DIY Milling Machine Build [Based on Bridgeport]. Part 1: Quill box and spindle assembly

- New project , new challenge!
I don't have any drillpress in my workshop, corded drill have huge limits. One day I decided to find machine that will fit to my needs. After months spent on searching I tought, Why only drillpress? Milling ability could be a nice thing. I felt in love in Bridgeport mills design. Those machines are almost impossible to buy in Poland in used condition. So why don't build simmilar by myself?
Couple hours in front of PC screen , moments of waiting for packs from China and here we are. New series starts just now!
Due to extremely high steel prices again I'm forced to use scrap steel, this causes some delay in build. I hope I will finish basic part in next two months.
Video is dark, I messed up with camera settings + poor workshop lighting . Next videos are brighter.
Respectfully disagree. Perhaps unintentionally, but your video grading turned out very cinematic and pleasing to the eye, IMHO
Normal😂
Amazing !! This guy’s drill press are his handheld drill, his body and shoes. His fetal mill becomes a temporary lathe to fabricate its own parts. His belt sander becomes a precision cutting tool. It seems to me he doesn’t even need the milling machine he is building. Incredible rogue fabrication. Respects, sir.
It is an unequal fight, the worst problem is the lack of a lathe, collet chuck is very limited with size of stock I can mount.
I'm trying my best :D
@@SteelCraft99 I hope my comment did not come across as anything other than the huge compliment it was meant to be.
I understood as you wanted , thanks for compliment!
@SteelCraft99 you crazy😂
He really build it all from scratch
I admire your mentality.. nicely done sir!!

You made the spindle sleeve or professional guy at the lathe?
Did you asked him to make it ultra precise ?
I mean if cylinder C330 is 70mm then sleeve also must be exactly 70 or slightly less or more?
Do you have the diagram for the sleeve with all the measurements ?
Spindle sleeve was made from my drawings in professional workshop. It was machined on lathe and then grinded to final dimension on shaft grinding machine.
Cylinder have a H7 tolerance and sleeve was also made in h7 tolerance. It just worked, they hadn't cylinder to match diameter. H7/h7 fitting for 70 mm diameter is from 0 in tightest form (exact 70 mm on both elements) to 0.06 [mm] in loosest form (69.97 on sleeve and 70.03 on cylinder).
I have technical drawing for the sleeve.
@@SteelCraft99 I will email you. Thanks for info.
I envy you your supply of "scrap" and raw materials. In my area in the US, scrapyards open to the public are few and far between, and I have to pay full price for almost anything useful. Very nice work!
It's not easy to find something on scrapyard due to very high prices of new steel. Price of scrap increased twice in this year, but still it's almost three time cheaper than new.
Thank you!
You'd only End up ! Being a ! THIEF !!! If you Did !
Yeah, from the meth and pain pill induced cleanup efforts coast to coast starting around 95 till about 5 yrs ago, you're lucky to find a piece of tin roofing material nowadays. Let alone anything worth working with to build something. And now there's no scrap yards hardly to take anything to where you might find something good since the price is so low they can't afford the fuel to run the equipment they use to process what they buy, so they close. Let a war pop off or some country that needs occupying for a decade or 3, and it'll be right back in full force tho. Nothing drives an economy like ours like war or having to occupy and police someone else's country. Americans just like America itself, blossoms and blooms like endless prairies of wildflowers brought back to life from the scorched earth just after a gentle rain. Sad but true, that we most thrive in the course of opposition and impending doom.
I know what you mean. I am actually thinking about casting most of the stuff out of scrap aluminum.
NICE!!! That tractor casting is such a nice useful part, you could do a lathe with it!!!!
A magnificent job, worthy of the best TH-cam mechanics Congratulations!
I'm glad to hear this compliment. Thank you!
Nice idea on using the cylinder for quill housing! I actually have a Massey Ferguson cylinder I could use for this purpose!
beautiful work. greetings from Argentina
dude ain't playin'... 😲 *respect!*
Does the quill rack and pinion have backlash? Is there a way to minimize the backlash if yes? did you salvage the rack and pinion from something else or was it purchased? thanks you, amazing build and amazing video series
Rack and pinion were bought new, they are mass produced universal parts. I think that only thing you can do with minimizing backlash in this case is to put some washer under rack to move it closer to pinion. I my milling head I have a lot of backlash on those keyways cut with anglegrinder. It's one of the things that needs improvement in this milling head.
@@SteelCraft99 thanks so much for the answer! :D
You have phenomenal fabrication skills. very innovative thinking to get the job done with what you have to work with. quill assembly looks great and the dial indicator verifies it is great. subscribed. all the best.
Thank you!
Very hard work that is well done. You will have a fine tool if you keep working and thinking like this!
Thank you sir!
Interesting. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week :)
Thank you! Check my channel from time to time for new episodes of this project ;)
Man, i am looking for homemade milling machine here on youtube for ages, but anything i found was somehow.. it's hard for me to believe that other homemade machines here really do what they was made for. Your idea and workmanship is briliant in my opinion. I will write you email, because i am curious about that custom made spindle sleeve.
what do you mean by Somehow !?? Then !
this is amazing, I would like to meet you...but I am in USA...wonderful job....thank you for showing us this.....Paul
Thanks for your comment!
You'd BETTER ! Stay in America !!

