Man I do kinda miss this background, What an incredible view!!! Just recently bought my first shimano and boy I am impressed!!! These things are worth every penny, As someone just making the step up from 50-90$ reels to 100-150$ reels, the difference is actually really amazing and worth every extra cent. Used to have all sorts of issues with the wind, threw the Shimano all day in 15+ mph winds with a frog and 50lb braid and didn't have a single backlash. I cannot wait to step up to the next level rods!!!
great video. I always explain the centrifugal breaking as spinning in a desk chair with your arms out vs your arms in, you will spin faster with arms tucked in. Same concept with the spool.
As usual, I can't see any points that got missed by Tim and Matt. I, finally, "went to school" to minimize any chance of back-lashing my bait-casters, after calculating how much down-time it costs me, not to mention the absolute frustration and even embarrassment. Everyone has a remedy for the common cold....and backlashes! So, I looked at a bunch of them online and feel that this presentation has given me the best info to improve upon my cast-control. Great job; very concise.
Thanks guys!! I'm a major shimano fan but I stuck to Lews low pro casting reels because the braking system was more self explanatory. Now I can grab a shimano and have an idea of what I'm doing!!! Great tips as usually gentleman!!
How to maintain your spinning and casting reels ... you guys have a lot of old stuff I try to lube and clean the reels but I don't open them up? And get inside cause I'll mess everything up
The best way I found is no spool tension and brakes at about 60% to 70%. You'll get the longest casting possible, better drag performance, and reduce backlashes. I won't set my reels any other way now. And I don't have to touch the spool tension knob at all. That's why Daiwa came out with the zero adjust spool tension baitcaster.
Same here I run all shimano curado and chronarchs 200E and I actually pull 2 breaks out and the rest in but I may have try the 1 out all in and see how it works. Next setup I want is a 300E for swimbaits and a dobyins fury swimbait Rod. Good vid!!!
the new intro is sick guys. my buddy was having the same problem the other day he tried to tell me there's no way to adjust the brakes on his calcutta lol
Good info, but the videos need to be edited as such to show the reels, hooks, or whatever you are talking about up close. Hard to know what you really mean when we can't see what is is you are doing to the lure, reel, etc. Thanks!
Can't agree more! These guys never had one single close up shot of the pins and gears they were talking about when they were talking about them! They might as well speak Spanish cause I don't know what they were talking about, all I know is their lips were moving and I can barely see that since the shots were all from a distance! And here I am thinking these guys can show me something so that I would feel confident about buying a baitcaster reel!
Casting from a small kayak is more difficult than standing and casting. Much more awkward and makes it easier to get a backlash for me. So I tried your advice and basically turn the spool tension to zero and my brakes to about 70%. Never got a backlash yesterday and my casts were longer than usual. Thanks.
I so wish I had watched this video first before I started casting my new Shimano Calcutta 400B today. The first three casts (Hudd 68 special) were all backlash and took about an hour to get out. lol After looking through the manual I engaged all six brakes, adjusted the tension knob and set the drag. Very little chance of backlash now. Over the next few days I'll start disengaging the brakes and tension knob until I get used to it. Any other helpful hints for throwing Hudds, Spro BBZ-1's, 3:16 Mission Lures, etc on the new Calcutta?
Ahhh bummer! Well at least you've seen it now. Hope it gets better for you! We have a video on how to cast swimbaits, you really need to watch that. It iwll save you a lot of pain and frustration.
Looking for some advice with my baitcaster, a Shimano Chronarch to be exact. I'm getting backlashes as the lure is in the air, not when it hits the water. Almost as if I need more brakes but that doesn't seem to help. I've adjusted to cast control knob to where the lure is barely falling and it still does it. Any insight?
mccurdymk2vw Learn to use your thumb. Light thumb pressure on spool through whole cast cycle. May take a little practice at first but pays off. Set your reel as you would for lure weight. Make cast and keep thumb in contact with spool throughout cast. Very light pressure, feel line pell off spool with your thumb.
I've gotten alot of practice in lately and have the hang of it now. I do use my thumb now and did some more fine tuning. I still get the occasional backlash but that's when I'm trying to flip it. Thanks for the reply
Great vid. Ive been using a baitcaster for my swimbaits (i dont go heavier than 6oz) and ive been having some backlash issues. How do you set your brakes for swimbaits on low profile reels?
its pretty much he same as any other lure bud. if you are backlashing, you need either more brakes, tension from the knob, or thumb it better. another thing I noticed is some baits that are les aerodynamic such as a spinnerbait or a really wide swimbait need more brakes than other, more aerodynamic lures. its all experience based knowledge.
tacticalbassin You guys have run out of ideas and making boring vids makes this channel less likely to get views. How bout you guys go catch fish, have fun and let us watch? No talking just run a good track over it. People want to see you catch fish more than anything. Those are the vids that get people asking the questions that lead to more video ideas. Don't let the silly name and pic blind you from the truth.I hope to see something fresh and fun. If not there are lots of fishing channels. Best wishes.
I've noticed that if I back off on the casting knob and the brakes. that if I really sling my cast hard it will back last and then in the middle of the cast clear up. and I think that hurts my cast. but if I just put a fluid cast with moderate power I get it a hole lot further and with less backslashes. just my 2 cents.
Your just asking for trouble with a loose spool tension knob it doesn't have to be real tight just enough so the lure falls and and spool doesn't over run too much.
