If you're new to my channel, welcome, happy to have you here.
    Please read here before commenting!
    1. If you're in the comments to complain about the audio quality, I apologise to your ears! (Volume cannot be changed once a video is uploaded). This video is from three years ago, and since then I've worked on my video editing skills.
Hope you derive value and focus on what matters.
    2. Yes, you can negotiate as a fresh graduate. Give reasons why you’re worth more. Tie up how your internship or skills learnt at university are relevant to the job.
If I can do it, as a 21 year old in India, when the dot com bubble burst, with no internship, so can you!
    3. Don’t bother telling me this isn’t possible in your country (including India!) or industry. I won’t reply or read. I have negotiated multiple times in India, South America and Europe.
I have received literally thousands of messages and comments from folks around the world (including India) on how this video helped them negotiate anything from 10% up to 300% of their last earned salary. Don’t waste your energy on “why it won’t”, and focus on “how to.”
    4. I share my best career tips on email! Sign up for all things job search and careers: www.superchargeyourself.com/newsletter
    5. If you've read this far, I have a surprise for you! A 2021 video on salary negotiation, with a FREE PDF guide. Enjoy: th-cam.com/video/V9LK9p2mT6U/w-d-xo.html

is it possible to lose job in negotiations. You have cleared all your rounds and have appeared for negotiation. Now it's a pressure on HR to close this negotiation as soon as possible. What is your thought on this.

Anything is possible, which is why I gave tips including non verbal communication and politeness. I personally, in all my years of recruiting haven’t seen an offer rescinded because the candidate tried to negotiate.
Like I said: anything is possible and one needs to weigh the pros and cons.

I received a salary offer yesterday morning and the offer came as very matter of fact from a university, with the idea that was it: take it or leave it. I had watched your video and remember your acronym for fear. I have already retired once and was afraid that because of my age, I needed to accept the initial offer. However, I very politely thanked them for the offer and expressed my concern about the number and presented my case where the market average was higher. That same day they returned with an offer that was 10% more. You did that for me and I appreciate you so much.

Sonal, these tips are excellent and really worked. I was offered the upper range of their salary and I increased them by 15k above the upper range. They said they could bring up my base salary by 5k and give me 2k sign on bonus. I told them i really know my worth and the lowest i could take was 10k above original offer. they went back and discussed it, and finally I ended up getting 10k more as I requested. Thank you so much, this advice really works!

Hi Sonal, thank you so much for your tips and examples.
I went through 3 tough interviews and I was able to apply your tips during the salary negotiation. I basically mentioned my desired salary is $xx (5k higher than their range), they were pretty firm about their range, so I said "I understand this has to work for you as well, on that basis, the lowest I could accept is $xx (their highest point).
I ended up getting the offer with the highest point of that range.
I am very happy and grateful, originally I was desperate and willing to go for their lowest budget... !!

I did most of the things mentioned in the video in 2016 at an interview with a publishing giant where I was made to wait for over 2 hours after grueling hours of 4 successive interviews from team manager to CEO (all in the same day). When it came to salary negotiation, I was told to give in to whatever they were offering since it was a "brand" and would go a long way on my CV. While I agreed to that, I just could not do with zero increment on my previous salary despite the organization's name. I was told I'd be contacted but there was no communication from their end. I called a day later and was told that someone else was hired for lesser salary than I was being offered. That was a lone experience, but stands out to the day.

Im sorry this happened. Same thing happened to me 4 times (FOUR!!) where after the verbal offer and immediately after I start the negotiation process they decided to give the offer to someone who decided not to negotiate.
I understand how traumatizing this can be.. I'm a woman in tech and this makes me so traumatized to negotiate ever again. I even brought up how women are often times not paid competitive to their male counterparts in tech and that I'd like to get paid competitively, then had my offer rescinded right away.

