  • Arnold Schoenberg taught his 12-tone approach to composition at the University of California in Los Angeles. He was a devoted student of the musical traditions which preceded him, believing that his work arose out of Wagnerian chromaticism and the asymmetrical phrasing of Brahms. Schoenberg's Three Pieces Op.11, written in 1909, contains echoes of the thematic work of Liszt's transformation technique, and the closely woven motives of the last intermezzi of Brahms. But it is also his first step away from tonality, employing an unfamiliar vocabulary that continues to challenge our expectations of musical expression.
