My grandparents had one. Forest Green. 4 door. Power everything and AC. My pap said they rode better than a Cadillac.
It was roomy and they rode like you were on a cloud of air. It was awesome.
As another owner of a '73, I have to agree with you on each and every point -- especially about the AC vents! My car has the self-leveling rear air suspension, which provides for an even more smooth ride, especially on the highway. Turn on the ATC, pop in an 8-track, and cruise on down the road.

As I recall the 74 Cadillac sedan I had was the best riding car I’ve ever owned.
The Cadillac’s (DeVille’s and Fleetwood’s) of this time period had a bit too much wallow, the Eldorado was better.
This type of car was amazing. Get in the car on a Friday afternoon back in the day and drive from LA to Vegas and feel more rested when you arrived than when you left. '69 Olds 98.
My old man bought a 4-door in 1974. Such a time-warp for me to see the color and interior... Probably as a result of this, I prefer the taillight treatment on the 1974+ models but they're all beautiful. I still remember -- I was about seven years old then -- being at the dealer picking it up with mum and dad and the other kids. I walked right up to the car and closely eyeballed and ran my finger over the C-pillar Brougham crest and lettering. Not sure exactly what I was thinking but I must have thought it fascinating :)
What I appreciate is those big long 8 foot two doors. My dad was a big luxury two door ford driver, LTDs to be precise. I grew up in the 70s and they were all big floaty boats back then.

My parents had a 1970 or 71 don't recall and then a 1973, the 1971 had a 428 ci and the 1973 a 460. And yes they were very comfortable, rode like a dream and had a good sound system with tons of room and an acre of trunk space. I was in high school and drove them often. Road noise was almost nothing. The back seat is huge and also comfortable especially for high school students. 🙂
The front seat wasn’t bad for making out either, except for the steering wheel, I kept hitting the horn

I’ve never been in a ‘73 Marquis but I will tell you that the ‘74 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham was beyond comfortable. It was literally a floating living room on the highway.
The Caddy’s and Lincoln’s of that era were the same, my aunt had a 77’ Caddy coup deville and man that thing floated. Todays shift is ridiculous never mind the prices wow.
My Buddy had an early 87 Oldsmobile Brougham correctly described as "Driving Your Couch"

There are few things that sound better than the low rumble of a mild v8. No need for over the top, bleeding ears loud exhaust to still get a great sounding vehicle you can appreciate while driving. Love the car Adam, great video!
My grandparents had a 1975 when I was really little (I'm a 1974 model human,) but I remember those garage door headlights, and just how plush and fancy the interior was, compared to anyone else's cars I rode in. Great old boats, they really don't make em like that anymore.
A trip down memory lane. My grandmother had a 1973 Monterey Custom in this color scheme with vinyl top, fender skirts, brown interior with ivory vinyl seats. It was about as Maquis’d a Monterey as you could get. I drove it on many occasions after I had my license and it was like floating on a cloud.
Everything you say about these cars is spot on. Growing up, we had a 76 Lincoln 4 door with 460 and that was a great car. Also a 77 Lincoln town coupe, with the 400 and C6. Also a great car. But my favorite was our 78 Mercury Marquis Brougham (gold-bronze color with a chocolate brown vinyl top) with a 400 and FMX trans. 2 door. This was the quietest car and smoothest ride. You could not tell the engine was running, it was so quiet. The emblem on the glove box said Ride Engineered. I believe it. We never had to work on that car. Like I mean never. The Buffalo NY winters eventually took it toll in rust and we had to send her to the scrap yard. I did pull the 400 to save it for something else. I really liked the FMX transmission. If you left it in drive, and floored it, it would shift into second at 55 miles per hour. It probably has 2.75 rear gears, in the 8.7" rear end. The Lincolns had 9" rears as I remember. But that 78 Merc would fly. Up in Canada going up to Quebec, had the car running 120 for at least 10 minutes, and smooth as can be. I think it used 2 quarts of oil going that fast. Neat thing about these cars, the hood was so large, that the faster you went, the air hitting the hood would keep the front tires firmly planted on the pavement. They steered great over 100. Not something every car can lay claim to. If I ever come across a 78 (or earlier) Mercury, I will buy another one again. Just amazing cars that you will never see again. In my opinion, their engineering hit the mark on every case. Love your channel. Keep it up. -----Doozer
I had the 77 Lincoln town coupe also with a 400, that was the softest ride ever! Plush velour seats like a big couch. Actually pretty similar to this vehicle
We had a 1976 Mercury Marquis two door in red. (I was too young to drive.) We also had a 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe and I remember dad saying that Walter P. Chrysler demanded all cars would allow a man to wear a full brimmed hat. High roofline in that late 49 series. Thank you for the memories.

