You are so right about Sabre being adorable. He was just terrified, obviously from a previous trauma. The poor kitty. You gave it your all & nobody could ask more. If they do, they're wrong. Since he's a scottish fold, he probably is in pain. There are a lot of scottish fold cats in the shelters where I live, even though it is illegal to breed them here in Germany. The scottish fold is considered a Qualzucht which roughly translates to agony or torture breed. The folded ears are the result of a genetic defect of the cartilage called Osteochondrodysplasia. The cartilage throughout the body get's destroyed and causes painful changes in the joints, so the legs, vertebra and even the tail hurt with every movement and even touching or petting them becomes very painful which might cause aggression. These cats need pain medication from an early age and need a lot of veterinary attention.
Breeding like this, pugs, etc, should be outlawed in this day an age. The fact that humans can condemn these animals to lifetimes of issues and suffering, because it looks nice, shows how sick our society has been. These are living beings, not your decorations. But conspicous consumption...
Wow! I didn't know this. Thank you for infoming us about this. I have four cats (shelter adopted) and i love them with everything in me. Its crazy to me that people are unknowingly breeding such a cat. So so sad. Poor sweet babies!
and pain killers!! folds lack a lot of their cartilage and are in immense pain a lot of their life, unfortunatly the same mutation that causes those ears distrups all the cartalidge in them
With the over-feeding comments - one day of overindulgence is not going to hurt an animal. If it keeps them calm so a necessary thing gets done without them having to go to the vet to get it done under anesthesia then that’s a good thing. Also, I’d love to see what these people eat on Thanksgiving or other holidays they celebrate…
People are actually complaining about that?! We had to give my dog a lot of treats and peanut butter to get blood drawn. It's fine as long as its not every day. People are nuts.
Btw, a rescue I adopted from also gave the advice to give sick cats kitten food if that's the only thing they'll eat. Yeah, it's high in calorie but it's better than if they don't eat anything at all.
We have to give my kitty with kidney disease, subQ fluids twice a week. We go through 4 Churus per session. Distraction works really well. And food treats are great distractions.
As a healthcare worker, yes, cat bites are extremely dangerous at times. As you said because of the curve of their teeth, they can bite really deep without you realizing it. Saber looks like a very wonderful cat and it’s probably something that I would have adopted if I was local, but since I am in Southern Arizona. That’s not feasible.. You do a great service for your community and I enjoy watching all of your videos. Take care and God bless.
In in my 50s and feel lucky to be alive after reading these comments. Not sure there's been a time in my life i haven't had a cat. Plenty of scratches and a few bites. No problem with my current rescue. He's missing all but 2 tiny teeth and some ding dong had him declawed x4. He came with the house i bought and was living outside until he got sick.
I worked at a hospital as a unit clerk/monitor tech. We had a gentleman that snatched a blind and deaf cat from the middle of the street. As you might imagine, he got a serious bite in his hand. He had to have an irrigation and debridement surgery. Cat bites to the hand are very serious due to the complexity of small joints and tendons. The man completely recovered by the way.
@@woodstream6137 I’m glad you are taking care of him. When I moved onto my property here in southern Arizona there were several cats in the neighborhood running around and I have wound up with a lot of barn cats.
I got bitten by one of my cats when we took him to the vet for an injury on his back. The vet wanted to shave around the wound and that was the final stre for my poor guy, so he bit me to get me to let him go so he could hide. Fortunately the bite wounds weren't too deep so I was able to avoid hospitalization by thouroughly washing the wound and getting antibiotics from urgent care to make sure an infection didn't develop. I scar pretty easily so I had several little dots on my wrist for a while despite taking very good care with washing and bandaging the bite but I'm honestly fine with that because I know there are people who have to deal with so much worse than just a couple little scars.
I saw a kitten on the side of a freeway trapped by a noise wall when I was visiting family years ago... Managed to catch him but I didn't have thick gloves or anything else except a hoodie. I used that to cover and grab them but she still managed to get both of her canines into my hand and bite really hard. Got her to a shelter, went to an emergency clinic, and while I didn't swell up super bad I still got a bit of a fever that knocked me out for a day. Amoxicillan kept infection away and I was fine, save for having a "vampire bite" scar on my hand that has faded except for one pucture wound point. It's healed but there's a nodule of scar tissue there. Thankfully no tendons or vessels got hit. The kitten ended up being too old to be adopted by the shelter I took her to, and they said they put her in a warehouse cat program... Really hoping they didn't just euthanize her, considering how terrifying it was to catch her. She bolted and nearly ran into traffic twice. I didn't have a place I could keep her or a means for her to travel with me back to my home state at the time either.
I got bit by our cat …I tried to break up a cat fight . Seven days in the hospital and became septic . Please be careful. Yes we kept Boo ( our cat ). It was my fault .

It's really sad that people blame themselves instead of blaming the animal and having them put down, if needed. People are more important than animals!

