    Bradley first of all I want to thank you so much for sharing your knowledge about resin. This video was the most information I have had and the willing to try this type of painting which I love . You are so generous with your time and wisdom I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated. This is one person who you gave inspiration to and I just might do this thing. Thank you so much again Bradley you saved me so much time and money with your tips and tricks. Happy painting to you.

      You are right about the number of videos out there but the ones I watch seem to assume I know things I don't. I am older (64) to be starting this so maybe it is just your teaching style, but after watching this video I knew I had to watch your others - lol. I was very disappointed. I hope you do consider some tutorial style videos but regardless, thanks for giving me that extra encouragement I needed.

      This is the most informative video I ever watched! Clear, direct to the point!! I’ve been using torch, did know i have to be careful about “catching fire” but i never knew about carbon monoxide poison!! I’ve been using indoors and just yesterday I had a headache and felt so tired .. didn’t realize that was the reason... I thought I hadn’t slept enough , and the headache was because I didn’t eat!! Now it all connects , was right after the torch! Thank you so much , so glad I found you!🙏🙏

    "When propane burns it creates Carbon Monoxide," so you wear a resperator mask? Hate to tell you, but unless your mask has a forced air supply from outside, those things will do squat to protect you from CO. They also won't do a thing to protect you from the fumes of the resin. Both of those masks have particle filtration and neither one provides gas filtration. I'm all for safety, but you should have lead with ventalation because your masks are fashion accessories in that application.
    Other than that, this is the best resin painting primer I've seen. Everythign else I've seen are just videos of people painting and chatting without much content about tools, thought behind technique, and in 15 mins they have a "finished work of art" that is just a random pour anyone with thumbs can make. I've never seen one showing your techniques of using a silicone dam or texturing the board before the pour. Genius.

      @jeffreyjohnston7162 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RamDragon's Art Studio Absolutely true and very important information. I hope everyone reads your post. The mask and respirator are strictly for blocking particulates. They do nothing to protect from fumes and carbon monoxide.

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use a few different brands depending on what I am doing. Art Resin is by far really good to work with, I use it for most of my commission work. It's expensive but worth it. General work, I use F.E.W. Products resin EX-74. It's less expensive and very workable. For tables and counters I use ULTRA Clear Epoxy by bar&table top epoxy. All the big chain restaurants use them and I see why, it's a commercial grade epoxy. Few Products has EX-88 for table tops, which is good too! My website has all my favorite links too!

    Thanks for the tips. Working my way up from acrylic pouring to resin. If you have 1/4 inch MDF and put a frame on the back about 2" in from the edge (for a floating effect) will it still warp? Want to then just paint the frame black. Do you evern mix in acohol to get ride of bubbles? THanks

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn't warp! I only use chemicals to create effects but bubble reduction is a side benefit. Denatured Alcohol, paint thinner, Acetone in small amounts seem to work. Experiments are important!

      @bradleydonaldsonart382  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's possible but not sure how it would look. You would need to really thin the paint. Best to do a small experiment and decide if you like!

    Awesome video! Thanks! Can you tell me how long u allow your art to dry before pouring resin?

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean a second coat? You can pour another coat in as early as 4 hours! If you mean over an acrylic or oil painting...after you seal it and the seal coat is dry. Thick acrylic or oil paint may dissolve a bit if not properly sealed. Email me if you need more of a discussion, link on my website.

  • @donnamartinez8543
    @donnamartinez8543 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If I need to thin out resin as is necessary with certain paints, what do recommend you using. I see some people use acetone and others use alcohol, and some water. What is your recommendation. Also, have you used silicone for cells, is there a problem with indentations, and if applying a second final clear coat, do those fill in. Thanks!

    Bless you! I found one video, watched it and was confused one would have to know a little bit more 1. about art in general 2. about the type of art and 3. a bit about resins and such to learn from this lady.
    I am a fairly gifted parrot and mimic; I don't have to know about the play of light and extraneous things; I want to know how to do it- I am auto didactic and will find out later the WHY, show and tell HOW and be succinct, my mind despises wading through extranea and I WILL learn later WHY - it's probably common sense anyway-or I will see/understand as I go. I can't help but... I know myself, it's my nature- Brain's always ON. Many other things I won't do unless I know why, but my creativity must burst forth and I am not patient enough to read labels, books sit in a class, or such when I see a way of expression and then ideas form, i want to be able to do it right now. It's urgent.
    You know, itsa jump in, I'll swim later kinda deal! I found out something about myself to wit, if it is sink or swim, I will swim.

    Great tutorial! What do you use for gluing the hanging board onto the mdf? How much weight can that Support? Thanks for all your information.