One of the most comfortable highway cruisers ever built. One of my uncles always bought a new Marquis Brougham every three years since the Marquis came out 'till the day he died. He drove it up the Mt. Washington Auto Road once or twice too.
My father owned the 74 and we made at least six trips that I recall to Florida from Michigan back when the speed limit was 75 it was like a living room on Wheels it was the most comfortable car ever. you didn't feel any bumps whatsoever and when he went to pass someone at 75 miles an hour that engine had enough power it would still pull you into the seat when he passed someone it had the 460 4 Barrel motor of course. When we got to high school we would flip the air cleaner upside down let more air in you can hear the four barrels open, awesome then another story when there were four wheel drives and all other vehicles buried in the snow during the Blizzard of 78 my dad's Grand Marquis drove over it like it was nothing it had the posi track rear end I'll never forget that we were practicality the only car on the road.
This was our family car as a kid ..I still miss this car to this day !! Smoothest ride on the road and beautiful body style ☺️
This exact car, same color and all was my first car back in 1982. Wish I've kept it. I would love to find one like this and buy it. Lots of memories. Good times on US. Reagan was president. One bedroom apartment in Forest Pk. Illinois was $150 a month to rent and I was 18. God time goes fast, way to fast.
Have to agree with Adam on the ride. My dad bought a somewhat worn out 76 Brougham back in 85 and we drove it straight through from Houston to Miami. Yep it smoked some and burned a little oil on the trip. But it ran solid and the ride and lack of interior noise impressed me, even at 15 years old. Big, solid, heavy, and had a fantastic ride. This video brought back memories for sure. Thanks!

We had one of these new - dark green - when I was about 16 years old. I LOVED driving this car. It felt like it floated down the road. Thanks for the remembrance.
Thanks for the drive and raising my awareness of these great cars. Really appreciate the tips re carbs etc. Just a suggestion but going forward. You might want to consider a standard format - loved your presentation of the interior, exterior and of course the drive. Consider including the trunk and a brief underbody tour. People want to see the whole car. These old land yachts often have spectacular sized trunk. The underneath of the car is of equal interest for collectors and enthusiasts. Condition, an idea of how it's made, easy to work on, any known corrosion traps etc. Thanks again. Good luck with future videos. I'm amazed how nice the condition of your car is.

Yes, rub it in! My Mom had a similar era Merc. She's 5' munchkin. Somehow she managed to see out the windows and reach the pedals. Her's was what we affectionately called monster green :-)

Always thought these were a nice looking ride, especially in this 2 door version. And as long as the road is arrow straight, they are a good road car for sure. I happen to live in an area with mostly 2 lane twisty roads with a lot of 35 MPH curves. In these full size Mercury/Ford/Lincolns of this era, they are 20 MPH curves, and you still had better dose up on the Dramamine before you depart.
Lol! Well...they aren't really as bad as that in terms of handling. You can run the curves comfortably 10 mph over. They do get a bit wallowy and the front end washes out if you try to toss them around...they can be a handful if pushed too hard. Hey, this car is close to 5000 lbs and sprung for comfort, which makes it a great boulevard cruiser.

@@kevintomb Curb weight is the weight of a car/truck's base model plus a full tank of gas, it doesn't include optional equipment, passengers or cargo. The car mags from back in the day always listed curb AND test weight in their reviews, the test weights were always at least 250-300 lbs heavier and more representative of the vehicles actually real world weight.

We had this car, as a kid. My mom kept it until she passed. My brother has it now. It floated along like a big old boat.
We owned a 1972 Ford T-Bird with the 460-V8 engine, in a beautiful bronze color. I suspect it was the same car underneath as this '73 Marquis. It was the most comfortable and most powerful car our family ever owned. The sound when the 4-bbl carbs opened up under full power!! Wish we still had that car......
I have to disagree with Adam on the interior dashboards. I think the burlwood of the 1975-1978 is much more elegant looking than the more plain 1973-1974's. My family owned a 1978 Ford Country Squire wagon with the upgraded Mercury Marquis interior package and the inside looked gorgeous.