He may have belonged to someone who passed away - one of my cats came from an elderly lady who died suddenly, and he was very depressed for months. It was a long road, but now he's my snuggle monster. So not always a case of giving up. :) x

We adopted a Scottish Fold from our local shelter before! He was also labeled aggressive and shaved in a lion cut. It took him awhile to finally adjust to us but he ended up being a great cat! I hope Saber finds a great home as well ❤
I wonder, if its because hes in pain? I heard scottish folds can be in a lot of pain due to the way they're bred... i hope thats not the case and im completely wrong. I'm afraid that's very likely the case. Because those folded ears are caused by a genetic disorder (osteochondrodysplasia) that affects all cartilage and connective tissues. And while people might think folded ears are cute, what they don't see the issues it causes on the inside to the skeleton and joints.
Yeah, in my country, breeding certain cat and dog breeds (including Scottish Folds) has been made illegal. People can still own them, but the breeding is no longer allowed. (Irresponsible/selfish owners who don't care and only shop for looks will still be able to get new kittens from foreign countries or illegal backyard breeders/mills, but then they really need to be specifically ignoring the ban). For the Folds, it's because the gene causing the weak cartilage, which is why their ears fold, oftentimes also negatively affects other cartilage in their skeletons, causing pain and health issues and may even require being put down at a young age. They are considered an "agony breed", aka their mere existence causes them pain and agony, like Pugs, certain Chihuahuas, French Bulldog, Sphynx cats, but also the breeding of white cats with blue eyes (due to them usually ending up deaf). A lot of other "modern" versions of established breeds (like German Shepherds, Dachshunds, St. Bernard's, Persians etc.) are also frowned upon due to health issues being bred into their lines for the sake of looks.
@@Windmelodie Exactly this. Needs to be outlawed, and people are just so ignorant that they continue this trend of animals being bred into lives of suffering just for the aesthetic tastes of the purchasers.
Cats can have a very subtle way of showing when it becomes too much and it happens to the best of us that we don't see the warning signs. Even cats that are giving headbutts and are very "social" can turn and become aggressive and to the unseen eye it would come out of nowhere. Signs to look out for when a cat shows subtle signs are: pulling the hair on their back ( almost as if they have an itch there), dilating or retracting of pupils, the hairs in the middle of their back standing up (like a tiny back mohawk), extreme marking/headbutting, ears back or halfway (airplane mode), fast tail whipping. The one i personally saw most at the shelter with the more difficult to notice cases were the signs on their back. Just wanted to share some of my expertise/knowledge and hoping I can help prevent some injuries and create a few less stressors for a cat owner and their cat!
That's our silver tabby at all times - lol. Lucky for us, she's only grumpy and not aggressive, and she's tiny. She looks a lot like this kitty, complete with pout.
My cat has the mohawk/ridgeback thing going pretty often. I'd never seen it before in a cat. However, my cat is 100% an angel all of the time. Never once has she hissed, swatted, or bitten, no matter what we've had to do to her. She is currently on chemo and steroids and she HATES the steroids--they taste yucky--but she is never mean about getting her meds. She rolls over and demands belly pets, in fact. She cries to be picked up and held. She comes when you call her or even if you're just talking to her across the room. She knows when one of her humans is upset and will comfort us like a dog would. Her emotional intelligence is through the roof. I've never seen anything like it. She hears a bedroom door open and comes running to greet you. We got her from a rescue when she was about 6 and it's one of the best decisions we ever made. (That's my plug for adopting an adult cat.) Poor girl was at that rescue probably 3-4 months and I feel so lucky we were the ones to take her home. I don't think we'll ever have a cat this wonderful again. I'm not sure another cat this amazing exists.
Thank you for giving him the time he needed throughout your groom, and your attempt to adopt him is icing on the cake. You didn't send him back to the same situation, you helped him in so many ways while he was with you. You gave him time, you worked on his social skills and best of all you can give a full report to the shelter and so to his new owner and that all gives him the very best chance in his furever home. You're such a legend

