Our mini Schnauzer escaped our yard unsupervised, after a visitor had left the gate open. We only realized, when we got a call from our vet across the street, if we knew, where our dog was. Poor baby got hit by a faster than allowed going car. And the vet heard her cry, and went out to investigate, when our limping badly girl came towards the vet office.
One of her nails was ripped and she had a tear in her lung. We were advised to put her into a very confined space for her lung to properly heal. Keeping our hyperactive, constantly moving girl calm was hard on us all. She healed properly and never left our property alone after this, and stopped doing, whatever she was doing, when she heard car engines revv up.
She got to live happy almost 20 years, only being teased by our bunny who loved nibbling her toes until the dog got fed up and a game of chase ensued. They did not know, they were supposed hunter and prey, they were just friends who annoyed each other once in a while.

You and your team are heroes for your dedication to animals. None of the vets in my area make house calls or would rush to the scene of an injured pet. Because of you and your amazing team, this kitty survived. More vets should be like you.

Beautiful blue points on that lovely cat! Now, if only her owner will learn from this and keep the cat safe! Train the cat to walk in a harness andtakeherforwalks, build a safe catio for her if you can afford it, and don't let her roam. It's just too dangerous out there for pets!

Yeah, but we don’t know what else she had going on - like maybe needing to pick up children, or be there when they got home from school. Maybe she had her own doctor appt to get to. We just can’t know. We do know she consented to treat her cat, and seemed very concerned about her… those are the important things!

My cat Sox is now 14+. For most of his life, he only ever went out on a harness. He was never interested in going past the property but loved spending time on the grass. We created a catrun for him and his younger siblings. We now have 6 foot high Colourbond metal fences enclosing the back yard. While we don't trust the youngsters out of the catrun, we know that Sox will not leave the back yard and he now has a bigger place to explore.

Keep cats inside and they won't get hurt. I know a lot of people think it's ok for a cat to be outside but think of all of the dangers. Getting hit by a car or attacked by something, depending on where you live, like a dog even a coyote or, a snake for instance.. Even dogs aren't safe especially little dogs. Big dogs can be hit by a car.. It's better to be safe than to lose your pet. God bless.

I keep my cats indoors. But growing up my mum had outdoor cats. We adopted them and the RSPCA (Australia) told us they were outdoor cats and my mum is allergic to cats. My mum lives on a quiet street with a huge block of land. When they changed the cat curfew to 24 hours a day, it would have been cruel to keep them inside after 15+ years of being outdoors only. After I moved out and got my own cats, I have kept them indoors only. I agree that cats should be kept indoors but it's not as simple as that. Once they get the taste of the outdoors, it is really hard to keep them in. I think everyone should keep them inside from a very young age and never let them out ever. But for cats that are 10+ years old, used to being outdoors all the time, it is a very stressful change for them.

@bethanylightowler6436 Maybe that's true. But what keeps them from being hit by a vehicle or get in a fight with another cat or two? Then there's always coyotes or even mountain lions of course that depends on where you live. As I said in my comment. You never know what will happen to your cats. Maybe they should have a safe place to be outside, like a dog house they could get into to be in during bad weather. Maybe a dog door or should I say a cat door would be good. God bless.

Well, the controversy continues. Over many decades my home and yard has become a sanctuary for some wonderful felines. I have loved, cared for and cherished them all. All of them were mature cats when they invited themselves into my life. All of them appeared to be abandoned or dropped into this neighborhood. All of them eventually became “my” cats. I never had more than three at one time. Two of my precious cats died this year, both old timers. I miss them as I would a dearest child. Sadly I am too old to have another cat. If you are blessed with a feline friend, treat it well and bask in the love and trust that cat bestowed on you.

It's quite bizarre, I know it's common in the US to have entirely indoor cats but in the UK letting cats roam outdoors is normal. I remember mentioning the concept of keeping indoor cats to my mum and she felt keeping them indoors at all times was unethical. And in a way I got her point, cats love to roam and explore for hours. Which is a lot harder to recreate indoors, even with secure outdoor areas. I guess as you say, it entirely depends on how busy an area is. As living beside the road in a rural area is very different to living beside one in the city or even on a motorway etc.

