2018 Ford Raptor F-150 HONEST REVIEW After 90 Days of Driving It...

  • Let's take a ride in my new 2018 Ford Raptor F-150 and talk about my impressions after 90 days of driving it around town and on a pretty long 8 hour road trip. I like to review all of the vehicles I own to give a different perspective than your average car reviews from magazines or youtube channels that only have the car for a day or two. I've had this truck now for almost 4 months now, and I give it to you straight, the good, bad and the ugly. Hoping to help that person deciding if they want to spend $60k to $70k on a truck and not just hear all of the fluffy good stuff but want to also know anything not so good about that huge investment.
    Enjoy!!!

      Ace Rollin yea I didn’t mean to make a bash video but I saw ZERO videos that helped explain to people any points of concern with the truck. It’s still best truck in its class but it’s designed for off-road racing so...

    I own a 2018 Raptor SuperCrew and have owned a 2012 and 2010 before this. I drive a 2014 F-150 for work and have to say the Raptor is not as "smooth" over small bumps but it's much more planted and controlled than a standard F-150. I live in the middle of nowhere and spend a lot of time on crappy gravel road highways so my road time is a little different than most. I would never trade the standard suspension over the Raptor's and the difference is huge every time I switch trucks.
    I've had some seat time in a buddy's new Ram 1500 with the air suspension and I felt it was less controlled and predictable than both a standard F-150 and the Raptor. Not to mention all the issues he's had in cold weather with the air suspension.
    All in all love my new truck and feel they improved on almost every issue I had with the previous gen. Seems like you raise a lot of valid points but they're certainly specific to your tastes and the way you use your truck.

    1. The wheels come over inflated from the factor. Lower the recommended psi.
    2.the suspension is set up to do more than one thing. Hauling a load, towing a trailer and going off road. Kinda hard to be a master at all three.

    • @pahwraith
      @pahwraith 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The payload is only 1000lbs. Every other f150 trim is at least 2000. Some are close to 3000.
      It's not gonna tow anything too heavy very safely, unfortunately.

  • @robmarchand7421
    @robmarchand7421 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You are 100% correct in the suspension. I ordered a 2018 Raptor without a test drive (they didn’t have one available). I found one a couple weeks later at another dealer and drove it. The ride was jittery and not smooth at all. It’s not good for an everyday driver. Thanks for the REAL review.

    • @WillMotivation
      @WillMotivation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for honest comment. I still like the Raptor and think it’s a great truck but gotta keep it real. The ride is stiffer than a lot of sports cars

  • @johnnykp30
    @johnnykp30 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the jumping around is mainly due to overinflated tires. The tires on my Raptor were over 47 psi, and I experienced the jumping around. Once I adjusted the tires to about 38 psi, I immediately felt a better ride.

  • @tonymission
    @tonymission 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think this is pretty spot on. I've had the 2018 Raptor for about three weeks. I do drive in sport mode so don't really feel the lag and don't have to deal with the start/stop thing. Suspension is a little rough, but my toys are a GT3 RS (very rough/raw) and a lowered 964 coupe on KW coilovers. I like raw and road feedback versus the luxury feel of something like a 911 Turbo S. To me, this Raptor is much smoother than those vehicles. I'm in love with the Raptor, but don't think this dude isn't giving a fair review. Seems fair to me from my experience.

    The ride is smooth. It just gets rear wheel hop. Specially on turns. It’s got a solid rear axle bro that has about 18 inches of travel if i remember correctly. It’s a just what you get for have a suspension that can handle jumping high in the air.

  • @ARKnapp1970
    @ARKnapp1970 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Will, after a test drive I agree about the ride. Having said that you came from a Ram which has air suspension. They are the smoothest riding trucks out there. It's hard to compare the Ram to anything else regarding the ride. You were destined to find the Raptor to be a rougher ride compared to your Ram. Thanks for reading and I hope you continue to enjoy your Raptor!

    You can jump two wires in the back of the auto-start disable switch so it disables it permanently, best "mod" I did to the F150. Our XLT (after 53k miles) rides smooth and quiet, we call it the limo.