Bravo for taking care of this troubled cat! My daughter and her fiancée adopted a troubled cat and after trying to understand her needs ( being scratched many times) and many months training (for both of them and the cat) it became a very successful and loving relationship! If owners are willing to spend a lot of time and patience it can work out for everyone! 😊
I’ve noticed that dog parents don’t read cat body language well unless they’ve spent enough time living with cats. There was probably a thousand different warning signs leading up to that bite, but here’s something I also discovered the hard way: A LOT of male cats hate having their lower back or butt scratched. Some may start to arch their back and twitch because it’s overstimulating. Female cats after they reach a certain age may enjoy it, or at least tolerate it.
In cats and dogs, there is what might be considered a "little sub-brain" at the tail base. It's not a good idea to scratch either animal too much there. Its kind of like tickling and massaging someone's feet at the same time. You can easily overdo it.
That poor cat was absolutely terrified. Hope he gets adopted into a home where he never feels that way again. Every little movement he made in the beginning broke my heart. I hope whoever surrendered him was not abusive but could no longer take care of him and did what they thought was best for him in the long term. Poor Saber.
I empathize with Vanessa completely. That's how I met my adopted cat, Oscar. He's 12 now. An amazing black cat. When I went to the shelter to get a friend for my other cat I went in to pet him the wrong way and he let me know it by biting me. It was totally my fault. I wound up having to go on an antibiotic because the bite got infected. He never bit me again. It's wonderful when humans understand when things are their fault regarding animal behavior.
So sorry about your hand and very happy it has healed without issue. If I was local, I'd apply to adopt immediately. No other pets and he could have all the time he needs to figure out he would now be living his best life.
I am sorry you got bit, and I am sorry that Sabre has such an unknown past that getting to know him will be tricky. I sincerely hope that the person who does adopt him will have the patience it will take for him to learn about trust and human kindness.
And personal space. If a rich fool bought him as a kitten and got bored the same day and forgot about/ignored him. Thats what he looks like. No love. Poor boy😢.
@@Crow_Friend hes most likly just in pain, folds are in pain from very youg ages due to having litlle cartialidge (its what causes the folded ears but also highly painfull arthirtis)

W.I.W.A.K. our neighbor had some marital problems, and the associated drinking problems (chicken/egg...whatever...) that resulted in their kids recreating with suboptimal levels of adult supervision...the fact that 2 of the kids might* have had ADHD, didn't help...the 3 year-old girl used to try to 'hammer throw' their cat by the tail! 😮😢😠 *(I am just guessing: it was the 70's; and I was 10, but, after ~50 years of life and observing people, it would be fairly consistent...) ❤😻😍
Good thing you went to the ER. Cat bites can get infected really, really easily. You need antibiotics whenever you're bitten by a cat. Poor cat, to be so frightened.
Had 3 cats in my life. Was bitten a lot and sometimes by street cats, never had an issue at all. I hear about people being scared of cat bites and from this groomer too, but never ever anyone in my life had a problem with cat bites. I live in a country where we do not have rabies, maybe that's why.
@@Guest-mx8or There's an assumption cat bites and scratches deliver higher bacterial load than dogs, but I remember reading a paper that says they both carry as much as each other and another srticle stating cat inflicted wounds seem worse because less people tske them seriously compared to dog inflicted wounds.
@@Guest-mx8orEven with rabies they tend to have nasty bacteria in their mouth. It's better to go to the doctor beforehand signs of information because these infections can get really bad really quickly, like within hours.
PSA about purebred cats. Reputable breeders require new owners to sign a contract stating the cat must be returned to the breeder if the owner no longer can take care of that cat. Backyard breeders won't require that, which is likely how this poor scottish fold was surrendered. Adopt, don't shop, but if you *must* shop, support responsible breeding programs!
I mean... Somebody could just not abide by the contract. Altho I agree with the sentiment, but in this case, I really don't understand wanting a cat that will have malformed ears and cartilage problems due to ✨ aesthetic✨.
Imma be blunt. Doodles have allergy issues with skin, food, and they have ear hair issues, all of them come from highly bred poodles and all other poodles.... I've wanted to look for a poodle for a service dog for years, and every single breeder that breeds pure poodles with pedigrees and contracts still has to say they'll have all the issues seen in doodles. They as a breed, can be far more neurotic than a lot of other breeds as well, so the behavioral issues are in even well bred poodles and are up to owners and breeders to condition better behaviors. German shepherds that are pure bred, and belgion malinois, are both two breeds that also tend to be bred to show off their unique characteristics physically even when the breeders are club certified, following all protocols, etc. They are often adopted to people who don't have experience with the breed, even by breeders highly recognized by their clubs. Reputable breeders, and reputable clubs, would be actively putting many breeds back into a pool to bring in other healthier breeds to help bring back the health of the breeds. Such as breeding out wide hips and shoulders, breeding out excessively low hip posture, breeding out flattened faces, breeding out excessive wrinkles, etc. Breeders who breed intentionally things like painful traits like flat faces, wide hips and shoulders, and who intentionally breed cats with the same traits are no better than backyard breeders.
I just saw a post on Instagram going over the Embark results for a rescue Weimaraner and they found out she came from a reputable breeder of hunting Weims but she was still given to a shelter. Just because there's a contract doesn't mean people will abide by it. They should, but it's idealistic to think everyone would.

the problem is, do the breeders have the funding to go after a breach of contract case? I'm guessing the answer in most cases is likely 'no', the contract is mostly there to make the implication that it COULD happen.
I'm thinking this poor boy might be in pain on top of the fear. It's been found that the gene that causes the folded ears also causes Scottish Folds to develop arthritis much, much sooner than other breeds (many places have banned breeding them due to this). I'm guessing that the bite was out of pain from having his back touched, not fear/aggression, and he'll probably be an absolute sweetheart with the right vet care!

