    Despite the beauty of a 'new' 1963 Coltrane recording - that goes without saying - the best thing about this track just might be the chance to hear Jimmy Garrison play an arco solo, followed by a chorus of him walking with Elvin Jones before Trane restates the Theme.

    • @samferguson9171
      @samferguson9171 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      ghairraigh Totally. The arco solo is very cool. It’s the most Paul Chambers-sounding thing I’ve ever heard from Garrison. And then when Elvin comes back in and they swing out! Talk about groove.

    • @ghairraigh
      @ghairraigh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have always loved the sound of Arco - especially Paul Chambers with the Red Garland Trio. I admire all the great arco players like Mingus, Ron Carter (but you have to hunt for examples), and Jiri "George" Mraz. Christian McBride stands out among the 'younger' guys. Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen is a particular favorite of mine at this seemingly lost art.

    Wow what a great tune. My mother is a fan of jazz and turned me onto smooth jazz, free jazz, traditional jazz. I had heard her playing jazz in her van when i was younger and always opted to listen to classic rock instead which is another genre of music she loves. In 2013 i decided to listen to some John Coltrane and Miles Davis alone in my room without distractions and loved it upon first listen by myself. I started buying every MIles Davis and John Coltrane CD and record that i enjoyed listening too and now have quite the collection. I like some of the tunes on this album and will be picking up this album on CD and vinyl record for sure.

      Alexander Forslund That doesn't mean we shouldn't be open-minded. Coming to appreciate jazz or classical music can be very good for you, it can be a real education and I like to think that some gaga fans will now see jazz as something enjoyable. Music is timeless and should not be confined to certain eras in my opinion.

    Philip Ocasio A Happy Birthday to one of the great innovators of Jazz, who would grasped both the inner and outer spiritual realm of creativity on the saxophone. An amazing musician, see his documentary on NetFlix or TH-cam. Who wasn't influenced by the genius of John Coltrane? I thought Coltrane was a complete nut, basket case when I first heard Giant Steps, and yet, even though he had passed when I began my journey playing the tenor sax in 1968. At 66 yrs young, I still enjoy playing at home along with so many of his music CD's, which include Giant Steps, A Love Supreme, Crescent, Transition, Meditation, Coltrane and Hartman, and many others...RIP... John and thank you for taking me along that vastness of your musical universe. Now I hear and experience these recordings and again find myself in awe of the ingredients in this lost recorded music, along with the visualization of what positively went on in your mind as you created the sound through your sax, is nothing short of amazing. 🎶🎷🎼

    It is wonderful to hear a new Coltrane piece, even if it is quite conventional in structure. This is 12 bar blues with a jazz rhythm. I prefer Coltrane's more conventional pieces, so I am very happy with this.

    Pure JOY of the art by the players, NEW kind of SWING modern (for '63) mods, in and with characteristic Coltrane dignified deliberation. Progressive ditty, very timely for the era, Some serious Coltrane condensed in a pop top can for the automat generation, yet thoughtful. Just long enough in duration to fit a 45. What might have been?

    I haven't been this happy over a "New Record" in many years. I'm amazed this(most of this) stayed on a shelf for 55 years. This Quartet and Miles Davis 2nd Great Quintet are my favorite working bands of the 60's. Some of these tunes were recorded again Nature boy in 65' on 'John Coltrane Quartet Plays'. At least 2 of the Impressions were released on a bonus CD of at the time unreleased material, for Coltrane's first Quartet Recording with ¡Impulse! 'COLTRANE'. Plus the untitled original is much better sounding recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Olé is a good album but would've been great in Englewood Cliffs New Jersey.

    • @jeanhodgson8623
      @jeanhodgson8623 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said. Many's the time I have wished that Trane's Atlantic material had been recorded by Rudy. The Ertegun brothers were nice people, but their studio engineering was bad. The top end, especially, is muffled. Elvin's cymbals sound as if he was stuck inside a cardboard box, with the mike(s) outside the box. Drummers shouldn't be isolated behind baffles. Rudy and the Columbia guys recorded with the drums out in the open. A particular regret is the October, 1960 sessions, that produced so much excellent material. The "Olé" album, recorded at the same time as Trane's first Impulse album, is a great album, but the contrast between Atlantic's sound and Rudy's is really stark here. Trane was delighted to work with Rudy again, and, now, in the new Englewood Cliffs studio. All the Prestige recordings (ending in December 1958) were done at the Hackensack house.
