Having done some OpenGL programming in college, I would say the bottleneck is DMA transfer speed (after some distance, transactions start to fail, forcing a retry), not graphics processing speed. Once the 3D objects, textures and shaders have been sent to the card, moving the camera is not that hard, since you only need to send the new camera coordinates, the rest of the scene is still in VRAM and doesn't go through the cable again. I'm pretty sure changing scenes and geometry (i.e gaming) would be more of a problem as new data constantly flows through a poor connection. A one-scene benchmark is the best case scenario for crappy PCI-e links.
Don't know how many pins there are on a PCI-E express, but you should technically be able to transform that into three internet cables in terms of size. Then if the construction has Foil around every single wire(shielded) and it is twisted around one another, as if a rope. Basically PCI-E extension into wire cable. Then twist these cables around one another. You can probably reach quite a distance with this.
You’re correct. I’m glad somebody mentions this when the video came out. Running fps has zero to do with the length IF the textures are already ON THE CARD which is why the card needs the PCIe bus in the first place. Run a game that’s constantly pushing different textures to the card and you have a more legit test. And I just saw the end and they didn’t think to do this. Bleh.
@@Helveteshit "You can probably reach quite a distance." That's what Whitehouse said. "Wildman Whitehouse" they called him, and he's got an amazing Wikipedia page. It turns out that long wires or cables are electrically sluggish, and figuring out solutions to that problem was a huge part of early telecommunications and radio. (Whitehouse's solution was to over-volt the very first transatlantic cable trying get a higher "clock rate" out of it. It didn't survive.) To give you an idea of how difficult this problem is, Cat6a cable - the stuff for 10Gb/s Ethernet - has a 500 MHz bandwidth. 10G Ethernet uses 8 lanes and a very complicated modulation scheme to fit within that bandwidth limit, the cable is about $0.35 per foot (not horrible, but not that cheap either) and tricky to terminate properly. For all that trouble you can reach a few hundred yards. That's why physically large networks use different technologies: RF-modulation (cable, cellular) for reaching customers and fiber for backbones and bigger customers. DSL does use twisted-pair cable, but if that cable runs more than several hundred yards before hitting a DSLAM and being converted to fiber, you probably hate your DSL. PCI-e 3.0 uses a far simpler line code and pushes each lane to 8Gb/s. This needs the full 4,000 MHz of bandwidth that's typical for a double data-rate channel. The simplicity allows for much less latency in the digital logic that encodes and decodes it. A bundle of Cat6a can have enough throughput (bits per second) but you'll need some crazy glue logic to convert the signals to an electrical form that can be sent through those cables.
Let's try another couple PCI extension cables. (it works) Linus: AHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHH! (violently smacks head on table) AAAAAAAHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHH!!! (pulls out gun and shoots it everywhere)

The cooling element will do nothing to keep your graphics card cooler, and it may even expose it to higher temperatures than what it would normally experience due to heat build up. Linus did an episode on using a refrigerator to cool a PC already.
I'm surprised how far it actually was able to go. The bit error rate is probably atrocious! Thing to note, PCIe gen 3 devices go through a link training sequence to negotiate link speed and equalization settings between the transmitter and receiver. All gen 3 devices must be capable of running at gen 1 (2.5 Gbps) and gen 2 (5 Gbps) speeds in addition to gen 3 (8 Gbps) and must start at gen 1 speed and negotiate their way up to gen 3 speed. Chances are at the 3m distance (and even some of the shorter distances) the link was only running at gen 1 speed. It'd be interesting to put an oscilloscope on it analyze the signal quality. We have some pretty nice oscilloscopes at Tektronix that could easily do the job! 😃
Linus Tech Tips channel focuses more on entertainment than the technical aspect so they won't go that far and it seems that the framedrops were from thermal throttling not from the risers length watch 8:03 it's most likely thermal throttling

Now that we've figured out how far you can go with this, why not try doing that refrigerator pc again, but this time with just the gpu in the fridge or something? That would be interesting :P
It would turn out the same, a fridge is designed to keep things that are not producing heat at a constant temperature. Once you add a source of heat production you will overload the fridges cooling ability.
CutoutClips refrigerators aren't meant for constant cooling nor for large delta in temperatures. Wouldn't work, even with only a decent gpu. A small fridge might keep up with 50 watts of constant heat at most
shielding is imperfect. you need a LOT more than that dinky little foil to have exceptional signal shielding the connectors on the ends of the extender cables which are made out of plastic likely add a lot of loss and noise, so with some riser cable improvements they might be able to go out a good bit more distance. it only takes the signals ~12 nanoseconds to travel from one end to the other of those cables.