I have never felt so sad in connection to watching one of your videos. That had to be traumatizing for you. I don't think it was your fault at all. I can tell that you really wanted it to work out and was building a bond with Saber. Also, you gave anyone interested in adopting him some very valuable information. Sometimes in spite of all of our efforts, things don't work out as planned and, in those moments, we must give ourselves and others, grace. Glad your hand is healing well, take care!

He is a beautiful cat and I think you are correct about his background. The poor guy does need a chance in a quiet house to relax and learn he is safe. I worked many years with vets and have been selected by the cat distribution system to adopt several over the years. Cat bites should always be taken seriously, one of my vets told about getting bit or scratched by a tiger cub when he was younger and winding up in the hospital with a severe infection. I wish I was closed so I could adopt this lovely cat. He needs to be neutered and then a quiet forever home. Good luck and thank you for sharing.
Vanessa, I’m so sorry to read that you went to the hospital due to a cat encounter. My bff was a vet tech for 25+ years and said she always went to get an antibiotic Rx whenever she got bit by a cat because of the way a cat bite seals totally up, holding all the bacteria in, unlike a dog’s bite. I am a big fan of the new space bubble helmet. I always felt the holes in the clear one were too small for good carbon dioxide to oxygen exchange. Although none of the cats ever seemed to grow lethargic. I wish you a speedy recovery. We love your content.

Thanks to your channel, I successfully gave my 9 year old cat her first oatmeal bath (she has pretty bad dermatitis and her vet has already given the go-ahead on baths). Thank you for your videos because following your example helped our kitty have a very calm first bath time and she was so incredibly grateful for the relief it gave her skin.
He might not like that very much. Scottish folds have cartilage issues and most develop arthritis very early so picking him up could cause severe pain. Might be why he's grumpy. Breeding these cats is just cruelty

I did not know this… I don,t know anything about Scottish folds to be honest… I have always had domestic long hairs or short hairs, Maine Coons and siamese cats… As for this particular kitty, I still want to just love him… but if he has those problems, I would just simply stroke him gently…but if he didn’t like that, I would,let him be and love him from afar :)
One of my cats years ago got her paw caught in an old wood window that slipped and dropped on her paw (paw was fine, btw, thank goodness!) She was dangling though when it got caught, I shoved one hand under her to hold her butt up while using the other to try and open the window. I got clawed and bit REAL bad - ironically the same place as in the picture Vanessa shows! First time I ever ended up on IV meds... To this day I never blamed my poor Silver, I even held her after despite letting my hand bleed and told her it was okay, she was okay.
I cannot imagine what his previous home situation was like. It is obvious he has not been socialized and is very fearful and not being neutered tends to make them a little more aggressive anyway.. you were so kind and gentle with him and he looks so much better and I'm sure he feels better too. Somewhere out there is the perfect person for him and I hope that he finds that person because he deserves a loving home. Thank you for taking the time he needed. You are a cat angel 😽
I had a kitty named Zub. He hated rectal thermometers. I took Zub to an old vet for a check-up, warning him in advance. The vet said, "Son, I've been handling cats since before you were born." He put Zub's head under his arm holding him by the tail and inserted the thermometer. Zub did a "somersault" and sunk his teeth deep into the vet's hand. That ended the check-up!

My cat was feral as a kitten and shuts down like Sabre at every vet visit and whenever there are changes to routine. He also will not stay in the house unless I'm in. He's very affectionate now, but it takes a lot of patience because human instinct is to approach and feline instinct is to flee. You have to let them dictate their limits and then respect them. Totally worth it, though. Its just fear that brings out aggression. Hope he finds his forever home. Thanks to Vanessa for showing him.

I'm really glad you're okay! Saw the photos and was alarmed at how quickly it puffed up. I've been around cats most of my life and never been bitten by one, so I had no idea how fast it can get ugly. Hopefully Sabre can get a perfect home, my heart breaks for the poor little baby, seeing how shut down and sad and scared he is. Poor boy needs a proverbial hug so bad.
Glad you're ok from the bite. 17 hours waiting for treatment? WOW! After you mentioned it in the video I did some thinking about all the cats I've had in my life (over 15 of them) and none of them ever bit me. They scratched and swatted and growled...but somehow I never got bit (and hope to never get bit). Most of the scratches were during claw trimming...and probably my fault for not securing the cat properly and maybe a couple times cutting too close to the quick. Hope Sabre gets adopted soon! I suspect under all that is a cool cat just waiting to give and get some good loving from the right person(s)!

I have had three cats from shelters when one went to cat heaven I would get another, but although the first 2 were very loving. This current one is like a grenade. It can let you stroke her and wants to be picked up but a few minutes in and initially she would bite and get down. Eight years on she has mellowed and will just give you the stink eye and shuffle to let her down after maybe 10 minutes now. Still love her but she is such a drama Queen.
I love this cat. He's so adorable and he's going to be a fantastic best friend for someone. He's just got some stuff to work through, but don't we all. Can't get over how much he looked like Frieza in the helmet though lol. Wish things had worked out for him to stay with you, but I'm sure the perfect home for him will come along soon.

