To all these people who said Nate sold the movie to Fox, yall are 100% inaccurate. Nate sold the DISTRIBUTION rights to Fox. Meaning, he owns the film and once Fox recoups the $17 million, Nate gets 80% of all the revenue. Again, Nate owns the movie. Fox only owns the Distribution rights.

This will be one of the few exceptions that I will take my kids to see an R rated movie. This is a great opportunity to show our children THE TRUTH about Amerikkkan history. I believe that this is a film that teachers elementary school teachers, middle school teachers, and high school teachers should show to their students. Even with the graphic nature of the film, we can't try to sugarcoat and downplay how we were treated in this country. Amerikkka wants us to forget about our history. They want us to ignore how we were treated then and how we are still being treated now. This is film that is bringing truth to light and truth to power and we cannot allow them to sweep this under the rug as if this never existed. When it comes to black history, this is about as real as its going to get. I didn't learn about black history until I went to college and took an African American studies course lectured by a man who was a black panther. This is a film for everyone to see. Slavery has left a permanent stain on this country. Over four centuries of racial oppression and we as a nation still carry a black eye and there couldn't have been a better time than now to address this issue head on and unapologetically.

We as black people have been scarred for over 400 years. You can take your kids to see an R rated movie as long as they are accompanied by an adult. It even says so in the motion picture guidelines. My kids know right from wrong. I teach them right from wrong. I teach them what's appropriate and what's not appropriate and you don't get to dictate how choose to raise my kids. If this was your typical rated r movie then I wouldn't bring them but this not just a movie. This is a part of our American history so why shield it from them? This movie will shed light on how we as black people were treated them and how it correlates to everything that is happening now. I don't want my son to grow up to be afraid of police officers. They supposed to look up to them as heroes and not monsters but it's hard to do that because all they see when they parents turn on the news are black men getting murdered unjustly at the hands of the police and it's up to the good ones to take a stand against the ones who abuse that authority no matter the rank or position. As a child I had to go to the library to learn more about black history because the books that a reading in school didn't include anything but a measly paragraph about Martin Luther King. I didn't learn a thing in school about our history until I went to college. I believe that we have a responsibility to teach our children especially our black children that we didn't always possess the privileges that we take for granted now. They could not play at the same parks, eat at the same restaurants, drink from the same fountains, or use the same restrooms as whites. We had to order our food from the back. We had to sit in the balcony at theaters and courtrooms. There was a time where we once had to guess the amount of jellybeans in a jar just to vote. There was a time where interracial marriage forbidden in a court of law. There was a time where blacks had to give up their seat to a white person. There was a time where a black man had to literally walk off the sidewalk and look down if a white woman passed by. There was a time in our history where they would hold carnivals, invite children and pass out candy and souvenirs to them while they stood and watched the lynching of black people. Are we supposed to hide this part of our history from our kids? It is imperative that they see this movie, how far we've comes since the days of Nat Turner and how we fat we still need to go as a nation so that we ALL can be treated as equals. My kids are seeing this film!!!

I'm a white man. I want to see this movie. I am not bothered by slave tales. I am not a white person that says "Get over slavery" because I am not dense. And I will not demonize a guy that isn't in jail, was never found guilty and who has always maintained his innocence. I wonder why the movie did terrible? Because the media villainized him. The movie had so much buzz. But it seems like every possible demographic skipped out on it. I get white people feeling uncomfortable. Not that it's right. It's just a fact that some can't stand black stories that are truthful. Slavery was brutal. And white people seem to hate it. I don't , I just accept history and hope to learn from it. Slavery films have done decent as of late. But it's telling when Free State of Jones with a white lead bombs but The Birth of a Nation, which was highly buzzed, is trending to do worse. Now it could be because of the rape stories popping up on ever news outlet or Nate Parker's lack of draw. But I just think it's unfortunate that a guy that pushed so hard for this movie got a raw deal with bad media buzz about his past....I am just sick of people demonizing people that maintain their innocence.

Saw the Kevin Hart movie yesterday, worth seeing as well. Both are great for the cause tbh, extremely funny and it's supporting our people. One should want to see both.

