GREENVILLE, SC: Why is everyone moving here?!

  • Join Kurt & Sara as we travel an hour and a half south of Asheville, NC to the beautiful city of Greenville, South Carolina! We happen to visit during the Fall for Greenville festival, and get to enjoy the fun street fair while exploring downtown Greenville, SC. While we visit different shops and restaurants and walk to the very cool Falls Park on the Reedy just off the main street, we discuss some of the main reasons why people are moving to Greenville, SC. Sara faces her fear of heights while traversing the amazing bridge that spans the river and waterfall. All this and more, right in downtown Greenville, South Carolina!

I've lived in the Greenville area my whole life and love it! I am NOT one of these rude people that tell others not to move here. The more people that can enjoy this area, the better! This is a very beautiful area and for the most part the people are great! You guys did a great job with this video!

Greenville is beautiful and we have been here 3 years and like it very much. Every time I see a video about how great Greenville is, a small minority will always chime in to say Yankees go home or some such. However, nobody minds all the jobs and cash for beautification and development all these new people and companies bring in. Most are companies coming in from the north or Europe or Asia, etc. I haven't met a single person in three years who hasn't been kind to us or happy with the transformed economy and development in the area. Everyone we have met has been welcoming and represents southern hospitality for sure. We have an excellent mayor and council who work hard to help Greenville grow in a beautiful, planned way. I have a theory that most people who opt to move to the south are looking for the laid back, open, friendly southern atmosphere so they fit in just fine just as a southerner who wants to move to NYC wants that lifestyle for themselves. Thanks for this great video. All the bst.

Thanks so much for the wonderful, thoughtful comment, Ellie. It's so good to get an inside perspective on the areas we visit and its so nice to hear about all the good things going on in Greenville. We totally agree that most people who move to the south aren't looking to change things but want to live with all the nice people and have that friendly, open living experience. That's why we did it, lol.
Enjoy that beautiful city you live in and thank you so much for watching our video, we really appreciate it!
All the best to you as well!

Can you tell what area in Greenville, SC that is affordable and low crime? It's a landlords market here in Florida. Have to get out of Florida as I'm not going to make it here. Thx. Seven year wait for low income one bedroom Apts. Lots of waiting lists. Can't believe it.

Hello guys! I am happy to say that I was born here, in Greenville SC. They have put a lot of focus in the downtown area ans it's beautiful year round. Yes, we get snow, no, not as much as our Northern neighbors. We actually do have 4 seasons, no hurricane worries, the occasional tornado (with bad weather), a few hrs from the beach, an hour from the mountains (Paris Mountain, Ceasars head, not too much further to the Blueridge mountains.) There is a great job market here and I am constantly seeing new places to live... houses, townhouses, apartments and condos, even tiny home communities.

Moved here in Jan 2020, bar none, the best small city in the entire South. And it’s just getting better. The mayor and planning commission are continually adding new things that smart moves. Real Estate isn’t cheap though. Greenville is one of the hottest markets in the country and deservedly so. But downtown real estate is every bit CA pricing. Good thing is you can live 10 minutes out for decent pricing. But make your move soon.
In all honesty, NC is a prettier state overall, but Greenville is the best city in the Carolinas and doesn’t take long to get to NC. Check out Vault and Valor!

Hey y’all! I love your videos, so I subscribed. We used to live in Greenville (well, more accurately, Travelers Rest). We absolutely loved everything about it. The location between Atlanta and Charlotte! The proximity to the mountains! Coffee Underground! Soby’s! Falls Park and the Liberty Bridge! Greenville Drive games at Fluor Field! Fall for Greenville! Artisphere! The Swamp Rabbit Trail! Falls Park on the Reedy River! Cleveland Park and the Greenville Zoo! Downtown! Mast General Store and O.P. Taylor’s Toys! We moved away in 2009 due to a layoff and spent a few years in Charleston. We now live in Denver, Colorado…but we’re planning to visit Greenville again in September, so we’re watching some videos to see how things have changed (and how they haven’t). We’re actually now talking about moving back. We’ll see how things go! Thanks for the great videos!

