This song is about the fear of adandonment. Lead singer Rivers' father was an alcoholic who left when River was young. Years later, as a teenager, there's a stepfather in the picture, and when Rivers finds his step dad's beer in the fridge, he thinks he's an alcoholic who's going to leave, too. The chorus is made for singing along to, as loudly as possible, in a moving car. I sang myself hoarse to this song a few times in my cousin's car, and then in my own. "Say It Ain't So" is definitely in the upper echelon of Weezer songs.

Actually, it's about him coming to realization that he's become everything that he despised about his father, which is, first and foremost, being an alcoholic. "Say It Ain't So!"

Guys, this song is about ALCOHOLISM and it's destructive impacts on families. That's why it says "Your drug is a heartbreaker." And the whole thing about writing about writing to his absent father and saying "Like father, stepfather, the son is drowning in the flood." It's about living with the very real impact alcoholism has on generations of families. There's a lot of alcoholism in my family (and my husband's), so this song hit me hard from the first time I heard it. And I love Weezer to this day. They are still making fantastic new music!

Ironically, Rivers later said that he was mistaken about the whole situation about alcohol and his father and step-father. They were simply just absent fathers, and weren't true alcoholics..

In my humble opinion, this is THE best album of the 90's. Still blows me away almost 30 years later.
I still remember listening to this album on repeat. Just got it as a gift for both of my weirdos(my sons). They hate most new music but I raised them on old school ish so I kinda love their judgy attitudes about real music
I'm not sure I'd go that far, but to each their own. This was a fantastic album, though no doubt about that.

Weezer, Blue Album. Is an absolute masterpiece from the 90's!
I'm an older rock fan. I always smile listening to Weezer. They have a fun alternative sound and can kick it as hard as anyone. Like a lot of great bands they have slowly built a catalog of great songs.
This whole album is a masterpiece. In the Garage is definitely my favorite track from that album.
"Hashpipe" is a Weezer song that I think you both will really enjoy. It's a relatively simple rocker with a really awesome guitar riff that is a whole vibe. The video is fun too, if you're able to watch that instead of having to do a lyric video for copyright (also, the lyric videos I've seen for it get the lyrics VERY wrong). Weezer has tons of great songs but "Hashpipe" is one of my faves from them and I'd love to see you react to it.

I always took it to be about using alcohol/other substances to deal with daddy issues. The “something bubbling” behind his back is most likely a bong.
This whole album is a masterpiece. Weezer kind of fell into a formulaic writing slump later on, but when they first came out, man, they were so genuine.

THE SWEATER SONG is a must 🔥
Saw them last weekend. Their concerts are great as they don't jack with the songs like some bands...just sing them straight while sounding like the album. When the first cords of this song started you could hear people all around go crazy. They nailed it with the crowd doing the "say it so" part at the top of our lungs. BTW, some of their post-90s stuff is good too (IMHO), like "Perfect Situation", "Pork and Beans" and "Beverly Hills". Their library is pretty big.
You guys should do Undone - The Sweater Song or. Hash Pipe for the next Weezer song. Weezer is definitely a band that will grow on you. They do have some great sound.

Weezer is pretty awesome, many grunge/ alternative bands wrote lyrics and sang about troubles in their lives. They just came out and said how they felt! A generation that had to pay for the crazy lives their parents lived! Beverly Hills another good one! A new suggestion how bout some “YES”! Roundabout, Starship Trooper, I’ve Seen All Good People, Close to The Edge!! Great positive music!!!

"Island in the Sun" is mid-tier Weezer and "Buddy Holly" is pretty good.
But "Say It Ain't So" is a masterpiece.
I only wish you could've seen the video. It's just them performing the song in a room, but it showcases their personalities.
The basic inspiration of the song is that Rivers Cuomo's father was an alcoholic who left the family when Rivers was a young child. Years later, a teenaged Rivers saw a beer in the refrigerator and panicked that his stepfather was also an alcoholic and was also going to leave the family.
I agree with everyone who suggests The Sweater Song and Hashpipe.

As a 41 year old, it feels amazing to know the songs that meant a lot to me resonate with your generation. Thanks for doing it, takes me back to my hearing the first time.
Your comment hurt me deeply. When I read "as a 41-year-old..." I quickly thought "oh cool, even older people love Weezer!"
It took me about 2 and a half seconds to remember that I'm 43, Weezer is my generation's, music, and I am "older people" now.
The song is about coming home and seeing your that your stepfather has bought a six pack of Heineken and it is the fridge and the anxiety that produces because your absentee father is an alcoholic.
You guys should check out a band called live. Pronounced as you would say performing live. Two of their iconic songs are lightning crashes and I alone

WHO told you not to pay attention to lyrics?!! There are some songs that absolutely hinge on the lyrics!! I understand if you can't follow everything though, as a lot of artists use deeper metaphors to express themselves. Thank God we have so many sites helping to uncover the meaning behind lyrics to these songs!!
Yeah I can't understand why so many "reaction" channels straight up ignore the lyrics/meaning of the lyrics. UNFORGIVEABLE.
"The Perfect Situation" by Weezer is great and you gotta check it out! Make sure you find the studio version because the music video is different and doesn't flow like it should. A lyric video would probably be fine as long as it's the studio/album version.

I freaking love this song. I don’t know what it is about this song, but my friend and I used to play it every night we went out to the bar (which was a lot in my early 20s) and get super emo about it. And everyone knew when Abby and Alicia played Weezer that it was probably time to go 😂 Ironic that our drinking song was about the destruction of alcoholism. I didn’t know what the song was about until years later, though.
I know the videos get blocked easily, but this song also has a good video that reminds me of hanging out with my friends in the 90s.

Great reaction guys. Love Weezer. Another "nerd rock" group you should check out are The Presidents of the United States of America. They're just fun to listen to. I recommend their well known early songs, either Peaches or Lump.

The song is one of alcohol abuse that frontman, River Cuomo, wrote about his family issues, especially his step-father. The Heine at the beginning is about the beer etc... Great song. Check out Hashpipe

"Say It Ain't So" peaked @ #51 in 1995. It was the 3rd single released from "Weezer (The Blue Album)" produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars. Previous singles were "Undone - the Sweater Song" (#57) and "Buddy Holly" (#18).
Sad that it "peaked" at #51. This is an all-time song.

Favorite weezer song. Another band you should listen to from the 90s. 311. Listen to beyond the grey sky, homebrew, that song rocks hard. Plus beautiful disaster. Flowing is also a good song. They still make music to this day.

My favorite Weezer song, bar none. Rivers Cuomo's voice just gets me every time. I've been a Weezer fan for 25 years, and I love that you've become fans as well. For your next one, I recommend "Pork and Beans", "Hash Pipe", or "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived." OR you could do "The End of the Game", which includes a guitar riff that is a tribute to Eddie Van Halen.

I love "Hashpipe"! Such a simply constructed song but such a great riff and... idk, I just love it. My last band and I even used to do a very hard, very metal cover of it and it was always fun to perform.

This song will forever remind me of when my son was a little boy and I was driving around town running errands with my 4 year old son in the back seat. This song came on the radio and he was singing it at the top of his lungs. Good memories!