I truly enjoyed this interview and if you have a as well please share it on all your social media. This is the only interview I've seen where an acquitted rape case hasn't been the stem of the interview pertaining to the movie. Only In America you will see a black man continuously having to explain himself about rape charges he was acquitted and then have an audience with so much outrage but have rapist who were caught on film and hvae witnesses run free and there is no outrage.

His friend who's a writer for this film was convicted of the rape though. The only reason Nate didn't get found guilty is because Georgia had to awful consent laws back in 1999. The victim consented to sex when he slept with her the night before and back then consenting once meant consent until you verbally say no.
He even said himself in Ebony that if he did what he did today, he'd be in jail.

Sir Nate Parker, please make more movies like this one. I too had no idea about this man and I was moved beyond words, beyond tears while watching this film. I was overcome with so many emotions, anger being the dominant one, but this film and more like it are essential. Anger is not always a bad thing, we need to get angry in order to get things done, to change wicked ways. Please keep bringing to light these horrific injustices Mr. Parker. Like you said we must never forget. Never. I humbly salute you Mr. Parker. May the Lord keep you in his good grace.

Thats a good question. I'm a conscious Blackman myself and i'm trying to figure that out. A lot of White mixed or light women come at me.

Does it really matter who someone is with? And think about this for a second. Black people consist of around 15% of the population. Look at education and notice that there aren't many black women at the top schools. Now look at the neighborhoods successful people live in. They're usually not full of black women. The odds aren't in those men's favor to meet black women. We encounter women of other races much more than we do our own.
Only dating within your race means making a decision to not even consider 85% of women in the US. Doesn't that sound ridiculous? And what are you really left with when you cut out that large chunk of women? I'm sure there are other requirements most won't have. The percentage of potential women you're willing to date are probably in the single digits at that point. And it's not just about how they fit your preferences. You have to fit theirs as well. Dating solely within your race is extremely difficult.
And what exactly are they contradicting by being with a woman outside of their race? Who you date isn't a political statement. And remember that his wife supported him through the whole ordeal. She put a lot on the line too. She could've said it's better for us and the kids if you keep working rather than putting your savings into this movie and spending years trying to get funding. What more can someone ask for in a partner? Why is her race even a topic for discussion?

As a young black man watching this interview I am so inspired to just hearing this man speak I love Mr.Parkers message and I truly applaud him for his peristent with this film
I saw the movie opening day. I liked it, didn't love it, and I was fine with that, but I do think everyone should watch it because I did not know this story and I'm extremely happy I got to learn it. However, I find it hilarious that movie critics are labelling Nat an axe murderer, and saying the movie tries to make you have empathy for him, yet these people he killed were killing blacks in droves with no recourse. Also, I find it funny how a movie like this gets killed because of rape allegations against it's creator, but the presidential candidate can preach sexual assault and engage in it (randomly kissing women and groping them, having rape allegations as well), and people will still support him and characterize him as having the moral fiber to lead this country. Only in America.

Black women chose not to go opening weekend because of his stance on a rape he was charged with many years ago. We wanted to go! But he created this problem by not accepting responsibility for what happened in that situation. We like the story line, we love reclaiming the title, we don't like Nate Parker. We wish white people would do this to their horrible people, but they don't. They also don't take responsibility for them either sooo... I guess that makes sense.
The man was acquitted, against someone who had sex with previously and while I do not know what was true or not, you boycotting the movie has no implications for Parker at this point, as he already got his money. Hollywood should've took him to task when the film was released before giving him that record money, since that was where it would hurt the most. Hollywood still works with convicted rapists who run away, those who never even go to trial and such, so I would not equate Nate's case with the others. Again, I do not know the details because I wasn't there, but I do know that he himself was acquitted and how's he's dealt with the aftermath is troubling, but I saw the movie because of what it is. Hollywood could've bought it to kill it, no one knows, but if you take a stance against it, that is your prerogative because you might know more about his guilt more than I do.
Like you said, it is how he is dealing with it. I knew about the rape case a while ago and still supported his work. My personal view is that he should have shut up about it, but instead he picked very flattering journalists and media outlets to go to. It's just a bad look. We all have fallen short of the glory of God in one way or another.

An awesome awesome awesome film. Visually phenomenal, written superbly, acting brilliance. Saw it with my 10 and 12 year old sons and they LOVED it.
The theater we saw it in had it in the very last theater, in the back. Purposely so I'm sure.