Chances are at the 3m distance (and even some of the shorter distances) the link was only running at gen 1 speed. It'd be interesting to put an oscilloscope on it analyze the signal quality. We have some pretty nice oscilloscopes at Tektronix that could easily do the job! 😃
Linus Tech Tips channel focuses more on entertainment than the technical aspect so they won't go that far
and it seems that the framedrops were from thermal throttling not from the risers length
watch 8:03 it's most likely thermal throttling
Well pcie 4.0 and 5.0 is but coming so maybe the extensions will be longer and longer due to to amount bandwith they got
As long as they use reqular copper wires, gen 4.0 and 5.0 are rather going to require shorter cables.
Nice info man, never knew about the bandwidth difference
Yeah, depending on the frequencies the data lines could behave like transmission lines, and there would be a lot of signal reflections and shit.
Now this is the quality content I subscribed for
"It teases me everytime" linus "welcome to my life" russian guy im dead
Weird to think that this is the video that dragged me back into LTT
Those remind me of the old hard drive IDE cables, man those things were fun to deal with...
make your own round IDE cables with electrical tape a stanley knife and lots of time . We have all done it :)
Andrew Joy yup thats what i did made things look a lot nicer and was way cheaper than buying round ide cables
Salvaged really long IDE cables and learned how to bend them. Run them flat along the side of the case.
I was just wondering can I plug that 1080 ti from my local store in my pc but not stealing it
You have a PC store 3 meters away from your home?
Or just buy 2 usb female/male cable 50m and a 50m hdmi cable xd
Snifer0070 I have a tent and 10 m away from that store is a my internet operater building
I hope I'm not the only one enjoying Ivan in these videos. Not sure if this video would make me giggle as much as it did without some good ol' russian "nyet" :D
El Diablo Rush b
El Diablo ceeke breke

NYET COMRADE STRAIGHT TO GULAG
@ 8:04 Linus's priceless face while he processes Ivan's answer...Classic. I'd love to see all the blooper reels...
I am not yelling at you, I am yelling with you.
-Linus
At first I thought that Ivan is a shy comrade coz Linus is very show off and screamy guy :D but then Ivan started also shouting XD almost like if he was an old member of LTT
Aurimas Knieža he kinda is. He worked with Linus a long time ago back at ncix
Comrade))))
Now that we've figured out how far you can go with this, why not try doing that refrigerator pc again, but this time with just the gpu in the fridge or something? That would be interesting :P
It would turn out the same, a fridge is designed to keep things that are not producing heat at a constant temperature. Once you add a source of heat production you will overload the fridges cooling ability.
CutoutClips refrigerators aren't meant for constant cooling nor for large delta in temperatures. Wouldn't work, even with only a decent gpu. A small fridge might keep up with 50 watts of constant heat at most
Commercial chiller. Common dudes, think Linus.
"I stay, holding my hand against the hot backside."
Words to live by.
Rapunzel Rapunzel, let down your risers!
Rubber Duck With Ithyphallophobia nice one
:D
You should've introduced some electrical noise from a cellphone call, electric lighters, brushed motor power tools etc. nearby.
Forssa1 they were shielded
I know, but test anyway.
Elijah Bush no shielding is perfect.
shielding is imperfect. you need a LOT more than that dinky little foil to have exceptional signal shielding
the connectors on the ends of the extender cables which are made out of plastic likely add a lot of loss and noise, so with some riser cable improvements they might be able to go out a good bit more distance. it only takes the signals ~12 nanoseconds to travel from one end to the other of those cables.
Use 2 PCIe to HDMI converters and the longest HDMI cable you can find between them
>PCIe to HDMI converter
This is called a GPU /s
pci-e to hmdi?
www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Half-size-Full-size-Mini-PCIe-To-2-PCI-32bit-slots-adapter-mini-pci-e-riser/710969_1816165189.html Unfortunately only mini PCIe
KanadeSana No way that can take the load, there's a reason gpu miners can't game
GPU miners can't game, where did you get that from?

"Which got us to thinking..."
Oh God, here we go. Somebody get a fire extinguisher.
Linus Tech Tips, " We do things, Because WHY THE F@CK NOT!!!!!!!! "
For the last test. Was it thermal throttling because you were blocking the air intake?
Cort3z Probably...
Just what I needed.
Only had a short hdmi, but lots of pcie extension from mining.
Thanks ltt
Loll I could put my computer far away and then have only my graphics card running on my desk. That's Ikea computing
Doing mildly ridiculous experiments is my fave genre of LTT video, and I love how excited Linus gets about them too 😊
Ivan was by far the best part of this video, best Slav 2017
It makes me believe that there is video on TH-cam almost about any topic... It kinda makes me happy.. because i am a curious person... Hence subscribed..
Keep it up guys...
Now i put my GPU to inside fridge
