100% agree with you. Would love to see Spyderco listen to the customers and give the Native 5 the compression lock. There is already a slip joint version - so why not ?
Man I love both of these, although I recently gave my sage5 away to a friend. Perfect edc knives in my opinion, but there is just something awesome about the backlock on the native that makes it feel so solid, and the noise. Great review
Great review! Very much agree with all you have to say on the comparison. I would get a set of Parsons Bladeworks scales for the Sage 5. Changes that knife the same way the AWT does on the Native 5.
The Native 5 Salt was my first Spyderco and my first good folder. It’s one I regret selling now. If they made one with a compression lock I’d buy another in a heartbeat- especially if I could get it in LC200N again.
Native 5 with a compression lock would be in my trousers daily. Love my Cruwear PM2 but the aesthetic of the Native 5 just speaks to me 👍 Beautiful lines on that knife Thanks for the comparison
Spyderco does make a fantastic back lock! The position of the lock halfway up instead of towards the back end of the knife makes a huge difference in my opinion. Sweet video Dood
Nice vid! Il hope they never chance the lock of the native. The lock back is so insanely strong. Did alot of stupid …. with it and it stil going strong. 🙌
The new AWT Aggressive Agent contoured scales for the Sage 5 are amazing and you’ll love them. Great comparison video between two great knives. I love both these models and the Sage 5 is underrated.
My newer pm2 in s90v (earlier this year) came super rock solid with drop shut /free swining action out of box . It was my first pm2 so I never tried the older ones but came with solid action out of the box . Had some lock stick that worked out but the action / lock up was money
Spyderco makes the best backlocks and these are 2 knives you must own period. If u can get a sage 1 cf or sage 2 tho sheww. Id like a sage 4 back lock to try haha.
Is that the brick red color from AWT? I’d go with the Native 5 too and also think Spyderco lockbacks are great. They’re fairly similar, but I wouldn’t describe the Native 5 as a smaller Shaman since it’s closer to the Native Chief, but the Shaman is definitely better known. Thanks for the comparison, Doody
The only issue I have is that I'm left-handed and don't like using the compression lock backwards. I have a lefty PM2 and love the lock when it's used as intended. I wish they'd make some more reversed compression models. I have the fluted CF S90v N5 and I like it but don't carry it much. I have started to either carry an s90v or M4 bugout because of the form factor or one of my Sebenzas just for that heritage feel. That or a Microtech because they're quick and truly one handed.
Buck 10 finally purchased one when this spring I could unlock! ? Not even with Two hands had to return wrapped in butcher paper obviously it was effective The Spyderco you adjust since then prefer the compression lock
If they can make the lil native just a small native 5 with a compression lock then they can do it with the full sized native 5🙏🏽 hopefully this comes in the future because the native five profile is close to perfect
Also no one ever mentions a lock back has a spring loaded detent and is much less likely to swing the blade out if the knife is dropped that spring tension keeps the blade closed pretty well. Ive had several compression lock knives tipity tips chip or roll from dropping the knife closed and having it swing open from impact. Lock backs stay closed 90% of the time
Ive subjected my LC200N Native to some brutal tasks. I carry the Sage 5 More now because Rex 121 is insane, wouldnt put it through the same kind of jobs though I would say the Sage 5 is the improved Para 3
LC200N is nearly as tough as 14C28N, which that steel (14C) is damn near as tough as 3V. Though, with worse edge stability via less edge retention than 3V. Rex 121 is literally at the opposite end. I would say this is a good decision to treat it delicately, yeah. 😅
Spidercos range of knives and metals really makes you want to keep trying the different models, which is pretty clever of them. Which brand is biggest seller in US, anyone know?
Hmm. They've priced themselves off my radar really. Much prefer Spyderco as a company, though they are getting bit pricey as well. Here it would be victorinox definitely...then possibly Spyderco. The ukpk has sold a lot.
I would say something in the salt series ideally. I would go compression lock for outdoor knife. I take the M4 Shaman when I go camping, not really worried about corrosion.
@@SupraDeluxx-ro1qg most people don’t really use their knives but will tell you the use for them all the time. Believe me I went camping in Scandinavia with my manix 2 lightweight and native 5 lightweight and I could do anything with them. 😉👍🏼
Would i love my modern folder to be in well heat-treated Maxamet? Yeah. But Spyderco doesn't have any versatile designs, imo, as far as leverage during different things goes. For now, its Kunwu & Jack Wolf for my folder needs.
@doodysdaggers it can really irritate the hand when doing work. It's in just the spot where you would, I rather I do, put pressure at the base of my index finger. It might not irritate everyone, but it irritates me. Also, to use it, you pinch such a small part of the knife with your index and thumb, that it is not nearly hard enough to drop it. As far as securing a knife blade open, it works great.
100% agree with you. Would love to see Spyderco listen to the customers and give the Native 5 the compression lock. There is already a slip joint version - so why not ?
I think they should try for a mini shaman instead with the subtle differences to the native.
The lil native is a slightly smaller native 5 with a compression lock
Or a ball cage lock! Spyderco needs more ball cage locks!!! But yeah, compression would be awesome
This is the question! Really nice cutters from Spyderco!
Thanks for the comparison. I was wondering which one to get. I'll just get both.
That’s always the answer
@bigglock5478 My kind of answer!

