  • Easy fly fishing for trout with a washing line leader method, showing how to set up a washing line with 2 easy droppers & how to make the leader knots required to attach the trout flies that you will be fishing.
The orange fly line is for demo purpose only, so that you can see the knot connection being tied.
This washing line method is Ideal for stillwater trout waters when fishing buzzer flies and for dry fly fishing on small to medium depth rivers.
When fishing a trout river you have just dry flies on the leader. i.e beetles, spiders etc no floating booby required.

Made my leader this way today, big difference in turnover from just adding onto the tippet.

Both ways are easy, it's just I like doing my multiple fly set ups this way.

I just cannot get surgeon's knots to work reliably, they just snap in my hands half the time. I wet them, and tighten them very carefully like everyone says and it seems to make little difference. I've tried a few brands of fluoro, fulling mill, airflo etc and it doesn't seem to make any difference, any advice on where I might be going wrong? Or am I just incapable of getting a decent spool of leader?

Hi Alan I use them all the time, basic 7-8lb line as tippet . A 3 looped knot and gently seat the knot pulling each end slowly. I use all kinds of make of line, so that should not make a difference. Al do one as a video this weekend.

pretty sure the easier way is just make a loop half the length you want the dropper, bit more simple to be honest

2 knots and the time of construction I think would be the same, 30-40 seconds it takes me to make one of these. Thanks for the feedback Al try it.
Update: Just tried your dropper loop method and cut one end of the loop to make the required dropper length, but when I pulled the end of the 9 inch dropper the knot gave way. That was on a 4 turn dropper loop as well.

How can you use control 18ft of leader? It’s impossible

    • @mdflyfishinguk5220

Not at all, flies are at 0 to 12ft then 6ft of line to rod tip, that's why it's called the washing line (long) seen some people knock out 20ft leaders, roll cast it off the water then false cast it out. This is with the flies at 6ft apart, you can go shorter my minimum is about 12ft with 2 flies point and 1 dropper 4ft apart.

Hello there folks, I’m james. I’ve fished Farmoor reservoir in Oxford since I was 9 years old. And I’m now 31. It’s a hard venue to learn from, but stuck at it and prevailed. Fishing buzzers in the spring on a team of 3-4 is nothing uncommon up there. I’m used to casting 25 foot leaders which may sound crazy. The trick to long leaders that I learnt is perform a few over exaggerated roll casts to get the leader and some fly line out roughly straight, before you start casting properly. A little power to get the flies off the surface, then the rest is easy. It takes a little practice but not impossible. The main thing is that distance is not the case most of the time, getting a decent turnover at a shorter length will result in more fish. The straighter the line and leader, the more likely you will feel a take if the fish take on the drop. I recommend a 10ft 7-8wt for this kind of leader length. I hope my advice helps you in your quest for more great sport. And to the chap demonstrating this video, this is a very good hack that I have not seen before, a very easy method I will try myself. Thanks for the great tip. And most importantly…. Tight lines everybody!!!!!!!!!’ :)

Cheers for the input Jim, I've seen people do a 20ft leader with a single fritz egg and it works. Regards MD
