This is such an important film to come out. To come up with the funds to raise to make the movie himself is amazing as hell, to not allow anyone to STOP him putting this movie out, very courageous and inspiring, I hope we can see others like this ... Marcus Garvey an example of one.

the part of the interview where the descendent's of Nat Turner's slave owners give Nat Turner tours & no $$ is given to Nat Turner's actual family tells u everything u need to know......i remember in the 8th grade being given a paper of all these inventions that african americans invented such as streetlights, gas mask, sugar processing machine, etc (google all this shit lol)....& maybe 6 years later I was looking at a streetlight & I thought to myself "does the black family of that black inventor that created a streetlight get residual checks? I don't think they do, we would've heard of them like u about the Trumps or the Hiltons."

This man owes nobody a explanation about his past . He was found not guilty in court and a lot of black man are being killed without a chance to be proven innocent. If you are a black person holding this over your his head shame on you . You praise the same white people who enslaved your ancestors. A lot of you have great grandparents with stories like Birth of A Nation. Don't be ignorant to bring up someone's past to blemish there accomplishments. Support the movie and the history they don't want to teach your black children about being strong and fighting back.

I can't wait to see "Birth Of A Nation".. F the critics... I'm a fan of "Nate Parker", his past is his past. The man was found not guilty of his previous convictions of many years ago. They tell minorities to respect and trust in our justice system... however it seems as if every time a man of color achieves any amount of success, it's extremely important to remind him of his dark past... EVEN if he is innocent.

I hear a lot of folks talk about being tired of slave movies. I totally feel them but I was thinking, I'm thinking this day in age...I don't look at slave movies as demeaning. I actually see how strong we had to be at that time. Our people were separated from our families, humiliated, men embarrassed in front of their women and children...all this stuff is hard to see, but imagine how strong our people had to be to overcome that. I feel they had a strength that we forgot about. So sometimes, I'm like to we need to see more of these movies? LOl. We are so complacent now a days and forgot how bad it REALLY was. That's the only reason I see these movies as still being necessary!

Kimberli Myrick i feel where both of you are coming from but in general people just need to just be more socially conscious of one another, even within our own community and things will only get better. even we live and rule based upon hierarchy, so it's almost contradictory to scream equality. i'll definitely support but i have become torn by my communities self serving actions.

Freshboi 2 I do support it. I just won't watch it. I bought tickets for my 2 teenaged nephews, that don't know about Nat Turner, to go watch it. I'm just done with Slavery movies. For me, the triumph will only be overshadowed by the countless evil acts.

I love this movie, but what the #$@! do Gucci Mane and Two Chains have to do with Nat Turner?! Nothing!!!! That's a mixed metaphor and it doesn't work.

because young ppl love them. he was trying to appeal to younger crowds too, because as we all know, these two rappers can rap about how big their shit in the toilet was and these kids will still love them

It is kinda weird that they added a fictional rape as a central component to the film. Like, why?

+Laughing Man Malcolm You do realize that slaves were raped on the regular? Come on, I know you know that! Men, women AND children at that.

GimmeABeat86 You know who else was raped? This man's victim. His friend who's a screenwriter for this movie was convicted for raping the victim. Nate Parker only got off because the law where this occurred used to state that when you give verbal consent, you give it indefinitely. How else did he not get charged but his friend spent time in jail when they both raped her the same night. Fuck this guy.

***** We just have hid quote from Ebony. Him saying that if he did what he did today (sleep with someone too intoxicated to verbally consent), that he'd be in jail. He got off on a technicality. Stop defending rapists man.

***** "It was a Variety article, but ,he's the link and quote “I think by today’s legal standards, a lot has changed with regards to universities and the laws in sexual assault,” he said. “I feel certain if this were to happen in 2016, the outcome would be different than it was. Courts are a lot stricter about this kind of thing. You don’t touch someone who is so intoxicated - period.”

the film looks wack, i hope its better than the trailer shows. its like a tv movie. its good to tell the story and i will watch it. trailers look terrible. but the film is about nat turner not nate parker and too much media coverage has not been about the actual movie.

it's crazy how this whole convo was on point but my bro voting for Hillary Clinton?the seemingly lesser of one evil won't help anything. I'm from norfolk fam, so I'm proud of you and your work, but the Clinton's are a huge part of our current prison industrial complex that you spoke on. Voting is crucial but only when we have a solid plan with a solid candidate,we should all focus locally. This presidential ish is all a joke, what has any president literally done for our babies?

Saw the movie and I wasn't impressed...kind of watered down and it needed better writing...very little in the movie dealing with the planning of the revolt...12 years a slave was a better film overall