My daughters 4 year old cat that has known only a calm and loving life hid behind a pillow on her bed for months when we moved to a new house. He only left the pillow to eat and use the litter box during that time. I couldn't imagine how he would react if something happened to us and he ended up in a shelter.
He's obviously manageable with a good stable home. He got through the groom relatively well. I wish we were local (and didn't have 5 senior cats) because I would take him.
Damn poor baby. He definitely needs a peaceful and stable home that will show him unconditional love. He makes me want to adopt another cat. Since he's a scottish fold, he probably is in pain.
There are a lot of scottish fold cats in the shelters where I live, even though it is illegal to breed them here in Germany. The scottish fold is considered a Qualzucht which roughly translates to agony or torture breed. The folded ears are the result of a genetic defect of the cartilage called Osteochondrodysplasia. The cartilage throughout the body get's destroyed and causes painful changes in the joints, so the legs, vertebra and even the tail hurt with every movement and even touching or petting them becomes very painful which might cause aggression.
These cats need pain medication from an early age and need a lot of veterinary attention.

With the over-feeding comments - one day of overindulgence is not going to hurt an animal. If it keeps them calm so a necessary thing gets done without them having to go to the vet to get it done under anesthesia then that’s a good thing. Also, I’d love to see what these people eat on Thanksgiving or other holidays they celebrate…
People are actually complaining about that?! We had to give my dog a lot of treats and peanut butter to get blood drawn. It's fine as long as its not every day. People are nuts.
Btw, a rescue I adopted from also gave the advice to give sick cats kitten food if that's the only thing they'll eat. Yeah, it's high in calorie but it's better than if they don't eat anything at all.
for nail clipping i always gave treats before and after.
We have to give my kitty with kidney disease, subQ fluids twice a week. We go through 4 Churus per session. Distraction works really well. And food treats are great distractions.

As a healthcare worker, yes, cat bites are extremely dangerous at times. As you said because of the curve of their teeth, they can bite really deep without you realizing it. Saber looks like a very wonderful cat and it’s probably something that I would have adopted if I was local, but since I am in Southern Arizona. That’s not feasible.. You do a great service for your community and I enjoy watching all of your videos. Take care and God bless.
In in my 50s and feel lucky to be alive after reading these comments. Not sure there's been a time in my life i haven't had a cat. Plenty of scratches and a few bites. No problem with my current rescue. He's missing all but 2 tiny teeth and some ding dong had him declawed x4. He came with the house i bought and was living outside until he got sick.
I worked at a hospital as a unit clerk/monitor tech. We had a gentleman that snatched a blind and deaf cat from the middle of the street. As you might imagine, he got a serious bite in his hand. He had to have an irrigation and debridement surgery. Cat bites to the hand are very serious due to the complexity of small joints and tendons. The man completely recovered by the way.
@@woodstream6137 I’m glad you are taking care of him. When I moved onto my property here in southern Arizona there were several cats in the neighborhood running around and I have wound up with a lot of barn cats.
I got bitten by one of my cats when we took him to the vet for an injury on his back. The vet wanted to shave around the wound and that was the final stre for my poor guy, so he bit me to get me to let him go so he could hide. Fortunately the bite wounds weren't too deep so I was able to avoid hospitalization by thouroughly washing the wound and getting antibiotics from urgent care to make sure an infection didn't develop. I scar pretty easily so I had several little dots on my wrist for a while despite taking very good care with washing and bandaging the bite but I'm honestly fine with that because I know there are people who have to deal with so much worse than just a couple little scars.
I saw a kitten on the side of a freeway trapped by a noise wall when I was visiting family years ago... Managed to catch him but I didn't have thick gloves or anything else except a hoodie. I used that to cover and grab them but she still managed to get both of her canines into my hand and bite really hard. Got her to a shelter, went to an emergency clinic, and while I didn't swell up super bad I still got a bit of a fever that knocked me out for a day. Amoxicillan kept infection away and I was fine, save for having a "vampire bite" scar on my hand that has faded except for one pucture wound point. It's healed but there's a nodule of scar tissue there. Thankfully no tendons or vessels got hit.
The kitten ended up being too old to be adopted by the shelter I took her to, and they said they put her in a warehouse cat program... Really hoping they didn't just euthanize her, considering how terrifying it was to catch her. She bolted and nearly ran into traffic twice. I didn't have a place I could keep her or a means for her to travel with me back to my home state at the time either.
I got bit by our cat …I tried to break up a cat fight . Seven days in the hospital and became septic . Please be careful. Yes we kept Boo ( our cat ). It was my fault .