hey guys! this is alittle unrelated, but I am really itching for a new species. ive been trying small river smallmouth and I went for the first time the other day: got skunked. do you have any tips for me? ive tried a jig and a small squarebill. thanks so much guys.
Sorry for the super slow response time. How'd it go? Have you caught them yet? River smallies will usually chomp a tube, squarebill, or even a little topwater like a popper.
I did not manage to catch any smallies but was able to get a few river largemouth. do you have any tips on where to find the fish? I have only seen them in the log pileups that happen in front of the bridge pilings but im certain that they cant all be in that one piece of cover. thanks guys
Ive been using low profile reels for a few years now and I personally love dual braking systems especially when throwing light lures. But if i had to choose one, id choose centrifugal brakes over magnetic. When i think i have magnetic set right then few casts later they arent. Just doesnt seem as consistent as centrifugal. And correct me if im wrong but ive always thought & heard that centrifugal controls the beginning and while lure is airborne and magnetic controls engage when lure hits the water. Is this wrong??? Just had better luck with both systems engaged a few clicks. Love my Lew's but the new 2017 Bass pro reels are serious. Carbonlite 2.0 and Titanium 8 are now part of my arsenal. Seriously HELP!! I cant stop buying fishing gear
Honestly Adam, we fish more than we tinker...I can't answer exactly how the breaking systems work LOL! I just know that they do their job :-p And we hear you on the sickness... we're constantly buying new toys!
When throwing big, heavy baits, do you still leave only one brake on? If I'm throwing something like a Punker or something in a similar weight class, I find I can throw the bait huge distances and rarely have to worry about backlashes, even when I throw with full force overhead, so I keep the reel set up with a fairly minimal brake profile as you describe. On the other hand, my experience with throwing huge, 6-12oz baits is that I never want to throw them 100 yards, that the harder I cast the more difficult it is to release the bait smoothly, and the more likely I will get backlash. Since the baits are so heavy and able to fly large distances with minimal effort, I guard against the possibility of backlash by using all the brakes, and it doesn't seem that I lose any distance. Is this sort of what you are suggesting when talking about having clients adjust their large, round reels?
Great points Randy. I honestly keep them adjusted loose for both applications I just don't chuck them as hard. For me its a "set it and forget it" mentality. But you're right with the giant baits, there's nothing you can really do to slow them down so there is no down side to tightening up a bit.
only if you want a birds nest. if its the old (not this years) model that has the internal 1-6 brake and the outer 1-10 mag adj. try this. mag on 0 brake on 0 then adjust tension till it falls steady. depending on what you are throwing (flouro, mono, braid) will be where you set the brake. braid is forgiving, mono is avg , and flouro is not forgiving so to make it simple start on 6 then put the mag to 5 or 6. cast 1 or 2 times.. back the brake off 1 click (5) then repeat till you feel comfortable and arent getting line slap. then you can very very very lightly loosen the tension knob till you get the desired smooth cast and reel feeling. once youre used to this it literally takes a cast or 2 to set up. that old 10 bearing escalade hd was a decent reel for the money. no offense to these guys but their way will cause issues for 95% of low profile baitcast users. they can do it this way because they have perfected it. its what they like.
Hey Matt how about doing a fishing tidal water video? That would be awesome the delta can throw alot of people for a loop. Great job on the videos keep it up!!
The big debate. Shimano v Abu v Daiwa. My first baitcaster was a revo SX, never cleaned, still works great after thousands of casts. Like mentioned, if setup properly you can cast farther with less energy
Haahaa reel techs LOL, Good video guys, The Big bait Round Calcutta D's have to be taken apart that way using a tool (screwdriver) but the Calcutta B's and TE's have the VBS just like the Low Pro Curado's and are my favorite and go to's. Don't forget on the Calcutta D's when you're changing the brakes to oil your internal spool bearings, you'll really extend your casts then too. I found it funny that I too, always loosen my spool tension until I hear that slight "clunk" sound on the side to side movement of the spool. Definitely allows for minimal resistance and max casting. Good stuff boys have a good one.
Matt mentioned adjusting a reel to allow a bait to make a better vertical fall, like beside a bridge piling. I'd really like to see a video on that technique with both baitcastnig and spinning gear. Specifically, how can you let a bait free fall and effectively set the hook without back lashing or missing the fish? Do you just try to clamp down hard enough with your thumb, on a casting reel, or what? Thanks for all the great videos.
Skip to 4:24 I fish Abu ALL DAY EVERY DAY!! REVO S I can throw a mile and smooth like butter! Rods are another story one broke within a week of buying!
I watched this to help me adjust my wife's favorite Baitcaster reel. I'll take a spinning reel any day. All day fishing without any problems while my wife sits in the boat suffering from backlash that leads to backtalk.
Sorry guys, I love most of your videos but you blew this one. You just told people to put a Bose radio in their car and turn it off and listen to a transistor radio on the seat. This was supposed to be for the beginner can you just made it so that the beginner may never use a baitcaster again. Use what the real has to offer that's how they have improved for the average person. After they learn how to use their thumb then they can start adjusting it as you stated. Sorry for the negative, but I would never teach someone this way.
Lesson to learn for everyone, Daiwa for soft baits/spinners/whopper ploppers, rest for small to large. Daiwas aren't good for smalls since im guessing its primarily for bass
what? Daiwa doesnt use the same braking system on all their reel. the SV reels and 103/105 series are great for lifgt fishing. The SS Ait, T3 Air are Great for BFS