A number of animal charities that rehome cats won't let them go to ones where they don't or won't have access to a garden or outdoors.
My cats have always chosen to go outside as and when they want to, when I had five cats, there would be a changeover in the morning. Those ghat were indoors overnight went out and those that had been out hunting overnight came in to sleep during the day.
Now I just feed the ferals everyday, they have all been neutered which was done in conjunction with Mayhew Animal Home a few years ago.

No, I don’t think so - she’s cuddling the cat, and looks close to tears right before they put the cat in the carrier. I think she was probably just in a little bit of shock, too. If she really wasn’t bothered, she wouldn’t have let them in and film, or take the cat. (It’s also very possible that they spoke with the owner and checked the cat before asking if they could film, and the owner just isn’t a very good actress!)

The vets I have interacted with (in the US) are very kind, generous animal people who would probably do this if they were asked to /had time to (finding a cat is more of an animal control issue) (though very few vets have the luxury to do house calls, there is a massive vet shortage in the US) ....

Hard to imagine such a light car hit, but people there likely don't drive like most of the places I've lived.
Something of note for the video, it feels a bit too 'produced'. I'm sure most people don't think about it, but when your people got the news and then mention needing to head out ASAP, they then stop, let the camera guy go outside and set up so they can do an exiting the building shot. That screams overproduced and in the worst light looks careless on your behalf because your wasting time that you've just stated you can't afford to waste.
I'm sure that a shaky cam style video looks low quality and unprofessional but I think your professionalism in your job and love of animals should be the most important thing showcased. Don't let video production take away from doing the best work you can do.

In Australia it's unheard of for a vet to go chasing injured animals.

I never had cats when I lived in England, but I've adopted quite a number of them since I've been in the USA. Somebody please tell me, I had heard that when you adopt cats in England you must allow them to have access to the outside. Is that correct? My adopted cats here in the States are all snipped and chipped and they only go outside in my screened in porch with me there the entire time.

All cats are chipped by law in UK, and out and about if that is the what the cat wants.

I live in the UK and have always had cats, they go in and out as they wish. It's a safe country, only cars and dogs as dangers. My 2 would hate to be shut in and unable to dig and hunt in the garden. I agree if I lived in a city or by a busy road I would think twice about letting a cat out.

Not one person has brought to light the cats that are killed and maimed by dogs, having worked for a Vet years ago, I can assure you, it is quite common.
My own cats including the current one who was feral, just love their "own kingdom" inside, you keep them stimulated etc, and know they are safe.

You're funny! I grew up in England but I was born in the United States, and I've been teaching myself Spanish!!! And I am just flabbergasted about how quickly Spanish is spoken!!! I do have an edge with the British dialects though because my mom/mum is from Nottingham England!!

People think they are doing to right thing letting their cats out and sbout. Could not be further from the truth.
If you love your cats PLEASE KEEP THEM INDOORS. Outdoor cats are hit be cars, poisoned, and shot, suffering a painful desth. How can you say you love your cats and put them in this kind of dange. SHAME ON YOU

Cats vs cars would be less common if people would keep their cats indoors...🙄 It drives me crazy that people don't get that. Look at the trauma it would save their poor cats...

That is a never ending discussion. I have had a lot of cats in my life and they were indoors cats. And then I rescued 3 cats in a row that I had to let go outside because their feral genes remained too strong. But they were trained to come inside when the night came. I still prefer indoors cats because it is safer and much less stressful for me but it showed me to never judge because we don’t have the whole stories. Each is unique.

@@sibylle_p This!! As someone who also has had cats his entire life, but mainly rescues, absolutely this!
If you can, easiest with kittens ofc, teach them to be indoors. But if you cannot, try to make your house & garden so much fun and safe that they stay close and ALWAYS make a routine of feeding them the best food you can at night and lock the (cat)doors indeed.
And most importantly, teach but do not judge ppl ❤

@@betagombar9022 I gave all my cats their best possible life. One rescue I had simply retired when a saved him and never wanted to go out except on my deck. Another one that came to my door on a cold snowy winter day and who was in a terrible shape is simply afraid of outdoors. Never judge.

In the UK it's actually considered cruel for a cat to not be allowed to roam. I personally don't allow my kitten outside unless she is on a leash or in a carrier.