He may have belonged to someone who passed away - one of my cats came from an elderly lady who died suddenly, and he was very depressed for months. It was a long road, but now he's my snuggle monster. So not always a case of giving up. :) x

Scottish fold cats have it rough. Their ears fold because they have less cartilage. They're prone to getting arthritis early in life because of that.
True, I wonder if he was more sensitive to pets/touch due to arthritis pain. I hope he gets adopted by someone who can manage that as he ages, he seems like a sweet boy ❤😢

We adopted a Scottish Fold from our local shelter before! He was also labeled aggressive and shaved in a lion cut. It took him awhile to finally adjust to us but he ended up being a great cat! I hope Saber finds a great home as well ❤

I'm afraid that's very likely the case. Because those folded ears are caused by a genetic disorder (osteochondrodysplasia) that affects all cartilage and connective tissues. And while people might think folded ears are cute, what they don't see the issues it causes on the inside to the skeleton and joints.
She fostered him, but ultimately decided not to adopt him.
She didn't keep him. She tried but it didn't work out so he is back up for adoption
Yeah, in my country, breeding certain cat and dog breeds (including Scottish Folds) has been made illegal. People can still own them, but the breeding is no longer allowed. (Irresponsible/selfish owners who don't care and only shop for looks will still be able to get new kittens from foreign countries or illegal backyard breeders/mills, but then they really need to be specifically ignoring the ban).
For the Folds, it's because the gene causing the weak cartilage, which is why their ears fold, oftentimes also negatively affects other cartilage in their skeletons, causing pain and health issues and may even require being put down at a young age. They are considered an "agony breed", aka their mere existence causes them pain and agony, like Pugs, certain Chihuahuas, French Bulldog, Sphynx cats, but also the breeding of white cats with blue eyes (due to them usually ending up deaf). A lot of other "modern" versions of established breeds (like German Shepherds, Dachshunds, St. Bernard's, Persians etc.) are also frowned upon due to health issues being bred into their lines for the sake of looks.

Cats can have a very subtle way of showing when it becomes too much and it happens to the best of us that we don't see the warning signs. Even cats that are giving headbutts and are very "social" can turn and become aggressive and to the unseen eye it would come out of nowhere. Signs to look out for when a cat shows subtle signs are: pulling the hair on their back ( almost as if they have an itch there), dilating or retracting of pupils, the hairs in the middle of their back standing up (like a tiny back mohawk), extreme marking/headbutting, ears back or halfway (airplane mode), fast tail whipping. The one i personally saw most at the shelter with the more difficult to notice cases were the signs on their back. Just wanted to share some of my expertise/knowledge and hoping I can help prevent some injuries and create a few less stressors for a cat owner and their cat!

My cat has the mohawk/ridgeback thing going pretty often. I'd never seen it before in a cat. However, my cat is 100% an angel all of the time. Never once has she hissed, swatted, or bitten, no matter what we've had to do to her.
She is currently on chemo and steroids and she HATES the steroids--they taste yucky--but she is never mean about getting her meds. She rolls over and demands belly pets, in fact. She cries to be picked up and held. She comes when you call her or even if you're just talking to her across the room. She knows when one of her humans is upset and will comfort us like a dog would. Her emotional intelligence is through the roof. I've never seen anything like it. She hears a bedroom door open and comes running to greet you.
We got her from a rescue when she was about 6 and it's one of the best decisions we ever made. (That's my plug for adopting an adult cat.) Poor girl was at that rescue probably 3-4 months and I feel so lucky we were the ones to take her home. I don't think we'll ever have a cat this wonderful again. I'm not sure another cat this amazing exists.
Thank you for giving him the time he needed throughout your groom, and your attempt to adopt him is icing on the cake. You didn't send him back to the same situation, you helped him in so many ways while he was with you. You gave him time, you worked on his social skills and best of all you can give a full report to the shelter and so to his new owner and that all gives him the very best chance in his furever home. You're such a legend

Bravo for taking care of this troubled cat! My daughter and her fiancée adopted a troubled cat and after trying to understand her needs ( being scratched many times) and many months training (for both of them and the cat) it became a very successful and loving relationship! If owners are willing to spend a lot of time and patience it can work out for everyone! 😊
I’ve noticed that dog parents don’t read cat body language well unless they’ve spent enough time living with cats. There was probably a thousand different warning signs leading up to that bite, but here’s something I also discovered the hard way:
A LOT of male cats hate having their lower back or butt scratched. Some may start to arch their back and twitch because it’s overstimulating. Female cats after they reach a certain age may enjoy it, or at least tolerate it.
In cats and dogs, there is what might be considered a "little sub-brain" at the tail base. It's not a good idea to scratch either animal too much there. Its kind of like tickling and massaging someone's feet at the same time. You can easily overdo it.
The point where you mentioned him not going crazy and he reacted like “oh, going crazy is an option?” But he contained himself.
That poor cat was absolutely terrified. Hope he gets adopted into a home where he never feels that way again. Every little movement he made in the beginning broke my heart. I hope whoever surrendered him was not abusive but could no longer take care of him and did what they thought was best for him in the long term.