    • @BigDaddyJinx
      @BigDaddyJinx ปีที่แล้ว +5

OP, look back on that as a good thing because what you just described is referred to as the "Imagine the exposure!" element. Highly visible companies will try to use this to keep their salary low when offered. They offer you this pittance, but they play up the "Think of the exposure!" element, and they do that with purpose. Just remember that exposure doesn't pay your bills...money does. Working for a "brand" can certainly have benefits down the road, but you don't want to look down the road...you want to be in the here and now. They offered the role to someone who fell for the "exposure" trick, so consider yourself lucky.
This is how they con people into unpaid internships too. The "exposure" principle. "Influencers" try this trick ALL THE TIME when they solicit brands and companies for free things and then tell them, "Think of the exposure! I have 100K followers on this and 75K on that!" much in the same way that these employers tell us.
You dodged a bullet. Never tell yourself anything different. You lost out on nothing.

I was polite the whole time and asked them in a requesting way.

Thanks for this video Sonal. I have been out in the job market after 9 years in the same company I had joined as a fresher. I saw this video after I accepted my first offer. It's almost 3 times my current salary and I was overwhelmed at first. Then I realised just how less I was actually making. Currently in negotiations with a second company, followed your tips throughout the process. They have effectively removed the personal component from the process, by making candidates create a profile on their portal and giving offer letters through that portal itself. My only contact is the 3rd party recruiter who was hired by the company to find a candidate. Still holding hope, since I am employing your tips of acting as if he is on my team.

It didnt change the course much as they mentioned they are giving the best they can already and put a final word on it. Yet i was amazed at the power that came with this video viewing. I asked for things that i wud have never imagined and got the confidence to push. The conversations helped me understand a lot about the company which wouldnt be known in a regular interview. Hence, i also recommend using these - sometimes the benefits could be quantitative sometimes qualitative

I have only had one company rescind a job offer, and it was after a month of back and fourth regarding intellectual property rights. HR team wanted to allow me to amend my contract to identify previous inventions as my ip, while the contract stated that everything I had worked on prior and during employment is their intellectual property. I even knew the CEO as I was in a joint discord group with him, and we'd speak often. When it got sent to their lawyer, they took personal offense and refused to make any changes, which forced them to rescind the offer.
In hindsight, this even being a problem was kind of insane, likely very uncommon situation.

Last week when I interviewed for this company through a consultancy the salary I was offered was less than what I was making at my previous job. And when I couldn't agree and asked for a salary that I should be getting, I was told I have high expectations and I wasn't considered for the job. I have another interview tomorrow and watching this video has boosted my confidence. Hope things go well ♥

There's nothing wrong with "high expectations" unless you can't justify those high expectations. Saying that you "deserve" more and then you're unable to justify WHY is a death knell. When I have been told that I have high expectations, I always hit them back with, "Which is line with the high expectations that you have for me and other candidates, so we seem to be on an even keel at that point, yes?" The gobsmacked look on their faces was worth every moment.
Only bear high expectations if you can justify them. If you simply say that you deserve it, that's not going to get you very far and is almost certainly going to see your resume get binned right after you walk out of the interview.

I have to say that here in Slovenia, a lot of times it is perceived that you are too focused on money or they remove offer if you try to negotiate. It depends a lot on country I would say. But still it is possible and the more we will do it, the more it will become a standard.

I just had my 8th round with a MD. He asked me what is the my expectations and told him I saw this salary range on Glassdoor for the same position for the same company. He became furious saying this is way above the expectations and that data is all wrong since all data is kept confidential. He became more rude even when I said that we can further discuss on this and I am willing to negotiate. But he said it's difficult, that they will call me back.
This was all very heartbreaking as this was the 8 round and I was not prepared for salary negotiations at this point, as I was under the impression that would be the last step with the HR. And before this all my 7 rounds were spot on.