I remember a conversation with a dealer at Conoly Phillips Lincoln-Mercury in 1973. The salesman expressed not liking the boxy exterior design, worried that shoppers would be put-off, but mentioned that once a car shopper took a test drive the sale was easy. Btw, not only was the Marquis Brougham interior upholstery beautiful, it was extremely strong and very durable - better than leather, imho.
Agreed. Leather is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s slippery during turns. Clean up and care leave chemicals and residue to sit on. Cloth, maybe a shampoo for serious messes. Otherwise a whisk or a vac. 🤷♂️👍🏻
I remember going down North Dakota farm roads smooth as glass with the Marquis. Smoothest ride I've ever experienced ever.

I drove the Mercury Marquis Broughams, Mercury Grand Marquis and the Lincoln Towncars - 1970's - 2000's - fantastic cars !!
Totally agree with you on this car. I purchased a used 74 Marquis Colony Park with the same engine and same color as the car shown, it had over 100k on it when purchased but ran like a top.
Every time I took the family someplace they would all fall asleep the car rode so well like floating down the road and so quiet.
The tailgate could swing or fold down with added face to face seating folded into the floor. Some gripes I had was the weight of the spare wheel when I needed to change it and get it out of the side panel. Another was that the driver door was so heavy it wore out the hinges and it was a pain to replace supporting the door on a jack. Lastly the fake wood effect on the sides of the car fade over time. Otherwise a great wagon that could haul 4x8 sheets inside with back seat folded down and you could close the tailgate. Good memories of this car, heavy and well made.
My dad had a 1976 four door, almost the same color. And yes those cars (all Lincoln and Mercury from that era) were absolutely fabulous to ride around in.
What a wonderful ride for a long winter night trip, with the heater on; or a rainy night.
i graduated from college in '73....my first job was selling SEM's in 13 states.....driving my 74 LTD much of the time......it was a POS.....ONE WAS EITHER FLOATING BLISSFULLY DOWN THE ROAD OR HORRIFIED BY THE HANDLING WHEN CALLED FOR.....it almost killed me twice in 100,000 miles.....next car was a Bonny....it was heaven....wish i had it now
I think cars of this era had spectacular AC units in them; my grandmother had a '75 442. The air in that thing would blast you into the back-seat, and cool the whole cabin in like 2 minutes, even with the sunroof. Great video, thanks for sharing.

My father was a Lincoln/Mercury salesman and he had this car as a demo. I can tell you that it was a great car. He sold it within six weeks. The dealership sold 15 of this model, and my father sold 9 of them. This was a hot model.

My last 2 autos were a 97 Mercury Marquis LS and now I have the 2005 Mercury Marquis Ultimate Edition. Love these cars. Going back I find that my 76 Chrysler New Yorker St Regis package with the 440Ci 4 BBl and the toned down 77 New Yorker 400 Ci lean burn had surpassed anything at that time for ride, looks and comfort. Thick sofa like leather in my 77 and thick sofa like crushed velour in my 76. All them years ago I was a car porter at a dealership drove everything they produced. Not taking anything away from your Marquis. She's a beauty.

Seeing this and the memories come flooding back. I rode to many grade school basketball practices in a brown Brougham like this. 4 kids across the back and 2 in the front with my mom who had a cigarette going and the CBS evening News blaring on the am radio.
What I loved about cars in the 70's was that when you started turning a corner in the front, about 10 second later the rear of the car was just finishing completing the turn.
I loved these Mercs even when l was a very young driver...My dads friend bought one brand new and he let me drive it on the first day he bought it home.. l was 17.It was a light green with dark green interior..it was gorgeous and just floated along...Later as an adult l had a few marquis and Crown vics. myself..l loved these cars and even named my bird Marquis after the car...In my opinion these were one of the best cars ever built until the very late 80 s
I drove one of these across the desert of California for just a few hours in the early eighties. I had driven all kinds of big luxury cars but I noticed the ride quality in this in minutes.
Car looks in great shape. I can't imagine how the seats could possibly match high end modern seats. My BMW E39 M5 seats are supremely comfortable and I have an E60 with high spec and the comfort seats. Both incredibly comfortable and it's the way you feel after a long trip that illustrates it.

This car would have been perfect to use in Escape From New York in place of the Cadillac, hehe.
I bought a 73 four door green one when I was 17 back in 79, paid 1000.00 and had a blast cruising around in that car.

After decades of driving "downsized" cars, I had the opportunity to drive a friend's 1972 Buick convertible awhile back. It was like driving an aircraft carrier. The hood was as large as a tennis court. Turn the steering wheel and it was if the car was saying, "I'll think about it." Thankfully I didn't have to parallel park it!