I empathize with Vanessa completely. That's how I met my adopted cat, Oscar. He's 12 now. An amazing black cat. When I went to the shelter to get a friend for my other cat I went in to pet him the wrong way and he let me know it by biting me. It was totally my fault. I wound up having to go on an antibiotic because the bite got infected. He never bit me again. It's wonderful when humans understand when things are their fault regarding animal behavior.
So sorry about your hand and very happy it has healed without issue. If I was local, I'd apply to adopt immediately. No other pets and he could have all the time he needs to figure out he would now be living his best life.
I also think once he's neutered his temperament will improve and with time he would be a stellar pet.
I am sorry you got bit, and I am sorry that Sabre has such an unknown past that getting to know him will be tricky. I sincerely hope that the person who does adopt him will have the patience it will take for him to learn about trust and human kindness.

Good thing you went to the ER. Cat bites can get infected really, really easily. You need antibiotics whenever you're bitten by a cat. Poor cat, to be so frightened.
Had 3 cats in my life. Was bitten a lot and sometimes by street cats, never had an issue at all. I hear about people being scared of cat bites and from this groomer too, but never ever anyone in my life had a problem with cat bites. I live in a country where we do not have rabies, maybe that's why.

@@Guest-mx8or There's an assumption cat bites and scratches deliver higher bacterial load than dogs, but I remember reading a paper that says they both carry as much as each other and another srticle stating cat inflicted wounds seem worse because less people tske them seriously compared to dog inflicted wounds.

PSA about purebred cats. Reputable breeders require new owners to sign a contract stating the cat must be returned to the breeder if the owner no longer can take care of that cat. Backyard breeders won't require that, which is likely how this poor scottish fold was surrendered. Adopt, don't shop, but if you *must* shop, support responsible breeding programs!
I mean... Somebody could just not abide by the contract. Altho I agree with the sentiment, but in this case, I really don't understand wanting a cat that will have malformed ears and cartilage problems due to ✨ aesthetic✨.
Imma be blunt.
Doodles have allergy issues with skin, food, and they have ear hair issues, all of them come from highly bred poodles and all other poodles.... I've wanted to look for a poodle for a service dog for years, and every single breeder that breeds pure poodles with pedigrees and contracts still has to say they'll have all the issues seen in doodles. They as a breed, can be far more neurotic than a lot of other breeds as well, so the behavioral issues are in even well bred poodles and are up to owners and breeders to condition better behaviors.
German shepherds that are pure bred, and belgion malinois, are both two breeds that also tend to be bred to show off their unique characteristics physically even when the breeders are club certified, following all protocols, etc. They are often adopted to people who don't have experience with the breed, even by breeders highly recognized by their clubs.
Reputable breeders, and reputable clubs, would be actively putting many breeds back into a pool to bring in other healthier breeds to help bring back the health of the breeds. Such as breeding out wide hips and shoulders, breeding out excessively low hip posture, breeding out flattened faces, breeding out excessive wrinkles, etc.
Breeders who breed intentionally things like painful traits like flat faces, wide hips and shoulders, and who intentionally breed cats with the same traits are no better than backyard breeders.
I just saw a post on Instagram going over the Embark results for a rescue Weimaraner and they found out she came from a reputable breeder of hunting Weims but she was still given to a shelter. Just because there's a contract doesn't mean people will abide by it. They should, but it's idealistic to think everyone would.

the problem is, do the breeders have the funding to go after a breach of contract case? I'm guessing the answer in most cases is likely 'no', the contract is mostly there to make the implication that it COULD happen.
I'm thinking this poor boy might be in pain on top of the fear. It's been found that the gene that causes the folded ears also causes Scottish Folds to develop arthritis much, much sooner than other breeds (many places have banned breeding them due to this).
I'm guessing that the bite was out of pain from having his back touched, not fear/aggression, and he'll probably be an absolute sweetheart with the right vet care!

I have never felt so sad in connection to watching one of your videos. That had to be traumatizing for you. I don't think it was your fault at all. I can tell that you really wanted it to work out and was building a bond with Saber. Also, you gave anyone interested in adopting him some very valuable information. He is a beautiful cat and I think you are correct about his background. The poor guy does need a chance in a quiet house to relax and learn he is safe. I worked many years with vets and have been selected by the cat distribution system to adopt several over the years. Cat bites should always be taken seriously, one of my vets told about getting bit or scratched by a tiger cub when he was younger and winding up in the hospital with a severe infection. I wish I was closed so I could adopt this lovely cat. He needs to be neutered and then a quiet forever home. Good luck and thank you for sharing.