They are both so good. My top 2 favorites I could never choose one over the other

Yeah absolutely
Love your review . LOVE the subject !!! I’ll be checking out your channel ( first timmer here).
My favorite knife from Spy is the Sage 5 because of the blade shape, but it would definitely change if they add a compression lock to the Native 5.
Love my Native 5 LW, but i gotta try some aluminum scales for it soon. Thanks for the comparison man.👊
I love both, probably would have to pick the sage just bc of the compression lock. Great video!

Maybe they’ve gotten better
I was mulling over these and the shaman a few weeks ago, but the Vosteed released their vanchor lock shilin cutter and I jump on that instead.
Haven't watched this yet, but dude get out of my head. I was literally just having this inner monologue two hours ago. Spooky shit man.
I’m always listening
I'm excited for the Lil Native Lightweight.
the taiwan quality on the compression lock sage is insanely good
I prefer the look of the blade on the native 5 but I’m not a big fan of the back lock. Both excellent knives!
Rest assured, best heat treat in the game, love a sage 5 with Mr. Ripplingers scales ⚖️ 🤫
Great great edc Knives. Do like the sage more for the steel liners. But for simple edc tasks the native wil be excellent. 👊🏽

Yep I love that color

Ah yeah lefty compression lock isn’t fun. Might be easier with a CME on it?
I am starting a gofundme to get Dood a new ruler...
😂
I love the Sage 5 and how thin the blade is, but the native 5 looks better. I have to go with the sage 5.
Buck 10 finally purchased one when this spring I could unlock! ? Not even with Two hands had to return wrapped in butcher paper obviously it was effective The Spyderco you adjust since then prefer the compression lock
In on this!
easy choice: military
I've owned just about every variant of the back lock. Gotta say I don't like them. Don't think I'll ever buy another. Good video, Doody. Thanks

Great point!
Native 5 ALLLLLL the way! I preordered the Cru-Carta version. It might be my “one and done” 🤷🏼♂️. That title is currently held by my Sage 1
Amen!!

Spyderco backlocks from Golden are worth a shot but the Seki backlocks are notorious for lock rock and are just not as well executed.
Interesting, never tried one

im kinda confused. is the native 5 the "outdoor" bugout killer knife? or is that the PM3? better question is what is "the" spyderco outdoor knife?
I would say the manix 2 or the shaman or the pm2
@@jordy703 i feel like i have to ask simply because most people dont really talk about spydercos being outdoor knives.

Native

native all day
I hate the action on triad locks. They are called triad because you need three hands to actuate.
Native 5 all day
I want Native 5 with combo scales as sage 4
Sage 5 all the way. There is nothing wrong with the native, just like the option of one handed operation.
Native can be one handed just takes a little practice.
I can even spidey Flick my native 5 lightweight indeed. Simple for one handed just a bit of practice 😉
SAGE WINS, IMO!!!
Sage 5 is on my wish list- have a good day
The compression lock might be the most overrated lock ever.
How so