    Hey there, Motivation. Running turbos takes extra care than n/a engines. Keeping the injectors and turbos healthy will keep you loving the acceleration. My 17 f150 xlt has much softer suspension sitting on 18s, so I don't experience the same roughness. Also, use your driving modes to your advantage. If you prefer, run in sport or street mode. No start/stop. Eco mode is just that, like grandpa driving to lodge mode. I tow and haul with mine, so tow/haul mode utilizes the injectors and transfer case to take advantage of torque. My 3.5l tt produces 470 tq/375 hp at 2500 and 5200 respectively. I only use 1/2 fuel pedal when haters get jumpy or I need to get past the wolf pack on interstates. Rarely do I use full pedal to the floor. From an f150 guy to another, happy trucking.

    I've owned both a 2011 Ford SVT Raptor and now I currently have a 2017 Raptor. Both were Super Crew cabs. I can tell you this, 2017 is much smoother than the 2011. 2011 came with 2.5 Fox Bypass and the 2017 comes with 3.0 Fox Bypass shocks.
    As far as the "bump" your talking about yes...at speed the truck is 500lbs lighter than the 2011 and the rear really wants to kick out on you. Upgrade the rear shocks and springs and the problem is corrected as mentioned. I upgraded my rear with 3.5's and Deaver Springs.
    Agree with braking. I miss the rumble of the V8. No lag in Sport mode for me.
    Tundra's are great trucks. I also had a 2006 and 2013. Good Review. I love mine for the record but I'd much rather have the Mercedes 6x6.
    Good honest Review!!!

  • @blueline_raptor
    @blueline_raptor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think your review is fair. If you have ridden in vehicles with serious Off road suspension set ups they can be a bit harsh on the road. Bumpy street ride and body roll. I thought the truck provided a good balance off great Off Road ability with a very streetable everyday ride. Not Cadillac, but definitely tolerable (test drives). I hear Deaver rear leaf spings help a ton with the rear suspension ride and hoppiness. A little weight in the bed along with an air presure adjustment should help as well. I come from Sports car/ import back ground. My 2003 EVO is great on track, but really not the greatest daily driver. Even stock, the ride can be harsh and no CC sucks on longer trips. I am used to turbo lag and I thought the Raptor was pretty responsive for a turbo platform. But.... I love it for what it is and will proably keep it for a very long time. My raptor will be here in a month or so we'll see what it's like to live with.
    Thanks for your review. Thanks for being positive.

      For looks, and features I’d say the raptor. For ride quality and instant torque and sound, ram. So for me, I like the ram because it would be so much cheaper to buy and I am getting older and much less fond of super stiff riding vehicles.

    I’ve got a 2020 and I agree with you on the weird side to side flexing it seems to do when you hit a nice bump at speed. I came from a Dodge 2500 diesel so I thought the ride was fantastic but I was used to a firmer suspension for towing. I also agree that the brakes could be a little better in terms of stopping or short distance panic stopping capabilities. It’s definitely a bad ass truck but you are right, it’s not the be all end all of high performance. I love mine but it does have its faults. Great review bud.

    Yeah you're not wrong on the suspension. SUre it's better then most older trucks but a lot of trucks now have great suspensions. I have a lifted 2015 and can tell ya the factory setup was a lot better before I lifted it... it's not bad but it's not great. It's a truck afterall, it's designed to handle the abuse so it's not designed to let the baby sleep on the way to get the groceries. It's a fun truck but it does have a trade off

    I special ordered a 2017 Ford F-150 4X4 XLT SE Sport with max tow package and 157 “ wheelbase. It is the best riding truck or vehicle, for that matter, that I have ever driven. I dream of owing a Raptor, but settled for an after market Raptor style grill.

  • @davidmayfield2313
    @davidmayfield2313 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fox shocks are fully adjustable including rebound. I would also play around with your tire pressure. The new Bfg AT KO2’s are stiffer than the previous Bfg KO’s. I would also like to add that the spring rate for the Raptor is designed for towing in mind as well as being an off-road vehicle. If you’re looking to tow with your truck. Factory springs are the best option. But if you’re like me? I would replace them with Dever springs. A progressive leaf pack will make your truck drive like a Cadillac on or off-road. Ibach is my choice for the front. I hope this helps with your suspension problem.

    Agree with your comments on the suspension. It's very jittery. Best way to replicate the feeling is an expansion joint in an on or off ramp. Any speed while turning and hitting a bump and the truck does a little shimmy underneath you. Very unsettling. My previous F-250 did the same thing.