Hi Matt nice info but what is the star drag wheel for if lose ND to much the spool don't turn why

AWESOME!! That's what we like to hear!
I use Quantum reels an I've never seen brakes inside, just sum magnets. So I just adjust with the magnetic lever. Is this the rite way?
Look at the guy flippin the docks behind haha

my diawa lexa 300 is so hard to cast small baits so I bought the Abu Garcia black Max and love it I might buy a revo now
I've heard good things about that little black max. You'll LOVE the Revo
+tacticalbassin going to purchase this week. the black Max ain't bad at all but I always fear burning out while pulling in 10+ lb striped bass
I had a first generation black max ambassador 5 BB 6.2:1 one of the best reel I've ever used
MR-FLIP I've beat a revo SX for years without cleaning or lube. Still casts great. There are specialty light bait reels out there.
Have ya'll made a video on approaching new lakes?
Keep an eye out. Matt just finished spending a day breaking down a lake he'd never been on. Video coming soon...
I like my reels set loose and thumb as needed. My idea for a video is boat set up and maybe touching on how you both acquired your first bass boat.
Lame.
Thanks Dan! I think a boat setup video could be good, there is a lot that goes into that. Great idea!

when setting the brakes...can you set uneven or does it have to be even number of brakes set

You're absolutely right on the distance when backlashing
I use lews reels....I've tried loose settings like this it don't work for me I have to have my brake a tension set to pretty much max tension
Brakes and tension - two separate things
Your just asking for trouble with a loose spool tension knob it doesn't have to be real tight just enough so the lure falls and and spool doesn't over run too much.

Ha! I read that somewhere
that'd be funny if that dude caught a big one on those docks behind you haha
