The "smoke ring" that gets blown in your face is lit to look like flames, and it's one of the cooler effects I've seen. Not expecting it at all, the ride stops, and then the skull shouts something angry (presumably in Japanese?) and then a huge fireball is coming right at your face and by the time you realize it's *not* actually fire, it's already hit you. I really nice little surprise effect that I wish imagineering would steal for other rides.
DisneySea is the best. Highly recommend it to anyone who is ever in Tokyo. It really is the best Disney park in the world. Don't skip the Chandu Tail, the black pepper popcorn, or the frozen beer!

This is the only version I experienced. The opening is beautiful. They add water elements on the entering room with starry sky above. It’s a peaceful atmosphere until the crystal skull screams. And the queue has a lot of decoration space. The line is just a Z shape in a large room. Hearing the hollow echoes in the temple and bones lying on the bottom of the queue. If you don’t look, you’ll miss it.

The only downside i can think of is the responsiveness of the air pistons. Air can compress and expand, unlike hydraulic fluid. The air pistons still make the ride great, but it has a cushier feel with less abrupt jolts and slower response than the hydraulic rams. Not a deal breaker, but definitely noticeable, as for anything replacing hydraulic systems, such as LIMs replacing hydraulic motors on launched rollercoasters

Got to ride the DisneySea version the other week during my first trip to Japan. The queue had a lot of my love (though not having Sallah talking about Rough And Rugged Terrain was missed) and it was immediately apparent what things just worked BETTER but aside from the differences in maintenance quality I feel like Indy is the one ride that most holds up equally across both parks.
Edit to clarify: everything at Tokyo Disney is at this level; I think our American Indy is the one that gets closest to that Tokyo Disney quality level.

The best version was the early year versions of the Cali Indiana Jones ride, back when the randomized rooms were functional and everything else was working (esp. the icemaker fall and the Cobra's venom squirter that usually wet the middle row). But after they shut off some of those features, the Tokyo Indiana Jones ride comes out on top more for the maintained quality of the effects and physical details (esp. the vortex). The only issue I had with the Tokyo version was the occasional desync between audio and ride.

Personally I love the Tokyo version. Having ridden the original in its hayday when it still had all the traps active and the massive line was entirely out of control, This version was better in just about every way. At no time does it feel like it has elements half done. The only missing step is having Sallah do the video. Other than that, most everything at Tokyo Disney has a bit on Disneyland/World. Only thing that it doesn't have is their tower of terror. It has a neat story, and its very lovingly cared for. But the ride is slow, short and not thrilling.

at disney sea this is one of the best rides they have -- unfortunately most of the other rides seem to be smaller version... they also went for more immersive walkaround attractions to fill the space rather than actual rides. They claim to have 30 attractions but in that list are things like ariels playground, the venice boats, the railroad etc. If they had some bigger rides it would be awesome. They also need bigger restaurant spaces as there's never enough space. They also need more disney theming -- it was built by the oriental land company, hence the mascot Duffy, but to me this is why it feels more like a generic themepark with some disney rides.

I'd disagree with you, yeah. Obviously it is not really themed overtly on Disney, but I don't think the main theme is even the "Sea", despite that being integral to Japan. The real theme is the outside world before the Meiji Restoration, with a pulp and steampunk flavour, which is why Jules Verne and Indiana Jones suit it so well. This period is of particular significance to the Japanese I think. The cohesion is unmatched really, to give a singular experience. I also think the Soarin' version is the epitome of Walt's think it, create it, make it philosophy. The Cali version preshow is about the development of mechanical flight whereas Disneysea's is about the human dream of flight since the ancients. Its preshow adds the most to any ride in my experience. I was genuinely moved by the end. But to each their own