My Dad owned that make and model except it was light blue. A wonderful ride with lots of power and style. If you couldn't afford the Lincoln Continental, then this was the car that you would desire...
Found a 4 door '73 Brougham with drivers side damage at the front & rear corners.
The old girl has a 429 4v and shows 65,487 on the clock. The body damage not withstanding, judging by the pedal & driver's seat wear (twin comfort in green vinyl) I think it might truly be original miles. Headlights are stuck open and the front marker light & fender are crunched.
I'm definitely tempted after a ride in your beautiful coupe.

I had a 1993 Marquis. Thee best riding car I've ever owned. It also towed my 4,000-pound boat with no problem.
I had a 1977 LTD II Brougham in the 1980's and I wanted to put a nice engine in it. So I was driving down the road and I saw a powder blue 1969 Mercury Marquis. It had a 429 2 barrel in it and it was four-door powder blue with a dark blue top. It only had 42,000 miles on it. I bought the car took the engine out of it and put it in the LTD II. I decided to do some work to it four barrel intake, transpack, bigger cam to upgrade it. When we were taking the intake manifold off we found out that it was actually a 429 Cobra jet that happened to have those cylinder heads put on it from the factory. It was a freak automobile that ended up having like 500 horsepower by the time I was done modifying it. That car was so comfy but I was blowing away t-buckets with dual quads on telegraph road...lol. it would get rubber at 45 mph kicking down in the first and then squa the tires in second and third.
My dad bought one of these back in the mid seventies. It was very comfortable, but it was definitely a land yacht. He sold it an bought a Buick Regal around 1979.

My first car was a used 1975 Mercury Marquis, it was a tuna\party Mobile, I was young and in the military, had to replace the tranny than one day I heard 3 loud bangs going to work, seems that the Cam Shaft blew apart, that was it for her, a sad day. She was huge. Nice Mercury that you have there, she’s a beauty, in cherry condition, enjoy!! 😊
Barkalouger full length recliner V-8 powered. Dad was a Buick /olds guy. But all said LA to Vegas was a easy trip. 50 - 110 same gas mileage and same smooth ride.. Longer than a F-350 and heck of a lot easier than a truck. Had a lot of fun in High school with the 4 door queen bed in back. Love the big cars.

My parents traded their '70 XL convertible with a 429 4v cruise control, tilt wheel, am/fm, A/C, buckets seats and console for a new '73 LTD>>>my mother thought it was the most beautiful car ever. Blue on blue on blue. Every option available car. It did drive like a dream. I drove it. But the XL was much "fun'r" to drive. My parents ALWAYS had huge cars. I learned how to drive in a 1973 Mercury Monterey, which was the Marquis without the Marquis (no AC, crank windows, but a glorious BOAT of a car). Subsequently, when I saved enough cash, I bought one used as MY first car. I loved it! It had the largest engine that Ford made at the time. I remember one night I was coming home from work and I had some gear head pull up next to me in some tricked out muscle car. He's looking at me and laughing - gunning his car like he's going to do something. I pushed the brake pedal all the way to the floor and started easing on the gas. My Monterey began to slowly rise as the torque built up in the rear end. The light turned green and I took my foot off the brake. It was pretty much like something out of Star Wars - the car went into hyper drive. Left the idiot back at the light. The only problem I had was that it was not an Arizona car - it was a Pittsburgh car, and subsequently the SALT used on the roads each winter had taken it's toll on the underside. The car lasted me a few years before it would no longer pass the state inspection. Gosh, I miss that car!

Wow I remember cars like that when I was a kid when I first got my Drivers license you could sleep in the backseat comfortably plenty of room in the trunk😂 A friend of mine purchased a 72 Mercury Montego and couldn’t figure out how to turn the highbeams on 😅 Those where the Good old days Driving 👍😎
My father bought one of these and when Icame to visit we all piled in his new car and went to dinner. With in a mile of the house I got so sea sick I could not eat my dinner at the resturant. He never noticed the roling rocking motion of the car
on the road.

What a beauty, that wafty comfortable appeal of a land yacht. Modern car seats are hateful on the whole, having said that the seats in my 18yo Volvo V70 are incredible. But most new cars younger than say 10 years have cheap, hard seats. Great video, thanks for sharing.

These are and were great road car's my folks had a deep blue 74 and riding in the back seat on family trips from Seattle to the bay area was like riding on the living room coach, if I'm not mistaken the 4 door advertisement at the time was of a diamond cutter cutting a diamond in the back seat at freeway speed 👍
I think the diamond 💎 cutting was done a rough city street, possibly cobblestone
