Weezer really was one of the best bands from the mid 90's. Their talents were so understated, their one of a kind.
Their debut album is one of the best debuts of all time, I’ll argue that to the grave. Every song is on that album is awesome. Not a single skippable track.
I like the pause to appreciate the chillness of the song. [Unpause] "SAY IT AINT SO!"
You're totally right, that chorus change with Dear Daddy takes this to a completely different lyrical level.
Fortunately, the stepfather (Stephen) was not an alcoholic, though he did drink. However, just finding a bottle of beer that Stephen had in the fridge caused Rivers (a teenager at the time) a lot of anxiety due to his estranged father being an alcoholic and leaving the family when Rivers was younger. He was very worried that the situation would repeat with Stephen, and though it didn’t, those feelings really come out in the song.

Agree with all you said. When performing live, the band always does or did, this song as the last song of the night. He gets so emotional that it HAS to be the final song of the night.

Little-known fact, Rivers Cuomo (the frontman/main songwriter) used to be the lead guitar player in a progressive/power metal band called Avant Garde. He has serious shredding chops that he's always kept in his back pocket in Weezer's power pop sound.
You should look up _ Kottonmouth Kings _ the song Hold It In or the band Hollywood Undead _ Hear Me Now _ which I think you two will like a lot better
I highly recommend Tool's 'Sober,' or anything by Slipknot.
Still remember when The Sweater Song came out. I thought they were a bunch of dorks and couldn't play rock. Wrong, so wrong. These guys are awesome and this one is my favorite of theirs by far.

I'm a sucker for "Island in the Sun" by Weezer, but they have a lot of good content worth checking out. They're definitely more in the 90s pop-rock vein than metal though imho.