I grew up in Greenville in the mid to late 1970’s. Greenville was transitioning from being the self proclaimed “Textile Capital of the World” to the high tech and manufacturing economy it enjoys today. When I lived there there wasn’t much reason to go downtown unless you were going to shop at the JC Penny that was on Main Street where all those restaurants and activities were going on. Or you went downtown to go to a concert or the circus at the old Memorial Coliseum. We had not clue there was a waterfall downtown because it was hidden by a viaduct for the road that brought you into downtown. I guess those beautiful trees along Main Street were just being planted today. Fast forward to today and Greenville has completely reinvented itself. It is a destination and a great place to live. I have told my wife that I would be willing to retire there as long as we lived somewhere within walking distance of downtown and not out in the suburbs.
A couple of other places that I like to recommend is to go out to Furman University and walk one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen. It is just across from Paris Mountain. Also the Swamp Rabbit Trail which you were walking in for a bit is a 20+ mile trial that runs from Travelers Rest through the Furman Campus and downtown to a good ways southeast of Town. You can hike or ride bikes. The last time I was there I took my son to the zoo at Cleveland Park and then we took the trailer to walk the mile or two to the Falls Park. It goes by the Augusta Road area which has some classic Beautiful early 20th century homes. It reminds me of Buckhead or the Piedmont Park area of
Atlanta. At least as far as the homes and architecture. I love Greenville!

I walk downtown during my lunch breaks. I thought I'd be brave and walk across the bridge one day and it just so happened the Harlem Globe Trotters were in town. They were on the bridge jumping and bouncing basketballs. Looking back I wish I had taken pictures but I was so scared of the bridge that I felt I was about to pass out! We stayed in the only room left the top presidential suite. I look out the window next door was the old city police I'd watch them go in and out all day. Now you have to look up Table Rock State park then take the curvy road to Brevard. You really need to get used to windy roads and high climbing. Enjoy our Great State.

Please consider the fact that most crime in Greenville is targeted crime, not random crime. So if you get assaulted or murdered in Greenville it's likely someone was really angry with you vs. you being some random victim or a casualty of a drive-by shooting. Be nice and sensible, and you won't experience crime.

If you think your typical city or town in the USA looks like Greenville, you must not have seen very many towns. The newcomers moving to Greenville are generally educated and/or skilled and are contributing to the area's economy and that's why the city can afford to keep up with its landscaping and beautification, and why there are so many restaurants that can stay open. If the city was quieter and less busy, there would be vacant retail spaces and then the city would look half-dead like most other cities in the USA. Hopefully, Greenville will continue to increase the population density of the city's core, as it is much more environmentally friendly and sustainable to have densely packed city-dwellers walking and biking to work than for everyone to be living out in the suburbs and being reliant upon their vehicle for everything. And of course, the more densely packed the population, the more possible it is for Greenville to keep its parks and forests natural and not turn these beautiful areas into unsightly suburban sprawl and subdivisions which is the blight across our entire country.

In general, people in the USA have become more angry and frustrated and are less pleasant and easygoing than they used to be. This trend is across the entire country and is not isolated to Greenville. I see this all over the USA no matter where I travel....... except when I go to Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. But then again, the residents in that area have so much wealth that they are not plagued with financial difficulties.

Very nice video, but Sara does not need to worry about high bridges at all. Instead, the fear should be falling off of low bridges and from low heights. Falls from low heights, 10', 20' or 30' feet, are what leave you in great pain and with the potential for long-lasting injuries that you have to suffer with for years. Falls from greater heights provide a painless immediate transition from being alive to being dead with no suffering at all. That's why I am a lot more fearful of falling off the roof of my house than falling off the Empire State Building. Just something to consider.