If you are in the industry for more than 3 years and still facing this, I would suggest:
      1) It's okay to look at other industries or job roles
      2) If you don't change the game today, you'll have the same problem 5 years later, only it would feel 10x harder to change than it is today

This video is gem❤ In a recent negotiation, I faced a recruiter who seemed very determined on getting me onboarded for a package which was 5K Euros less than my MAN (Minimum Acceptance Number) in Germany. At first, she did not seem to be in the same team because I heard "Sorry, this is not possible" and other upfront decline to my polite attempt to negotiate at least 10 times, which was a little frustrating. But after the final negotiations, the Hiring Manager surprised me by adding a couple thousand euros to the annual compensation package that was agreed upon. It is tough to negotiate with some recruiters, but as you said, sticking to your ground makes every tough conversation worth it.

  • @Slackware1995

Yes, always be polite. Even if you don't accept the offer, you may deal with the person again down the road. I've had recruiters call me a few months later for other, higher compensated positions.
The biggest thing to remember about salary is that is what will be your base for years to come, unless things change (education or experience, for example).
Lets say that you accept an offer for $50k/year. If we assume a 5% per year pay raise, Starting year 4 you will be at $57,881/year.
But if you push for 10% more up front, or $55k/year then starting year 4 you will be at $63,669/year.
In year 4 you decide to get a new job. Your base salary expectation (current plus 10%) would be $70k/year (if you start the first job at $55k/year) or $63.7k/year (if you started first job at $50k/year).
I find it baffling how many people don't negotiate pay, whether it's your initial offer or an offered pay raise.
Even getting 5% more at start is like getting a pay raise, before you start working.
They don't realize that pay raises are an offer that you either accept or don't accept. Pay raises are compounded interest. Every dollar more now means many more dollars down the road.
Always counter offer pay raises! You will either get an amount more acceptable to you or know its time to look for a new job.
Remember that you are THE salesperson for you. You, your skills, and experience are on the market. Fight for what you are worth!
While it's true that other compensation can help "bridge the gap", they never fully replace salary because you salary increases with compounded interest.
Sure a $2000 sign on bonus and $3000 moving allowance "bridges the gap" between a $50k/year and $55k/year salary, starting year 2 and onwards you will be behind. Plus a moving allowence isn't compensation.
If a company offers to pay your share of medical insurance, I would count that as salary, assuming that it's for as long as you work for the company and the policy doesn't increase and the deductible doesn't go up. If your share would be $250/month that equates to $3,000/year. Plus you might not pay income taxes on that amount. It's likely that your share would go up by 10% or more a year. This us probably better than your salary pay raise.
If the company has matching 401k, then a bigger salary means a higher match. If the company matches 5%, at $50k/year that is $2500 vs $2750 with $55k/year.
I've seen companies offer different tiers on their 401k programs. This could be a higher match at higher salary tiers or less vesting time at higher salary tiers.
What salary you accept has a huge impact on you compensation many years down the road. I've even heard of people being promoted because their salary increased above the maximum allowed for their job title. One person told me that their annual salary increase that they negotiated caused such a promotion. Their new job title's minimum pay was about $2k/year more than they negotiated their pay raise at. In effect they got a double pay raise.
As a real life example. I had several years of medical issues that prevented me from working. When I was able to work I found myself in a horrible situation. I was not in my field for over 3 years, which meant that I couldn't get hired for a job equivalent to my 15+ years of experience. Nor could I get a job in a starter position because I was "over-qualified". No one would hire me in my field using one or both reasons. I even had responses of "over-qualified" for a mid-range position and "out of the market too long".
My wife convinced me to work in her field. At least my years of supervisory experience allowed me to start as a supervisor.
I quickly received promotions, finally getting a location manager position, the same level as my wife.
When my wife was hired by the company as a location manager she accepted their offer and always accepted the pay raise offers.
I fought for a higher starting salary and my pay raises. After 5 years my salary exceeded hers even though she had over 12 years more experience than I did and her location had significantly more sales.
That's how important your initial salary and pay raises are.

