it is, 4 weeks really only just covers it

    It’s not just about the cash. My benefits started immediately (no 90 day probation on them) and they’re awesome. I also got a company truck - all expenses paid - to drive. I work primarily from home and am in charge of my own schedule (for the most part, with exception of virtual mandatory meetings). The salary they offered was already $1200/month more than I made in my previous job and would only go up. Remember, the salary is just the start and benefits packages can add another 30% to your income (especially if they’re 100% paid by the company), so don’t get too greedy out of the gate or you might just talk yourself out of a job!

    Chances are that they'll say, "Let me check and I'll get back to you".....and then never do because they went with the candidate that was next on their ranking who they can pay less. Unless you're a literal genius, companies really don't care. They'd rather get the person who they can pay less because their rationale is that they can always learn on the job.

    Unfortunately, many employees don't speak with the person who can make that decision. In fact, the person who may inform them that they are hired are quite a bit removed from the locus of power, so when she asks for a higher salary, the person may either say "well, THIS is the compensation package" or "I can ask...". My current (which, fortunately, started me out at a salary that was more than I had anticipated) didn't even send an HR person to contact me. They sent someone in billing simply because she was available and there was no "negotiating" to be done. I could have said "yes" or "no". She wouldn't have been bothered one way or another other than perhaps being annoyed that this specific task would be carried over to the next candidate.

    This is not how hiring works from a talent acquisition specialist. When a new position opens up there is a salary for that position and that is what you're offered. For most positions there is no negotiating because before the requisition was opened there was a budget and that budget was determined to be X amount of dollars for your role.

      Oh no, my dear fellow TA. Although the budget or salary range is stapled into the hiring requisition that does not eliminate the opportunity for a candidate to negotiate an offer. Typically, what is offered to the candidate is within range. If they counter, and an employer accepts it's most likely due to their request being within budget. If an employer actually conducts market salary research on a role, to be competitive, then they'd know if a candidate's counter is within or out of range of market salary. I always encourage my clients to never provide a firm or fixed # when asked about salary expectation before final interview stage. Instead, they should inquire about the role's salary range including closing candidate interview questions to gather more insight into the role's expectations to leverage themselves during the offer stage. When or if the role is offered at a lower salary than expected, then they can negotiate i.e., using this video as an example to follow as reference. If this video was a real scenario, the candidate may not have known the salary/salary range for the role because she asked, "Can you make it $70K..." Never ask for what you want, instead make it the requirement with supportive reason and await the outcome. It's very important to advocate your value.

    ALWAYS get the offer in writing. I've worked for people who would bait and switch, claim they never offered what they did, and renege on an offer without telling the employee, just giving them a paycheck with the wrong rate. I was the lucky one because I did get it in writing.

    Pretty much the exact method I have used for every job. All except for one the answer was always “sorry, we don’t negotiate the starting pay,” or “we always start employees at this pay and can’t make an exception.” Only once did it work, and it was for $2 more per hour.

      I'd be hesitant to accept a job when offered on the spot. It can be a red flag about an employer indicating theyre desperate. Even if you plan to accept, I'd always say "I'm going to need to review the offer before accepting, can I have it in writing and I will get back to you by tomorrow"

      you say thank you but you need to sleep on it. or you have other offers you are considering but you will make a decision by x date... (1-2 days is fair) Unless they need someone to start tomorrow there is no reason they can't wait 2 days.

    I ended up negotiating the salary on my new job even though it was alright a 45% raise and I got an additional $3k which wasn’t a ton but I couldn’t complain given the huge increase already. Don’t be someone that just takes the first thing offered! Remember they want you, so play hard to get a little bit 😊

    Waiting in silence even after receiving an answer is actually an interrogation technique used to get criminals to mention additional details about their alibi/crime as well. It works well since humans naturally feel pressured to continue conversations if it begins to get awkward or die down.

    My former company used an algorithm to assign possible salaries based on education level/work experience. so even though I had 4 years hands-on experience with the company, I was worth less than the straight-out-of-college higher that nuked the department I now had to fix

    You don’t need to justify why you would like more money, and it’s usually a corporate recruiter that discusses with HR and comes back with the response. You need to be very diligent in your research before throwing a number out. If your ask is outside the payband, what you bring is irrelevant unless your skillset is very rare, and then you’ll usually need to suggest a signing bonus or something of the sort to bridge the gap.

    I think your content is very well made, but I would like to see more stuff, where the other part is not as accomodating as they almost always are in your videoes, where the boss always get convinced by the good reasoning and everything is quite easy, ends well and overall is a very smooth proces. From my and countless others i know of both in real life and statistically, convos with your current, former og potential future boss often comes with alot more conflict than portrayed here, where they frankly do not care that you word things wisely etc - it could be intresting to see your take on what to do, when the boss is not at all willing to budge on something

    I once negotiated a raise-at-hire before starting a temp-to-hire job. I got hired.
    My husband once negotiated extra vacation days. His company did unilaterally change his contract to buy him out of them seven years later, but the $10k/vacation day they had to pay to induce him to stay made it possible for him to pay off his mortgage a few years early.
    Negotiating comes naturally when we remember that we need to provide for our entire family rather than only our current selves.

    But also remember that some companies HR has to approve any offer. I was waiting on a promotion. My boss was negotiating for me with HR and was able to get almost 10k more than HR gives for that position. This process took weeks to complete and if I would have tried to negotiate further. It would have been even longer and they wouldnt have came up any. So it all depends on the company

    I can see where this might work sometimes but having owned several businesses, you either get what I offer or its on to the next person for me. I will say this... I am all for giving raises as quick as 30 days. But I will never start someone for anything higher than our base pay.

    I always ask for the total comp package: pto, 401k match, benefits and bonus. Don’t focus on the salary first , focus on what’s coming out of your week and frequency. This way you have data to negotiate.

    Budgets exist. It doesn’t matter how qualified you are, how great your interview went, or even how badly the company needs to fill the position. And there are plenty of employers that will respond with “I’m sorry but I never indicated this was negotiable. Unfortunately we won’t be able to meet your salary request. Good luck finding a better fit.” Then they’ll offer number 2 on their list.
    Think long and hard about what your counter offer will be. You can talk your way out of a great job.

    That's a pretty typical sales tactic.
    Client: What's your hourly rate?
    Me: I prefer fixed fee projects, but if you would like to work on a T&M basis, the hourly rate is $185 per hour or fraction thereof.
    And then i just shut up. I dont say a word until they do. If they refuse to say anything, the next words out of my mouth are "Do you have any other questions?"

      @@Lumosnight Not always, of course. Sometimes things don't work out, or they find my rate is too high, which is okay. I don't begrudge anyone for making a decision based on financials.
      But I get enough jobs that I stay a little busier than I would like.
