There was something pretty major that did not get your attention. If you take them both apart you will see some major differences. The Sage 5 has full length steel liners under both scales for strength. The Native 5 is just FRN on both sides. Also Sage has two washers on the pivot, and steel outside of those. The Native is one washer on the pivot, and again just FRN outside of those. I give you the black/red wins on color and made in USA means something. But everything else goes to the Sage. Thx for the video. Keep it up.

Those scales and extra bits make the Sage more complicated to disassemble and reassemble for cleaning and lubrication though. My Native has no additional washers and the pivot does not require adjustment (like dragonfly for example). Just tightens to snug and it's good to go.

Full steel liners and bronze washers make this an EASY win for the Sage 5 LW

@@CPoston420I used to think that but I now love the liner less native 5. The FRN is so strong the metal liners don’t mean much.

@@nickallen8333 yea i agree there's no issue with stability on the Native 5. don't really need liners, would prefer a lower weight. Like what rigid tasks would you ever do with a 7,4 cm long blade anyway?

@@Hallo81398 Exactly. I can’t think of a task that would break the native lw aside from heavy prying which is dumb. The thing is a tank and honestly one of my favorite Spyderco’s.

Great review. I like that you also evaluate a lot of grips and the different kinds of cutting and using the edge and edge shape.

I picked up a spearmint Sage 5 lightweight last year that I absolutely love. It has some of the best out-of-the-box action of any knife I own. Buttery smooth. The FRN scales feel very sturdy and tough. They don’t feel cheap and plasticky.

I've been debating these two for awhile. Your summary is about where I'm at. The Native 5 seems like a better knife from a pure usage standpoint. Better overall design, ergonomics. I love that it's build in the US. The Sage 5 looks so damn good though and I love the features: I love the pocket clip and have one on the Chaparral, I love that compression lock, I love that it sits much farther down in the pocket. Might have to get both.

They are similar in handle & blade size. Both have fingers choils & both are similar in thickness behind the edge. Personally, I prefer the back lock between these two knives. Although I’d take the frame lock of the discontinued Sage 2 over both of these locks.

If I remember correctly - I think the story with the native design is it was intended to be sold in big box stores. In an attempt to appeal to a broader market, they eliminated the “hump” on the spine typical of the delica/endura & military/paramilitary design families.
As far as the hotspots from the edge of the finger choil, I use the edge of ceramic sharpener to take the bite out of edges like that. I also knock down the edges of the native handle, but I use a set of sanding films that I have leftover from building models and rc cars.

I really like my Sage5 and the wire clip works well however if I am wearing a hip length jacket with an elastic bottom I will put the Sage in my pocket instead of clipping to my pocket. One winter day I went for a half hour walk. I was wearing jeans so the pants were fairly thick material and I had on a jacket. About halfway through the walk I heard something hit the pavement. I turned around and there on the ground was my week old Sage5. Somehow the elastic on the jacket (not tight) worked at the knife and eventually pulled it up enough for the knife to fall out. I would have been so pissed if I lost it. So I don't completely trust the wire clip.

That native has a better colorway but imo the sage 5 is the best looking spyderco and that's saying something because spyderco knives aren't the best looking. But I've only gravitated towards the sage 5 lw specifically, because I think it looks better than the sage 5 cf

Just curious, do you ever have any problems with the Spyderco wire pocket clip being kind of wobbly? Like it’s not super sturdy where the screw is?

    • @itsaknifestyle8482
      @itsaknifestyle8482  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes it is a pretty flexible clip due to how thin it is. For me it’s not an actual “wiggle”, it’s a flex back and forth. I hope this makes sense but the wire clip doesn’t bother me at the end of the day. Thanks for watching

Did you happen to have a chance to try the Native 5 in G10? I am looking at this model and can’t decide whether the extra price would be justified for a little smoother action and possibly a bot more robust feel of the G10.

    • @itsaknifestyle8482

I haven’t tried it before. It seems like it would be a good option, but the only thing that concerns me is that there isn’t hardly any chamfering around the edges. I assume it’s like my native chief, and the ergos on that aren’t bad, but the lightweight version has a chamfer going all the way around