      The raptor comes stock with 10 ply BFG Ko2 off road tires. The minimum for 35inch tires like that is 45psi. The dealership puts them at 50psi. If you run 32-36 psi on 35 inch KO2 your car will feel sluggish and your turning ability will be so bad because the tires arent suppose to be that soft.

    One thing that's important with the suspension is you need to choose the correct setting for where you drive. If you have it in an off road setting on the highway, it's gonna ride hard. Someone pointed out to me about braking performance is less related to the brakes and more the tires are more suited for off road use. If you drive mostly on road, a more street friendly tire will give a better ride and better braking as well.

    Will, I have a new F-150 with the FX4 package and every time I drive people around their very first comment is how smooth the truck drives. I have a friend who has a Lexus and he said my truck drives as smooth as his Lexus especially over bumps.
    Have you checked the tire presser? Is it possible you have the tires aired to the Max? I'm shocked to hear that the ride quality is rough especially as its meant to take bumps... it's built to Baja. :)

That said, I did buy a 2018 F-150 stx. A- it was half the price, and B- it is my daily driver mostly on the street. I knew pretty much most of the points you made as far as how the truck would react, or perform as a daily driver compared to a highly capable off road vehicle. I love my truck! Hey Will, i came from a 2017 Limited, glad i saw your video as i thought it was just me being OCD. I know what you mean about the truck bouncing around when hitting a bump going fast, ive almost lost it a couple times driving on the interstate winding fast with traffic and i was like wtf?!
    My Limited def drove much smoother than this one, this truck is much stiffer and you def feel the bumps, kind of annoying but it looks great. Reminds me of my dating women, the better they look they more issues they have :) Either way, bad ass truck, i like mine alot, paid almost 80K for it from a dealer here in Florida.

    • @WillMotivation
      @WillMotivation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. I think when you pay that kind of money you deserve to be a bit OCD. But my biggest reason for talking about the suspension was because all the reviews I was seeing were talking like the suspension was super smooth so I felt the reviews could be a bit misleading and buyers need to know the good and not so good. And Yep it’s still the top dawg truck!

      Off road if you mean high speed off road, but for other things there are trucks that can do better in certain area's. For instance, if I was a rock crawler (not that I would buy a brand new truck and go scratch it on rocks) I would go with the Power Wagon. To the best of my knowledge it is the better truck for that type of things. Since I do neither rock crawling or high speed desert runs, I am more then happy with my F-150 FX4, Honestly the most off roading I have done is across my yard. I probably would have been better served with a regular F-150, but at the time I didn't know any better.

      highjix fx4 is actually a waste of money. You could save that 995 dollars you pay to put tougher skid plates and bettee fox shocks for about the same price. 🤷 Thats what i did. RCI skid plates make the fx4 ones look like thin aluminum can.

    I have a 2018 f 150 4x4 with the fx4 package and can agree with your comments. I feel every bump on the road. Especially when the tires are hot on a real hot day. Sometimes i wish i had bought a regular 4x4 so it wouldn't be so bumpy.

    I decided to go with a Gen 1 2014 35,000 miles. It’s mint...and I put a shit ton of aftermarket goodies on it... I thought about the pros and cons and decided that I could get a better truck... less money for the stock truck, and the price difference between the Gen 2 and Gen1 allowed for many upgrades ... lol. I agree with you on the smooth issue...Trucks are gonna be rough...compared to a car.. ..

    I drive an F-150 FX4 daily with a 5.0 and it rides very smooth, I also own a 17 Raptor and it rides so much tighter. There is a little bounce, but nothing compared coming from my 15 F-250. My only complaint and this across both of the F-150's I have the braking sucks. They need to upgrade the brakes.

    Hey Will, I'm repeating tlh235, tire pressure made all the difference in ride quality with my Lexus GX460 SUV. Three or four psi below the door jam recommendation made all the difference, remember as the tire heats up while driving, the psi will increase. Try it for three or four days and see if that makes your Raptor ride better.

    I owned a 2014 Supercrew Raptor and I discovered you need to keep the tire pressures exactly what the label on the door says! I kept my tire pressure at 32PSI. Also you will find it important to rotate your tires every 5000 miles! If you don’t you will notice cupping on the front tires. Otherwise I thought it was a very good riding truck that my my wife and I throughly enjoyed. In 2 years I dorove it almost 70K miles and had no problems.

