LOL I have been playing with clear resin coatings on paintings for a while so I understand how long I have got to play with it. I do feel for you though I have had those hot sticky moments as well. I sort of have a plan before I start and most of the time stick with it. The more you play with it the more comfortable you will become. Hang in there. 👍

I alternate brands of resin. While I am practising I use the Platinum from DIY composites and when I am happy with the colour and composition i use the more expensive resin from JustResin. I use about 120mls for the small ones and 240mls for the bigger ones with some wastage because of the need to mix the mica's properly and you don't need very much of the mica mix. I work on about 30mins of working time but that depends as much on your environment as it does the resin. I think the key is to be a bit organised and have a plan. 😄
Thank you for the names of your Epoxies, as well as your measurements. I counted... You had 4 different Mica Powders, plus
black and clear. That was really a lot of mixing!!!! I'm going to watch, and watch your example until I can see it happening with my eyes shut. What a lovely pattern.
I've been a lot of research on Epoxies so I know that there is only a small window of time to get it all done. I'm going to get my husband to help. He really is my most awesome half.

+Momzilla It was a bit of a panic in the beginning until you find your mojo. I stay quite small and I try to have most things lined up. I level the canvases first and it becomes easier once you know how your resin reacts. I also think that the first round of pieces are educational. I happens quick but you learn from the experiences and sometimes they work out great. I started taping myself so I could watch back and see what I did and see what worked and what didn't. Have fun with it.

Question - what substrate are you working on? It looks like standard stretched canvas. I find that canvas settles in the middle from the weight of the resin so all of the colors pool to the middle, so I only use wood panel. Thanks.
These are small stretched canvas. Because I stay small the sag is very small, I like learning so I use quite a few different boards and canvases,

I have not had any cracking with house paint when used as a priming coat.
Beautiful!!! Can you tell me what resin you are using, and how it stays workable for so long? Mine nearly hardens in the cup after 5 minutes! Also, where do you get your mica please? TFS
The resins I use are epoxy resins that have a working time of between 20-40 mins depending on the weather. 5 mins sounds like a polyurathane resin. I get my micas from ebay (colorperk). I love micas so I have a lot of different colours. 🤗
Hi chris, great work thank you for your videos. I have just started working with resin mainly on tiles but even tho the level says tiles are straight and i go over the edges I notice that as the resin is drying it appears to come away from the sides. Any ideas as to why this happens?
where in Oz are you?
If you are additing heat to your work it will thin and run more and as it cures it contracts slightly. A way to stop this is to tape up the sides to dam the resin a bit. I generally use higher viscosity resins that dont flow as fast or far.

Chris, I just started watching you last night and have already created a beautiful piece with your techniques. I'd love to send you a picture of it. How can I do that? Just a quick question. It's minutia, really, but why do you wear two pairs of gloves? Thank you for sharing your skills.
I think you can send me a message through youtube, i started using two gloves because i have small hands and the gloves i like were two big. The small gloves irritate my skin so i out them iver the nicer gloves. It ended up being less messy when i could take the outer glove off and use the clean hand for the torch etc.
my second question will be on a large paint with the short time you have until the epoxy starts to harden can you continue after the first cote has dried up? and if i want my resing to be very fluid what will you use to thing the mixture down? thank you for your time!
Claudia This is one of those times when its important you get the right resin for the job. You want a low viscosity resin and you need to work quickly to a plan. Make sure you have the right environment with ventilation and use a respirator. I don't do large pieces so I am probably not the right person to guide you.
Claudia Manokian you can warm your resin in a sink with water, while it's still in the containers. You will need a resin with a long work time, I would look at art resin. The resin has I believe a 45 minute work window. You don't want to add anything else to the resin other than the hardener, the resin won't cure properly

The epoxy resin I use has a working time of about 20-30 mins. If you leave it all in the mixing cup it starts to get warm very quickly. I spread most of it out to slow it down.

