    Man GTRs are so cool! Those price tags are a bummer tho! I wish there was more support for the VQ40. With all the Frontiers, older Parthfinders, and NV vans they came in those things are all over junk yards. They could be the poor man's VR38. The VQ40 has 166mm rods and a 1.81 ratio with stout mains, just open decks... Compared to the VQ35 it's got 22mm longer rods, 11mm more stroke, 2mm thicker journal on the big end and 10mm larger main journals so they freaking added overlap with stroke! I don't know how their head geometry compares but the bottom end is all potential.

    Always impressed with your knowledge, and always learning from your videos! Didn't they show on engine masters how the mushroom shaped intake filter made the most power? A little surprised you are using the 'standard' performance intake filter cone shape that doesn't allow air straight in through the end, but makes it all bend 90 degrees. (Just because normally you are on the cutting edge of every technology and pushing everything to maximum performance).

    • @motoiq
      @motoiq  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not necessarily true. Mushroom filters have little surface area, usually have poor filtering media that lets all sorts of dirt past them, and not enough standoff for laminar flow into the induction tube.

      @@boppernostopper8598 Your local group guys are wrong. There are 4 grades of Eagle rods, we used the extreme duty ones with the CA 625 bolts and special proprietary alloy which are much stronger than the base rods. These will take way more than 500 hp. Even the standard H-Beam 4340 Eagle rods with the ARP 2000 bolts can take up to 900 hp on your typical 4 cylinder. Eagle lower-grade rods are I-Beam and Eagle doesn't even make these in Subaru applications.

      We experienced a huge drop in fuel economy because now the car actually feels fast and we punch it everywhere! The fuel economy is really bad on E85. The best mileage we now get is something like 20 mpg on gas and 14 or less mpg on E85. We also retuned the transmission shift scheduling to get rid of the annoying early upshifts and super aggressive light throttle upshifts. This helps driveability but probably also hurts mileage.

      it has some advantages over top to bottom flow like better charge cooling and more effective use of the entire core not just biased toward the inlet like most top to bottoms without shaped end tanks, some of the disadvantages are somewhat uneven cooling flow to the different cores which we fixed with a baffle and slightly more pressure drop due to skin drag of the longer core channels. However pressure drop is minimal and much better than stock.

      In monitoring the IAT's in this car, the variation is small and the temps are lower due to longer heat exchangers. If I was making above 1400 hp I would probably do something else but up to 1100 I would rather do this way. Also less obstruction in airflow to the radiators which is important for track driving. This is backed by data and testing.

    @Soravia 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, dude here just cheated. He claimed all that 650 HP by "Bolt On". The real power upgrade here is purified E85. (not the E85-50 from pumps). All other upgrades don't add as much as E85.

    • @motoiq
      @motoiq  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Stock on 91 octane pump gas the car made 421 whp and 419 lb\ft of torque. With mods, on 91 octane pump gas the car makes 583 whp and 600 lb/ft of torque. On a tank full of mostly pump E85 the car made 656 whp and 645 lb/ft of torque. The car would have made more but we were tuning to keep the torque below 650 lb/ft which is the most the stock bottom end can take with reliably. So E85 made 73 more hp. On pump gas, the mods made 162 whp. The mods made almost 3x the power of the switch to E85. So the switching to E85 doesn't make more power than the rest of the mods, not even close.

      Sure it is with a stock bottom end and transmission if you want any sort of reliability from it. Sure some TH-cam "tuners" will get more and we can get more from bolt ons but then things will start to break unless you car is just a garage and dyno queen.

      @@motoiq dude I have a 1500 whp gtr…I know what it takes. Upgraded turbos + fbo at 800-850 whp is extremely reliable and 1000s of people run that set up. Any real gtr tuner knows this as a fact. As long as the torque stays under 650 torque. Stop spreading misinformation. In fact 850 whp is so reliable shops give warranties out for this type of set up.

      @@motoiq I see you guys do tons of different cars every week/month so maybe you don’t truly understand the vr38 but us in the community deep and build fast drag gtrs 24/7 know that 850 is safe 900 is when you start to push if

      Our engine holds the torque to 645 and that's the horsepower we developed, we could make more if we ran more boost at higher rpm but we are on stock turbos so there is not a ton left there. We were holding the torque at 645 and thus the power level was what it was since torque and power are interrelated. So if we upgraded the turbos, we might make more top-end power, as the torque would fall off less past the torque peak but we are currently also against the octane limits of the fuel, having less backpressure may improve the ability to hold boost at higher rpm due to less reversion due to better turbine flow but why push the stock bottom end so hard, especially when the ethanol content of pump E85 varies so much. Also, there is a difference between street reliable, 1/4 mile reliable, and what you can take to shift sector and run a mile on or a 20-30 min track session. We fix VR's that pushed street tunes too far. As far as misinformation the guys who tune the car and advise what the limits should be are Mitch Mckee and John Carburry, Mitch was the head tuner at AMS and the head development engineer for the GT-R at Cobb before starting M-Engineering and John was well known in the open source world as well as one of the top development engineers at Cobb. You can google them. They tuned the car and it was done for reliability under track conditions not to make internet and youtube bragging numbers. I would like to see how long a torque limited 850 whp stock bottom end and transmission car lasts on a track day on a road course. I would not do that on my car or recommend a customer do it.

      @motoiq  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We know the VR pretty well and we are just conservative on what we recomend. Our customer base is also different, hardly any of them drag race, it's mostly track day kind of people and the cars have to be able to hold together for 20-30 minutes of hard driving that might require 30 seconds at continuous WOT and WOT for many shorter periods during just one lap. Big difference between that and 9-10 seconds of WOT. If you hold the torque to 650 lb feet the stock bottom end can hold for awhile but it's not good to pound it hard all the time. The other thing to consider is that the ethanol content of pump E85 varies a lot, especially in our area. You run the car hard and have a batch of so so E85 something bad can and will happen. We set up stuff to be reliable not, for youtube or internet bragging numbers.
