1966 Ford styling was really a home run, especially the front end. Also the suspension, sound isolation and frame improvements that made them 'Rolls-Royce Quiet'. NICE car, thanks guys! Viewing this makes me aware of how sick and tired I am of this SUV period.

Growing up in the 1980,s everyone had a favorite Mustang or Camaro. That is except for me. A 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 7 Litre Convertible was always my dream. Everyone could have a Mustang but how how often did you see a beauty like this? I still have an original advertisement for the car in a frame by my bed to dream about.

I had one back in my younger years, around 1970 in Quebec. White over red with a rag top and 4 speed manual. Didn't really know what I had , but I do now. I did see another in a car show near London Ontario but automatic. Loved the car.

Love this video Lou. If you noticed in the brochure the XLS, LTD, 7 Litre and the Country Squire wagons had premium die cast grilles that put their 66 Mercury cousins to shame. The regular Galaxie 500 convertible in the brochure was the iconic vehicle David Vincent drove in the opening scene on the tv show "The Invaders".

Okay, first, Lou, I was trying to wait until the end to comment but this is just too damn exciting a video to wait. Convertibles were just so cool in the mid- to late '60s. Like you said, old cars get better looking the older they get, even Chevy Vegas. Also, everytime you upload a new video, I think to myself, "Oh, man, I want this car, even more than the last video." This Ford Galaxy, however, really takes first prize. Great informational page, too (screen-shotted it and read it top to bottom). Also, when I saw a 21+ minute video I thought it was long, but pausing at around 8 minutes to comment, I came back thinking, man, I wish this video went on forever.

Another great story Lou. The trunk treats were very interesting. I was surprised reading the Production Number that in 1966 38 427s were put in the Galaxies. I thought that Ford switched entirely to the less expensive to mfg 428 in 1965? I believe the 427 was the motor they homologated in Galaxies for NASCAR in 1963 or so?? I remember back in the day we were scouring junkyards looking for 427s to put in our "hotrods". I found a 390 Interceptor and put it in my 55 Customline. Ripped out the old Y Block and dropped in the 390 FE, what a joyful noise that beast made LOL. Thanks for finding this car Lou it is beautiful and that motor!! I loved hearing those secondaries open up! You brought back some great memories of my High School hooliganism, thanks so much :-).

These are beautiful cars! My dad bought a new one in early 1967. Last of the previous year's model. It's was a 4 door with factory air, and a seat belt warning light, as well as power windows and 6 way power front bench seat. It was also an LTD model, but with a 390 2v. Loved that car, but it was a Midwestern car and rusted out. Nobody was doing floor pans on the in the early 1990s.

Lou, have you ever seen a 1966 Ford 7 Litre station wagon? Several years ago, I found a white one in a FL junk yard. The car was near perfect other than a blown C6 A/T. I bought the car for $500 and rebuilt the transmission myself. I bought it without a title but that was not needed in Maine. Even the A/C still blew cold. Electric windows and power bucket seats. One small dent in L/F fender that I fixed without hurting the paint, I drove it for a few years, did a mild restoration and sold it for $9500. I now regret selling that car.

@@loucostabile It was the first one I'd ever seen but all the numbers proved it was correct. I've since seen two others. One was a green country squire, and the other was dark blue Galaxie wagon. Mine was white with an all-red interior. I last saw mine summer of 2021 at a nearby car show here in Maine.

Fantastic car and a SUPER rare motor. Jay Leno's Dad ordered the hardtop version new when Jay was 16. He told the story on his garage channel...... when he was 16 he went with his Mom and Dad in 1966 to order a new Ford, and his Dad was just going to order the basic Galaxie 500. His Dad was not necessarily up to the latest on all the modern car stuff from the magazines like Jay was at the time, and Jay asked if he could place the order for his Dad..... so unbeknownst to his Dad he checked the 7 liter option, dual quads, and posi trac. When the car came in and his Dad fired it up, he thought there was an exhaust leak. Then he hit the gas out of the dealer and lit the rear end up..... needless to say his Dad was on to him then lol! Great story, you have to look it up!!!

The 1965 used to be my favorite but now I like 66 even better. The 66 Galaxie convertible is one of my all time favorite looking cars. I agree about the 67 Galaxie. It looks bulbous in comparison to the 66. Chevy did an even worse job with the 67 Impala, which looks more bulbous than the 67 Galaxie.

My Dad traded his 1965 Mustang coupe for a 1966 Galaxie 500 coupe in 1966. His Galaxie was dark blue with light blue interior. It had a remote trunk release which was a chrome “pull up” handle on the floor to the left of the driver seat. It also had the Ford dealer installed air conditioning that hung below the dash and had the 4 round air outlets. It was our first car with air conditioning. I had a plastic promo model of a 1966 7 Litre coupe in turquoise until last year when I sold it on eBay. I bought it new in 1966. Memories!