Yes these ones are on small canvases. I also use MDF and melamine board for the larger pieces.

dear Chris i have been following your videos here with growing enthusiasm.....! your are so inspiring! i have a question or 2 for you: i have had a very scary experiment with mixing epoxy, very short time after putting the 2 ingredients together the mix got warmer and warmer and even fume came out of it! have you had ever encountered such an experience? i hade this a+b epoxy made by a lab especially for me and he dosent know what happens to the epoxy may be you've heard of such thing?
Without knowing what resin you are using it is difficult to say. Some things to consider, were your containers clean, did any moisture come into contact with the resin you were mixing, sometimes if you add too much paint or dye it can happen and lastly try and use resin that gives you 20-30 mins of working time.

I am new to this . What is the alcohol for that you add to the cups? What does it do to the resin ?
When you add the mica to the clear resin you are thickening the mix up. The Alcohol thins it back down just a bit.

Why do you add alcohol?
The Mica is thickening the resin mix and the alcohol thins it back to a better consistency. It also allows the different densities of the mixes to create the lacing you see over the other resin.
You do elegant work but you mentioned different kinds of resin. Could you name some you've used. The one you are using in this video
there are polyeste, epoxy, UV cured and I am sure there are more. I only use epoxy resin for these. The 1:1 resin is thicker than 2:1. Have a look at the brands that are local to you and you will see on their directions for mixing to give you a guide.
Maybe a silver would look nice

A. 100% Solids or
B. Water-based..
I'm trying to figure out which one I can mix with Acrylic Paints? I don't want to make a mistake when I buy epoxy here in Canada.

I had a wonderful weekend 😄 Resin is not waterbased and I found it takes a bit of trial and error to see if the brand of acrylic paint you have will work. Paints with a high water content will just froth and ruin your resin. Art styled resin (normally mixed 1:1 is thick and glossy so the hairdryer struggles to move it. The resin I use for these is a thinner more liquid resin labled as tabletop or something similar and with require a 2:1 mix of part A:B. I started with small bottles of different brands just to discover the one I liked. It might be more expensive at the beginning but I call that the price of education. 👍
Hmm? 100% Solids epoxy resin works with Acrylic Paint --- as long as it is low in water content!
So I should be able to mix a tube of Professional Artist - Golden Paint with this 100% solids epoxy...
It is just very thick, and can't be watered down accept by 91% Alcohol?
Have you ever mixed a acrylic paint with a Medium first, and then mixed into Epoxy?
If so, how well did it cure?

+Momzilla I have some of those Golden Acrylics and they are great paints. You only need a tiny amount as they are so highly pigmented. The alcohol is used to thin the resin so the mix will work for you.
LOL, I need to mix enough acrylic paint for 2 Quarts (2+Litres) of Tabletop Resin for my initial surface coat!
I am looking to make the base coat solid black. My resin is a 1:1. I guess the hair dryer is out of the question. Dang!!!!
+Momzilla I would do a test run with something a bit smaller. LOL Your hairdryer might be strong enough to move it once the resin has heated up. So I would torch it, being careful around the mica and then the hairdryer once it is already moving. You still will only need small amounts of you highly pigmented paint.
How do I keep the bright colors in a resin pour that I start with
Its a fine line between keeping the colours together and moving them too much and spreading them wide. Try less heating and moving.

The white powder is called pearl white mica powder. You mix in with resin to make the shimmery white. Same as the gold only white.

The Black is a local brand of acrylic paint called global.

The mica colours are Dark Blue, Lustre Blue and violet pearl. 😄

My first lot was bought through a local nail salon but now I buy them from ebay. There are a few chinese sites that sell the same ones. You can also look at your local soap or candle making supply shops or sites.

Carla the first lot I got from a local nail salon and the majority of them I bought on ebay (china). If you google mica for soap/candle making or nail art the colour range is fabulous.

That colour has been so tricky to use. It does not get as much use as it should.

Chris Cross there is for cosmetics and there is for soap candles so what kind do you use? How many ounces in each plastic bag? I think color perk has no item to sell in Ebay because I just checked. Can you give me a link to where I can buy it please? Thanks
what strength of isopropyl alcohol?
This is labelled as 99% but I have used 91% with no apparent difference.
