When my fridge is so full I can't put a bowl in it, I put the salad and paper towels in a gallon size ziplock bag and then press out as much air as I can and zip it shut. Keeps the lettuce crisp, but takes up less space than a bowl.

My mother taught me to wash and dry garden lettuce leaves and wrap each leaf individually and lay them flat with paper towel on each side and then roll them and store them in ziplock bag in the fridge. Keeps garden lettuce good for a couple of weeks.

  • @EchoJ
    @EchoJ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +124

    I do this!
The “paper-towel trick” also works to prolong other veggies like cucumber and tomatoes. I don’t use a whole tomato or cucumber at once, so I wrap the part that would go into the fridge into a piece of paper towel and then it goes in a ziplock bag (press out as much air as you can prior to closing). Towel absorbs moisture and keeps them from getting mushy. Change out the paper towel when it’s saturated, and repeat. Save $ not having to throw away veggies that get too mushy after only a couple days.

Love your salad tips Berta! My mother made the best salads. She would put all the salad greens in a big bowl of ice water. Those greens would get soo crispy. She would drain and spin them until completely dry. She then took her garden cucumbers and would peel a few strips off but not all. She would take the tines of a fork and go down the length of the cucumber on 2 sides. When you cut the cucumber it had a pretty edge. Every time I eat a beautiful salad I think of her and the effort she put into making salads beautiful for our family.:)

I put washed lettuce into a large Ziplock air-filled freezer bag, close it, and shake while occasionally tipping the bag side to side. With bag tilted to one side, you will see water collect. Open the bag, tilt and shake again and when enough water accumulates, hold the tilted bag like it's a narrow funnel with both hands, and allow the water to run out into the sink or bowl. Just make sure no lettuce leaves escape the bag along with the water. Close bag; repeat the procedure about three or more times. Finally, close up the water-drained Ziplock bag and refrigerate for crisper lettuce; use within several days if extra is left over. it may take a little practice but it's a quick, no-mess method and there's no wet paper or kitchen towels to contend with.

I've been doing this for a while now and love it... It has really enabled my ability to have more salads, in a big way. Now, the last time I did it I blended kale, cut up cabbage, and spinach and I would actually take a few generous handfuls of it and sauteed in a pan really quick (covered with a little bone broth if you want to steam it or even make a soup) with some oil salt pepper and then throw a little meat on top and it was amazing. So if you're getting sick of just cold salads, that's another way to utilize this concept and have a little more variety.

Great video. Thank you. One added suggestion: I aways put about 1 tsp of salt in the bowl, before the first paper towel is put on the bottom. That's because I always wash my greens and fruits and veggies in a vinegar and water bath first. Vinegar or lemon juice is mandatory for organics. Even with a salad spinner and laying them out on towels to dry, there's always a bit of moisture in the leaves. On day 2, I change the salt and paper towels. Greens stay fresh for 7 to 10 days.

I usually make my own bagged salad with gallon size double zipper bags and would add a paper towel also to absorb moisture so I was surprised that this was her trick too :) If you can find them, I'd use a non-bleached napkins or paper towels for this though, just in case regular bleached ones could leech chemicals into the food. I also always wash any things I bought that were pre-bagged (like baby spinach) even if they claim it was pre-washed.

This is great info. I learned the above from my mom but to save money, I use coffee filters. Buy a big pack from Costco and it last a long time. I also use the filters for fruits and other vegetables. Makes them last much longer. Storing produce in glass containers makes a difference too.

OMG!, Berta Jay, I just discovered this video and I'm so glad that someone else prepares their salad greens like I've been doing for over 15 yrs. I also use paper towels to help preserve my other produce. For example, I wrap bell peppers in PTs and store them in "green bags". I wrap & store cakes this way, as well. The PTs absorb the moisture, and the green bags absorb the gas. I rarely have to toss fresh produce these days. The PTs can still be used to clean spills. I just let them dry, fold them and put them in a basket on my countertop. I have had produce last for up to 3 weeks using this method. It takes more time than just tossing them into the crisper drawer, but time is literally money in this case. Produce ain't cheap, and you're really getting your money's worth out of the paper towels, too. Thanks for sharing this valuable tip.

Hey there, Lorraine. This is so simple and it works.
I just did a simple test which I started on 12/6/18 at 2:45pm. I made a batch of greens with just arugula and baby spinach. I ate the last of those greens on 12/21/18 at 1/20pm! Although, there were 7 "wilty, moushy" leaves in the bowl, the rest was crisp and still completely edible. I have proven to myself, again, that this works wonderfully. Try this method and let me know what happens with your greens. Thanks so much for your comment.

Great that you put this info out there. Your vid came up in my feed today. I do a similar thing. I mainly buy washed greens in the bag. I roll out a few paper towels and spread the bag's contents onto the paper towel. I sort out the mushy or yellowing bits while it all laid out. Then, I roll the paper toweling up with the greens inside. Put it into a Debbie Meyer Green Bag and store it in the crisper. Lasts much longer. The fresher the greens the longer they last.

    • @notmebutyou8350

May I ask you how those Debbie Meyer bags work? She has some green boxes as well. I was thinking about ordering some.

    • @jayerscios

@@notmebutyou8350 They're okay. I will put a paper towel in the bottom to absorb any moisture. Better than some other things I've tried which didn't help at all. I haven't tried the green boxes.

I do something similar, but I put more veggies in besides lettuce. I also use the green plastic containers that extends the life of salad along with paper towels. There are some veggies I don’t put in like cucumbers because they go bad faster. 😘