    I own a 2016 F150 Lariat 3.5 ecoboost and a 2017 Raptor drove it 11 months put 38k miles on it traded it in for a 2018 Raptor and now have 9400 mile on it in 3 months . Yes I drive a lot on and off road. So I have tons of saddle time! I own a SCUBA diving company and haul tanks and gear almost daily in both trucks. Now if you want the smooth riding truck your complaining the Raptor is not then you need to get the Lariat. It drives and rides like a luxury car. Now for the Raptor, it’s bad ass all around... it’s not designed to be on the pavement 24/7 but with the 35in tires and super 4x4 build it rides better then any 4x4 I have ever owned on the road. I can make hands free calls with no issues of cab noise or road noise from the tires. People that ride in the back comment that it is the smoothest truck they have ever ridden in. As for the turbo lag you talked about there are 6 mode settings as I’m sure you know. The “SPEED” mode will reduce that lag to very little, and the toe haul button will yield the same results. Any “redneck”😂 with a 4x4 truck with big tires and suspension knows you don’t drive without some kind of weight in the bed of the truck... it’s a truck it’s meant to be working every mile of its life. And designed to ride best while hauling something. 100-200lbs at least, the Raptor a little more. These videos of people driving around the city streets giving reviews about a truck built to run the BAJA....Makes me 😂😂😂 I do agree the auto shut off is annoying! You really need to go to the Raptor school to learn how to use what you really have. I do like your other videos, but this one I think you missed the boat.

    I went to order one and got a feeling. Turned around and bought a 2017 Z71 6.2 and put a 4" BDS fox coilover kit on it immediately. No more tire hop and rode like stock. Did 120 miles down PINS and ate the new 2017 Raptors up!! I was shocked. They were walking all over the beach and getting beat to death at 45mph and I was at 60mph with my 6 year old sleeping in her car seat and sodas in the cup holders! 😆 So glad I walked and did it myself. Plus my interior kills the raptors.

  • @TiredInsomnia
    @TiredInsomnia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was looking at buying the New Raptor. Even though I probably wouldn't take it off-road a lot. I thought the Fox suspension would make the truck also ride smoothe on the road as well as on the trail. Is it really just about bringing down the tire pressure to 36-38 psi? Then the truck will run smoothe?

    I’m a salesman at ford, that auto start/stop button has to be disengaged every time you get in the truck. It’s that way because of some regulations. Also, the suspension is gonna be rougher then say a platinum. It has off road suspension, I think that where people get that saying “it drives smooth”for off-road suspension. That truck is meant to go off roading. From your review if you ever sell the truck drive the platinum f-150, I believe you will like more. You could even throw a lift or level kit on there. Can’t go wrong with those massaging seats, tho.

    • @RWT2777

      Completely false. The REAL reason the consumer is tied to start/stop as a "feature" is because the manufacturers NEED to implement it so they can show they are "making gains" on fuel economy. There's no such "regulation" requiring them to have this shit. That's bullshit and as a salesman you have no freaking clue what you're talking about. You sell this shit because you're told to - you have nothing to do with the engineering of it, nor the economics of it. I absolutely hate when sales people pontificate like they know their shit, when in fact all they understand is how marginally market things to people so they take it.
      Here, this is an EXCELLENT summary on what that shit is all about (and the guy is funny as hell explaining it; bonus points for the Australian accent): goo.gl/qvXABj
      Also, you CAN disengage & remove it PERMANENTLY so it doesn't return when you shut your vehicle off. Here, I'll show you were to find it: goo.gl/ZXqitV but you will need to purchase this: goo.gl/VSJIfK and download FORSCAN: www.forscan.org/
      Oh, and YOU'RE WELCOME!

    • @MrRikkiRocket
      @MrRikkiRocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gallagur Like you and Will I also don't think auto/start/stop saves much gas - but we are all just basing that on a feeling right? We have no evidence that it doesn't save gas - right? You would have to have someone follow you around in the same exact vehicle with it turned on and see if they get better gas mileage.

      This is a stupid feature that we can't normally turn off. One work around is putting a trailer hitch tester in the spot on the bumper. It's not too big so it'll depend on personal preference. But if your truck thinks it's pulling something, it won't shut the engine off.
