    The 'foot warmer' were called (at least in Scotland) 'Pigs' I still have one I used as a child which was handed down by a Grandparent. If you're not familiar with them they are ceramic hot water bottles and were built like a brick privy. Most of them get damaged by being pushed out of bed by cold toes when they have cooled.

    19:11 I would advise caution on these. A lot of the hands of this time period will be painted with highly radioactive radium paint. I'd check these with a small geiger counter before opening them up for cleaning as the paint flakes are very hazardous

    • @monikabuttling-smith5234
      @monikabuttling-smith5234 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Al Thanks for the warning. I like it how I found it, so it will stay safely sealed, and I will stay radiation-free!

    • @stephencrowther524
      @stephencrowther524 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alpha and Gamma radiation. Don’t breath in or swallow paint dust/particles as Alpha is dangerous inside the body. Otherwise,nothing to worry about.. NB If the paint is no longer luminous, it is still radioactive ! ( For a around 1,000 years plus.) ✌️

    • @DidntKnowWhatToPut1
      @DidntKnowWhatToPut1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only know this because I deliberately seek out radioactive antiques. I have a fair number of radioactive clocks and watches, but I take precautions to avoid contamination.
      Another way to check without a Geiger counter is to shine a UV torch on the hands. If it is from between 1915-1945 and it glows green under the UV light then it is likely radium paint. Antique shops are absolutely full of them.

      @@monikabuttling-smith5234 A Great Aunt of mine was one of many women workers whom developed 'mouth rot' during the First World War due to the practice of inserting a paint brush into the mouth to make the hairs into a fine point for painting luminous alarm clock dials with radium composite. Took a surprisingly long time to associate the condition with this practice amongst workers.

    I cannot imagine going back the the township dump we used as kids. Now its still being used as a leaf and garden recycle center. The compost is being used as a cap for the original dump. The same goes for the city dump here where I live now. Now They take it 50 miles away to an old sand quarry and dump it there. 100 years from now, all those plastics will still be there. Back when that dump was made, glass was mostly used. Now its historic.

    Such amazing finds and wonderful friends! Beautiful bottles and pipes! The foot warmers are excellent finds! I loved so many of the treasures that I can't name them all. I covet, as always, the stoneware ink pots. Oh, and Sweet Poppy, loved when you had her on the Thames with you, such a sweet face. Til next time, take care! xx ~Jen

    Wow, what a bottle digger's paradise! Judging by the array of finds and the sheer volume of earth,, that tip was in use for a long time. Definitely some Victorian items in there, up thru WW2. A few things I wanted to mention...
    22:40 - AS Hinds are pretty common in the US. Funny to see one pop up so far from home.
    33:53 - In the left foreground there's a low-domed inkwell. Any thoughts on the year? I've found only one like it, here in the States, from an 1880s site. Does that seem about right to you?
    34:41 - The stoneware bottles with pour spouts look to be master inks. Very nice!
    Cheers! And happy hunting!

    Used to enjoy digging for bottles at a Victorian waste dump in Redditch where I live - has long since been built on unfortunately.
    Loved the blue poison bottles and the lemonade bottles with marbles in

      I live in Indiana also, and we live on lots of property and I took my deaf son out with shovels to what looked like a burn pit and he found a spoon a bottle and an old coin, I found an old perfume bottle from the forties shape of a heart. We had so much fun. Try looking for older mud spots and you never know.

    Simon, this is the biggest bottle / trash dump ive ever seen that was open. What a treasure trove for mud larks and pickers alike! I would have had to camped out and taken a steamer trunk home!! Such fun for all and I love the various bottles and odd bits found. You could almost do a full year of videos on that spot alone!

    I LOVE bottle dumps ! ANY dump really ! heheh ! When I was maybe 5 or 6, I crawled under the floor in a room attached to my parents barn in Massachusetts. It was dilapidated, caving in, a kids dream ! Anyway I found a bunch of buried bottles and a spittoon in perfect condition ! I still have it, after giving it to my mom when I found it, she gave it back to me about 10 years ago . Its a blue pottery spittoon, with a "ribbed" body, and a floral design around the lip. No name on it though. Love seeing all the treasures you find. Peace !