    • @Slackware1995
      @Slackware1995 ปีที่แล้ว

      ======================== part 3 =========================
I had a period of time where I explained to my new job that my job was to make the company more profitable ( or excel at supporting my customers if I had an inside support role. I defined my customers as the employees of the company. In other words, making the other employees more profitable.) In exchange I expected frequent pay raises.
6 months after being hired I would request a reasonable pay raise, usually in the 5-10% range. Some companies gave me the pay raise, others didn't. If I didn't get my pay raise I would look for new employment with a pay raise of over 10%.
For one company, when I requested my 6 month pay raise, they gave the standard "we do annual pay raises". A couple of weeks later, after I gave my 2 week notice a senior manager drove 150 miles to take me to lunch.
They wanted to know why I was leaving and if the company was not treating me well. I said "The company is great. You treat me well. This issue is salary compensation. I asked for a pay raise and was denied. Another company offered me a job with an 18% raise."
The next day the manager drove down and offered me a 23% pay raise and a large moving allowance as they wanted me to move 150 miles to work directly for that field office. Plus I got 4 weeks of paid leave in order to have time to pack up, move and find a new house.
What was amazing was that my original offer that I negotiated had a $3500 moving allowance that specifically said a maximum of 1 moving allowance every 2 years. Yet 7 months later I was given $5000 to move, plus up to 1 week hotel while looking for a house to rent.
If you are a valuable employee, then demand a reasonable compensation

    1) If I got one job offer and I resigned from my current company. While serving notice period, I am getting calls for job opportunities in other companies.
a)HR asks if I have any offer, in that case should I mention yes?
    b) If HR further asks about company name and CTC for the offer then is it fine to reveal those details or how to avoid it?
    2) Generally for job opportunities before scheduling interview, HR calls to get details about my experience, notice period, current and expected CTC. Should I reveal my current CTC before interview and mention expected CTC based on market value?
    Thanks

Very helpful tips mam. Its all mind game and self confidence. I just accepted an offer 1 month ago. It is my first job change after 7 years and my confidence was little low. However I got a 70% hike when I was expecting 50%. I tried negotiating to 100% but could not pressure my demand fearing to loose this offer 😝

Thanks for the question. I’m afraid I’m getting a lot of questions and due to lack of time can’t answer all of them individually.
You have two options: either ask me during me weekly live on LinkedIn and TH-cam (every Friday at 6:30 pm India) .. or join the supercharge club. Details are on my website.
      All the best

Thank you so much for your tips. I used them in my interview. Not only did I get a higher salary, I also got a sign-on bonus! It was my first time to ever negotiate a salary. Your advice got me what I wanted & it’s been a month in my new role ☺️☺️☺️

For quite some time TH-cam is suggesting this video to me. Don't know how it knows that I am planning to switch.
I just loved the way you explained. I never thought negotiating specially on salary is good but the way you explained, I can say just wow.
I have been in this industry for 19 years and changed my job once around 17 years ago. Thinking of changing now. The tips are really useful.
I just want to say everyone would love to have the communication skill like you.
People will definitely like listening you.

Excellent video. Well crafted with so many valuable points. Only thing I would add: If you are in the United States, ~40 states have passed state laws making it illegal for prospective employers to ask about your salary history during the interview process. The very goal was to promote equal pay among the workforce for the same or comparable jobs. If your state has passed such law making it illegal, you absolutely have the right to refuse to disclose your current salary. Otherwise, your prospective employer will simply give you a structure or multiplier based off your current salary, and then it will become 100x more difficult to negotiate. (ie. if you make 50K, they will give a firm number of 60K, and justify that you are making 20% more)

You are one of the most underrated career TH-camrs here. You are a hidden gem. I am taking notes from this video because tomorrow will be my job offer and I want to get as high a salary as possible since I know I'm worth every dollar. More power to your channel.
