  • Hettie is teething and sadly it has been a week of progress but also tragedy; three more orphans arrive in three days.
    Remember to watch the ads so that critical funds can be earned to help the baboons. Make a difference for these innocent, intelligent beings.
    See the video when Hettie chose her name last week; • What Name Did July Orp...

    Hettie's mother was killed by a car on roads nearby. The lockdown meant quiet roads, however, now the roads seem busier than usual and the wildlife is now at risk.
    She and her mother were left for dead until her rescuers stopped and saw the tiny infant still alive. They bought her to C.A.R.E., knowing she would be rehabilitated for release here.
    Thank you so much to everyone that helped us, we are full of gratitude! Thank you for your support and we hope to keep you updated on her progress. She was estimated to be just under two weeks old upon arrival, and now a week later her teeth are cutting through and she is gaining strength. She will join adult baboons soon and when physically strong enough and able to be weaned from a special milk formula which she presently depends on, she will be integrated into a wild troop a few hours drive from C.A.R.E.

    I am so sorry about the babies and their mommy's, it's just not fair. I'm in the USA (Sheriff Deputy and DVM) and it's hard for me to understand that Baboon, Vervet are considered pests. I guess it's just the same as we think Squirrels, rabbits, opossum etc are pests here

    • @primatecare
      @primatecare  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Chacma baboon populations have been listed as declining by the IUCN and some scientists have predicted their extinction by 2070; the fact they can be viewed as a pest is a misconception and humans need to do more to protect their crops (fences are effective, if done right).

    This may sound like a dumb question but how does that work in the wild when newborns are lactose intolerance??

    • @primatecare
      @primatecare  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the baboons milk is very different to anything we can try to replicate, often it can develop when they have had too strong a formula too soon - and then we have to switch them for a bit to lactose free. Then slowly we introduce the usual milk formula again. Lactose free really helps babies who seem to have a lot of stress and so their immune response can be allergic like reactions. It really helps calm their immune system, along with lots of TLC and stability.

      He is doing really well thankfully and we just put an update on our facebook - he was adopted into a wild troop and is now FREE and WILD - job well done - fixing another humans error. Baboons are intelligent, sentient beings and do not deserve the abuse and trauma humans inflict on them. He is an incredible baboon, an absolute pleasure to watch wild and free. You can see him wild #orphanbaboonmowgli on our Instagram or facebook page. Thanks

    Primate Care/Hettie: If it is not expensive, they make teething rings for animals. You might also want to invest in pacifiers which can be tied around the neck. These devices prevent the animals from chewing up things and it keeps them calm. Also consider buying toys for them as monkeys, gorillas, orangatangs and even baboons like to keep busy.

    Orphan Baboon Hettie: If Hettie is teething, you can look into or buy her a teething ring. They do make them for animals (dogs) and it won't hurt her. Try it and let me see the results on youtube should you decide to buy one.