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use a carpenter grade wood glue, I don't know the rating off hand but that MDF doesn't weigh much more than a few pounds so has never been an issue. I pretty much make framed panels now and so d-rings and wire on the majority of them. MDF was good in the early days when I made this video but now my paintings are very refined and it allows me to ask a higher price when they go to gallery or festivals.

    Great video!! I am about to start using resin. I have seen some People adding the color to the resin before painting and some People add resin when the painting have dried. What is the difference?

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of ways to do things that's for sure. Mixing paint in the resin allows the different paints to interact and blend (or not). Not sure about why someone would paint on top of dried resin? You can paint something then pour clear resin over the top, is that what you mean? You should email me more details to emailbradleyart@gmail.com

    Loved your video! Thanks for sharing all this information. Have you tried another resin?
    All I can find here is crystal resin (so it is called). This resin is not A and B equal parts, but resin + catalyst.
    Again, thanks for sharing.

    Lots of great information! Thank you. Couldn't quite understand what you were saying when you were describing the 1/2 inch board. India board or something?

      MDF is a composite material...I am now exclusively using 5mm underlayment from HomeDepot now, light and strong!

    Bradley....Thank you for this wonderful step by step tutorial. The PVC cover you made, is that 1in piping? BTW...I was able to save my plastic measuring cups. After the resin drys, it just pulls out in one piece. Ariel

      @bradleydonaldsonart382  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I used smallest to keep it light. Since I made the video I have attached the PVC to my work bench and now hinge it up and down. Will do another video soon and demonstrate. Yes resin will dry and come out of the cups...I use acetone too to clean them out. But after time they get nasty! Thanks for feedback. Bradley

    Hello and thank you for sharing your knowledge. Do you use spray paints and if not, why?

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, you can use spray paint, both in the resin or spray lightly on top... I like mixing it most. Metallic spray paint is my favorite choice. Just spray in a plastic cup then add resin. Have fun!

    Your vid is the most informative I've seen so far however you missed the last step, clean up. How do you clean up your tools and containers used on the resin?

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you liked, thank you! You can use acetone if you don't mind a powerful chemical. After using a measuring container a few times and cleaning with acetone, I toss them if they get too bad. I like to keep my paintings clean and free of debris.

    What about the archival issues using these boards as the base for this type of work?Are there long term permanence considerations?What would be the life of pieces done this way?How do these piesces react to different types of light and display tecniques over the years?Thank You.

    • @bradleydonaldsonart382
      @bradleydonaldsonart382  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had any issues with MDF from an archival standpoint. I have also switched to 5 MM wood as a base now, I can buy it in bulk and cut to size now that I have fully equipped my studio with woodworking tools! I still make all my panels. As far as the effect of light on a piece, I think it really depends on the brand of resin you are using. "Yellowing" can occur if left in strong daylight for a long period of time with a lot of the brands. Read the labels!! I use the BEST brand I can get when using resin on a painting with a lot of white in it! Same with tables, I use the best commercial brand. Not all resins are alike!!! Check my website for my list of vendors.

    Hey Bradley - thanks for the great informative video! I got one question: How do you mix the Golden High Flow acrylics in there? When i tried doing that, it completely failed and made a big mess..

      Kaspar Flück If I may, pour your epoxy/resin mix into a cup and add 1 small drop of high flow. Stir. If afterward you feel you need another drop then add another. Stir. Only add 1 small drop at a time. Most problems that occur happen because too much paint is added to the epoxy/resin mix.You want to use the least amount of paint (dye, powder etc.) as possible to get the color and transparency you need. Some people will recommend keeping your colorant to 10% or less. I say keep it as low as possible and that's usually 5% or even far less! If you find that you need 10% or more then you need to be reaccessing your choice in colorant. You are probably using craft or student quality colorant which is made of fillers and very little pigment. You would be looking for professional AKA "Artist" quality paint, inks, dyes, mica etc. because artist grade materials contain a much higher concentration of pigment load with limited fillers or preservatives.
      Golden only makes Artist quality products all of which are fantastic. I personally own and use every product they make, lol. This is about the highest quality of commercially available acrylic paint (and other products as well) you can get. Next to home/hand made there is nothing better. For example, it takes about 15 coats of Liquitex BASICS to every 1 coat of Golden. Either 1 of a few things are happening here. Either you are using too much, your working area is either too hot or too cold (which the epoxy/resin mix is temperature sensitive) or the product has gone bad which it can do if it's been exposed to extreme weather, improperly stored or has simply sat on the shelf too long. It happens. Oh...and that last one goes for your epoxy/resin and Golden products. Hope this helps. Happy Painting!