Nice ride I approve! I own a 1966 7 Litre convertible that is nearly identical to this one. Mine has a black interior with a white top. The original color is vintage burgundy like this one but somewhere along the way it was painted red. It is in need of some body work and new paint. I am deciding whether or not to put it back to the original color. Mine is not perfect either but it runs and drives great. My first car was a 1966 Galaxie 500 2 door HT and to this day it is one of my favorite cars I have ever owned.

My brother and I used to see 1965 and 1966 Ford Galaxies all the time when we were like 6 and 8 years old. We made fun of them because we hated Fords. But seeing one now is a treat. The way the top comes down is amazing. Also I'm amazed to see that they actually had factory cars go 0-60 in 6.2 seconds in those days. However the 9 mpg is hilarious. But then gas was around 28 cents per gallon in those days. And you are right, the older the car the more spectacular it seems to look. In general though I like them newer than 1950.

@@richmcintyre1178: Hold on, Kincaid! Before you go letting your panties get completely twisted into a knot, here this. Lou knows I mean no ill will when I pop off at the mouth. OF COURSE I would never think Lou would be disrespectful in any way, shape, or form. But if you've ever been around old, old brochures, then you should know how easy it is to inadvertently (and accidentally) tear a page. All I was doing, Bucko, is giving Lou something to ponder, lest he "gently" grasp a brochure the teeniest, tiniest bit to firmly and end up with egg in his face. It's called "constructive criticism," and you sir need to calm down and think about anger management classes. Holy Mary, Jesus and Joseph. CALM DOWN!
Another thing, one day many years ago, I was looking over a pristine '57 Chevy 4-door-Sports Hardtop and the guy opened the trunk. Like an idiot, I reached down to lift the back edge of the rubber trunking matting (to see if it had surface rust like the one I was restoring did). Turned out, this pristine Chevy had sat idle for so long (the car only had 17K original miles) that the matting had dry rotted. I put a nice tear in that previously "perfect" trunk mat. So, consider this when you read my warnings from now on, okay? I rest my case.Thank you and have a great day. --Jim

Interesting that the specs claim it has a top speed of 105 MPH which I'm guessing was the 1/4 number , Thelma and Louise could get that 66 convertible up to 130 mph in the 1/4 mile down to the Canyon floor .
FORD did some mid year changes to th galaxie for trim items that became standard , but the billot twin bar grill was on the 7 litre with the badge in the upper drivers side area . That was the high end LTD grill with 4 running lights to ID the car at night just like the Caprice or Impala had functioning corner lights when all others had the fake vents painted black .
I think it was the galaxie 500/XL that had the billot grill as an option and the Windspit hood trim while the LTD had a Metal FORD crest and no name badges other than the LTD on the B pillar and Trunk center LTD inside the FORD crest.
Our first family car was a 66 FORD once my parents paid off the house they bought in 1946 after the war where they got about $275 each from 1942 to sept 1945 . Lots of room for 6 with the huge trunk to match the luggage and the large Fuel tank for the highway with a 240 6 .
The 1965 had nice rear light but the 66 rounded off the hard angles and made the rear lights square and vertically flush . i liek the 65 Country Squire by the 66 is my choice for the hardtops or LTD.

Seems like I put a model together for a 66 galaxy that was supposed to have a 427 SOHC. Maybe a 65? The hood was ugly, as it had a big bulge in it to fit the 427SOHC under it. They are an awesome engine, but I guess nascar banned it, so they didn't make many. Drag racers loved them. There is a mercury comet currently listed on ebay with a 427 SOHC. That should give you an idea of what your looking for. Awesome car, but way out of my price range.

I disagree with cutting holes in the interior panels of any classic car for the sake of stereo speakers. It’s better just to have the original factory AM radio. My late uncle worked in the body shop of a Ford dealership in Swan River, Manitoba at that time. He bought a new 1966 Ford Galaxie four-door sedan, black exterior, with a red interior from them. He used it to transport a Boler mini trailer to the lake. After visiting with him and his wife there, a strong windstorm toppled a “tree” onto the hood of it. Being a body man, he could fix it himself.

Hi Fred Kelbert, I understand about wanting to keep a car the way it came from the factory, however back in the day we were not thinking of collect ability and just changed out rims and added stereos. I'm not sure, but he may want to inspect the diaphragm on his distributor's vacuum advance unit. It's east to do, you simply pull the little rubber vacuum tube off at the other end and suck on it. If you can suck air, the diaphragm is cracked and the timing will be retarded at speeds. And the unit is real cheap to replace. In fact, if it's more than ten years old, I'd replace it.