Can you tell me the "mod 2 spur gear" info and gear info?
How many tooths on gear etc? Or maybe some link where you bought this exact thing.
Does it matter how many tooths gear has or how precisely the gear runs on spur?
Teeth are size of module 2.
Bar with teeth is normalised and when it's module 2 it's outer size is 20x20 mm. You have to make it thinner to fit it into sleeve - tooth side also need to be rounded.
Gear is also module 2 - module of teeth have to be the same on both elements to match them. Number of teeth is 21. Inner hole is 12 mm, because it's raw blank for further machining.
You can reduce play between them almost to zero.
You can buy them in every store with automation parts, I can also send you links to polish store on email.
@@SteelCraft99 Thanks so much for replying. I appreciate that.
What you really need is a milling machine 😂. Great work buddy.
Witaj.
nice work, but, how you can do it without lights? congrats!!
Light is ok, It was failure of camera settings
@@solasauto
Good comparsion hahaha, especially s08e03 "Long night"
I failed with camera settings (previously I was recording forging , so I was set for very bright objects and forgot to change them. Also I have to add some lamps in my workshop and this is fact.
Thanks for your comment, check other videos. Update will apear soon! :D
I would like to know what you used for the spindle housing. I looks a lot like a short hydraulic cylinder or one massive brake cylinder. But I am not sure, so what was it?
This is hydraulic cylinder from URSUS C330 tractor.
@@SteelCraft99 Thank you, looks like I need to see what I can find on a John Deere to replace it
@@Jagdtyger2A So why don't you go to John Deere then !??
For God sakes dude, he put it on the screen right at the start of this video.
How springs work where another end lean?
Spring tensioning of bearings wasn't good idea. I changed that to thread and nuts in episode 16 of this series.
Why is the background so dark? I can hardly see what you're doing.
I'm so sorry, that was my fault with camera settings
What is the thickness of those steel plates that you drilled so nicely? Looks like 10 mm.
15 mm
Just SHIM !!
Very good work ! - You're just like me !! - Best of luck with all your projects mate - Enjoyed watching you ! 👍👍👍
Thanks! If you are interested check my other videos about this milling machine ;) - there are 15 episodes already :D
@@SteelCraft99 Will do mate - Great work so far ! 👌
What kind of corded drill are you using?
It's a cheap chinese made GRAPHITE 58G725. After 6 years still runs great.
Damm, great job!!!
Is that a bridgeport quill and spindle? Head looks good and it's nice that you can use the up and down action. Now you have to figure out how to lock the quill. Good job bro I'll be watching.
Quill is designed by me, Spindle is from z4132 (harbor freight mill/drill ) . Shorter than original one because I won't have a quill power feed synchronised with spindle.
The head is now finished check next videos ;)
Why are you so interested ! In Seeing That ! ?? Then !
Hi friend, it is a great job . Thanks for sharing. Questions please, where have you bought th housing quill?
Quill housing is just part of hydraulic lift from farm tractor. I bought it in shop with parts for farm machines. Ursus c330 model.
Nice build. How much You paid for this custom spindle sleeve?
Hello Steelcraft! Please can you answer my question? Where you get the Part for the frame/body of your Milling Head/ Spindle Cover from cast iron? I want also build a milling head like you. The Body and the y and z axis of my milling machine was an old shaping machine.
Hello
This cast iron part is a spare part for URSUS C330 farm tractor - hydraulic cylinder. I think you should find something simmilar to old models of tractors from your country without any problem.
Just Stick.to the Junk ! And you will Find it !! Coming ! Right at !! You !!
Ursus C330.
Is 200€ very expensive to make this SPINDLE SLEEVE by professional metal lathe guy?
This is just 1 company I asked about price.
Just curious about price.
I will make more requests for different companies and maybe home machinists.
I paid around 83 euro but it was more than 3 year ago so 200 euro nowadays seems legit price but I would wait other companies will say.

what bearings did you use?
7206 and 6206 P5 precision bearings in front of spindle and 7205 P5 on back.
Just SOME !! SCRAP !! BEARINGS !! LYIMG !! AROUND !! HALF BROKEN !!
What is the problem? David
Incredible build, amazing! thanks for posting.
Having a cheap drill press and vise would have made for a head start on making the slot in the head
Cheap drillpress was 1/3 price of finished machine head. Now I'm using this head as a drill press in making next parts of my DIY mill. You can see it in part 4 and 5 of this series
Top muito top.Sem palavras tamanha inteligência.