Vanessa, I’m so sorry to read that you went to the hospital due to a cat encounter. My bff was a vet tech for 25+ years and said she always went to get an antibiotic Rx whenever she got bit by a cat because of the way a cat bite seals totally up, holding all the bacteria in, unlike a dog’s bite. I am a big fan of the new space bubble helmet. I always felt the holes in the clear one were too small for good carbon dioxide to oxygen exchange. Although none of the cats ever seemed to grow lethargic. I wish you a speedy recovery. We love your content.

Thanks to your channel, I successfully gave my 9 year old cat her first oatmeal bath (she has pretty bad dermatitis and her vet has already given the go-ahead on baths). Thank you for your videos because following your example helped our kitty have a very calm first bath time and she was so incredibly grateful for the relief it gave her skin.

He might not like that very much. Scottish folds have cartilage issues and most develop arthritis very early so picking him up could cause severe pain. Might be why he's grumpy. Breeding these cats is just cruelty

One of my cats years ago got her paw caught in an old wood window that slipped and dropped on her paw (paw was fine, btw, thank goodness!) She was dangling though when it got caught, I shoved one hand under her to hold her butt up while using the other to try and open the window. I got clawed and bit REAL bad - ironically the same place as in the picture Vanessa shows! First time I ever ended up on IV meds...

I cannot imagine what his previous home situation was like. It is obvious he has not been socialized and is very fearful and not being neutered tends to make them a little more aggressive anyway.. you were so kind and gentle with him and he looks so much better and I'm sure he feels better too. Somewhere out there is the perfect person for him and I hope that he finds that person because he deserves a loving home. Thank you for taking the time he needed. You are a cat angel 😽

I had a kitty named Zub. He hated rectal thermometers.
I took Zub to an old vet for a check-up, warning him in advance. The vet said, "Son, I've been handling cats since before you were born." He put Zub's head under his arm holding him by the tail and inserted the thermometer. Zub did a "somersault" and sunk his teeth deep into the vet's hand. That ended the check-up!

My cat was feral as a kitten and shuts down like Sabre at every vet visit and whenever there are changes to routine. He also will not stay in the house unless I'm in. He's very affectionate now, but it takes a lot of patience because human instinct is to approach and feline instinct is to flee. You have to let them dictate their limits and then respect them. Totally worth it, though. Its just fear that brings out aggression. Hope he finds his forever home. Thanks to Vanessa for showing him.

I'm really glad you're okay! Saw the photos and was alarmed at how quickly it puffed up. I've been around cats most of my life and never been bitten by one, so I had no idea how fast it can get ugly.
Hopefully Sabre can get a perfect home, my heart breaks for the poor little baby, seeing how shut down and sad and scared he is. Poor boy needs a proverbial hug so bad.

Glad you're ok from the bite. 17 hours waiting for treatment? WOW! After you mentioned it in the video I did some thinking about all the cats I've had in my life (over 15 of them) and none of them ever bit me. They scratched and swatted and growled...but somehow I never got bit (and hope to never get bit). Most of the scratches were during claw trimming...and probably my fault for not securing the cat properly and maybe a couple times cutting too close to the quick. Hope Sabre gets adopted soon! I suspect under all that is a cool cat just waiting to give and get some good loving from the right person(s)!

I have had three cats from shelters when one went to cat heaven I would get another, but although the first 2 were very loving. This current one is like a grenade. It can let you stroke her and wants to be picked up but a few minutes in and initially she would bite and get down. Eight years on she has mellowed and will just give you the stink eye and shuffle to let her down after maybe 10 minutes now. Still love her but she is such a drama Queen.

I love this cat. He's so adorable and he's going to be a fantastic best friend for someone. He's just got some stuff to work through, but don't we all. Can't get over how much he looked like Frieza in the helmet though lol. Wish things had worked out for him to stay with you, but I'm sure the perfect home for him will come along soon.
Yeah not all the time it works out, I've also had a adoption fail a long time ago and it just wasn't for me, I'm sure someone else who can handle the situation will give him a good home, hope her bite didn't get infected 😮
I'm sure the right person and some painkillers will make him a wonderfull pet! folds are often in pain most thier life due to their weak cartalidge

Your patience in grooming him was clearly helping him take baby steps out of his shell.

My daughters 4 year old cat that has known only a calm and loving life hid behind a pillow on her bed for months when we moved to a new house. He only left the pillow to eat and use the litter box during that time. I couldn't imagine how he would react if something happened to us and he ended up in a shelter.
He's obviously manageable with a good stable home. He got through the groom relatively well. I wish we were local (and didn't have 5 senior cats) because I would take him.
This cat put mayonnaise and also creature to shame 😂

Damn poor baby. He definitely needs a peaceful and stable home that will show him unconditional love. He makes me want to adopt another cat. I already have one and I work from home, but I'd love a second as a playmate for my cat. She has one in my aunt's cat but we only visit once per week. Sad thing is that I can't afford a second cat. There are so many deserving pets in shelters and I wish I could help them all T.T