That's really savage bearing installation. Can't you at least find a rusty pipe that is the right size so you're not hammering on the shielding?
I didn't beat shielding of new bearings. I was hammering thru old sacrificial bearing on the inner ring of the bearing when installing on shaft and outer ring of bearing when installing on socket
Amazing
Thank you, I hope It will be amazing when I will finish whole machine 😅
Good👍👍👍👍☺🇲🇨
Thanks!
Have you ever considered some thing to Britten up your working area ? I don’t know maybe a Light !!!! 💡 just saying 😜
I did it ;) check next videos :P
It is very hard following your work in the dark bro,..
I improved lights in workshops, also camera was set incorrectly
It's just your EYES !.Decieve ! You !
Nice work on the spindle. The video is a bit too over-edited with color grading and stuff, little bit too dark.
You're awfully hard on all those drill bits and chamfers. I can tell they're of good quality. Letting them smoke is pretty tough on them though with all that heat. I know it takes a little more time to use coolant or a type of cutting oil but it does help the life of the tools. Just saying.
Every time I use oil when drilling, and this is what caused smoke.
Thanks for your comment
@@SteelCraft99 So why did you use ! Old Used Sump Oli ! Then !??
Thanks, this is in Poland
Great effort! Zero points for bearing installation.
Only bearing wasn't happy was one on spline sleeve and it needs replecament ;) Spindle bearing still works very quietly and smooth after 3 years

Stosowałes jakieś honowanie żeby to pasowało? Z czego pinola?
@@SteelCraft99 teraz to mi wszystko pasuje. Możesz zdradzić orientacyjny koszt wykonania pinoli?
Koło 350zł ze stali 40HM, materiał po stronie wykonawcy. Tak naprawdę zależy, kogo zapytasz o wykonanie.
👍👍👍
You need hole lot more light ,I can hardly see what your doing.
You're right. On camera display everything was looking good, when I copied data to computer I was shocked that everything is soo dark. But It's not just a playing a role in front of camera where you can repeat a lot of times if something is wrong, there is no chance to repair this type of mistake
No offence but you built a box for a quill and spindle to fit in. The quill and spindle were purchased and not made by yourself
That's right and it's still home build machine ;)
Quill is designed by me specially to fit into this hydraulic cylinder. Spindle is chinese. I want this machine to be not worse than imports ones.
Great project. Terrible lighting. It's difficult, if not impossible to see what is going on.
I improved lighting in my workshop, you can see the difference in the last video.
'Nice work

Very crude workmanship.
That's the point.
There is good base to further improvements
@@SteelCraft99 not necessary bro. Today you can do a lot of research before doing a project. You could have done a better job from the word go.
What would you suggest to change? I'm curious
Have you seen next two-three videos?
@@SteelCraft99 would like to see higher accuracy in your work. You are drilling location holes using a hand drill. That is a big no no in machine building.first you have to mark the holes accurately, use a centre punch to indicate the holes and then drill holes using a bench press to drill holes with the plate secured positively.
I mark wholes and center punch them before drilling It's necessary ;) I know a lot about machining and accuracy, I study machine building on university.
Then I didn't had a drill press. Cheap drill presses are useless. After finishing build of this milling head I bolted it to column and use it as drill press. I set squarness of spindle to table with dial indicator. I'm using it in making next elements of machine.

@@hectorrsilvestre9065 Yeah , in next episodes I improved lighting in workshop.
The lighting is so poor makes this video very bad
You are right. But further in series I installed new lights in workshop.
You’ve bought all the challenging parts, not home made. Show me you turning your spindle on a your lathe then I call it home made
I don't have lathe, don't have even drill press. I want it to be a real working machine, not just somthing that only scratch metal with lots of chatter. Spindle shaft is chinese you're right, I just bought it. Spindle sleeve is custom made from my drawings (again, I don't have a lathe). It's still a home made machine. Finding solution in ready to buy parts is a part of the fun.
That hand drilling wore me out just watching! You should of built a drill press first and used lots of cutting oil.
