Let's see what foreigners living in Hong Kong think of their experience with minibus, cha chaan teng and renting a tiny flat. How does it feel when things are always labelled with their country name? Getting use to HK's escalators speed? And what are the things that made our guests have a reverse cultural shock when they went back to their home country?

Yeah that’s the reason why mini bus was popular as it works like you are taking a taxi to almost where you want to go (along the route) by paying so much less, and is fast like hell that I used to take it to my western island home after say drinking from bars in CWB or Central as as Till said a late night you are tired (or drunk) you wanna arrive home immediately. Affordable efficient traffic.

Actually. it is sometimes OK to stay in restaurant more than 2 hours, IF the restaurant has very few people (normally around 3-5pm) and many seat are available. About ordering foods in restaurants, I know some restaurant waiters (especially in Mongkok or Jordon) may be very rude if people order food too slow. Anyway, in many estate restaurants, u can tell them "sorry I''ll call you after i make decision", then they will go and come back later

  • @tigro1973

Excellent discussion from a non-local point of view! Bear in mind though sometimes foreigners have a spectrum of experience that locals don’t. Living in a shoebox room sharing 3 bathrooms with 20 people belongs to a hidden, poor side the city unknown even to many locals. The minibus and chachanting experience belongs to many middleclass workers. Then you also have a large chunk of the well-to-do population who enjoys weekend buffets and high tea in hotels, leisurely hikers who enjoy the immense green space and islands, boisterous long yum cha and bbq with family and friends, travel to Japan, Thailand or other countries a few times a year. So there isn’t really a singular Hong Kong culture or experience especially since there is such a sharp divide among the social classes and people have such individualistic lifestyles. Many locals would experience similar shock when they cross those social boundaries!

(from mainland) before, I think the pace of living and studying in mainland is already very quick. but after I came to hk for my PhD, it's way much quicker here... So at first I feel like people around seems kind of “rude” sometimes, but later I realized they just wanna do things more efficiently. If you get used to it, you will find they (especially elder people) are actually very kind-hearted than you expected.

I do feel that fast pace in Hong Kong like escalator, mini bus, but about the 茶餐廳 I think it may varies among district or time period, as I always spend a cozy afternoon with a tea set, then I sit there listening to music or reading books for an hour, and personally I even prefer 茶餐廳 to spend time over a fancy cafe😂I like the milk tea so much ❤

Wherever you take a mini bus ( no matter if it is a green bus or red bus), you might take the following phases. 有落( sound as Yau Lok) it means that you want to get off soonest possible. Or 前面有落(qin mean yau lok) it means to find a place ahead so that you could get off. Anyway, you are speaking as quickly as most locals do.

Talking about the esculator, I just suddenly found out that I would need to have a preparation for myself to step on it about 2 months ago when I was in Helsinki because it has been too long that I didnt use esculator and not that fast. After realizing it, I found myself so weird coz back in those times, I dont even need to look at the esculator to walk on it even it moves so fast.

I'm HK born and bred, now living in Australia for over a decade. This reminds me how stressful it was taking a red mini bus, and if I sat at the very back behind those 'higher' seats I almost wanted to jump off and catch another one coz I kept thinking I couldn't shout loud enough omg. Also, absolutely nobody touches 'close' button in the lift here in Australia, people wait for the door to close

I’m in australia too and even though I grew up here I still smash the close button and get frustrated if people don’t press it 😂😂 i guess it’s the HKer in me

I still slam the close button non stop in australia or europe, I don’t like sharing it with pickpocketers or riff raffs. Depends on your personality haha

Great u guys like HK. 'Cha' restaurant is signature in HK, it's cheap but needs turnover. The rent is high and they need turnover to cover. That one in Jordan is one of the wrost tea restaurants in HK, do not stereotype. Enjoy yr stay here!

As a HKer grown up overseas I see the fast pace is a sign of respect. Fast service means nobody gets hangry in this country meaning higher productivity and respect for all! Hahahha omg I love food here. Every where else in the world calls it fast food, we just call it food😉

Hong Kong' s public transport and connectivity is THE very best in the world. No one even come close. Singapore and Tokyo could be ranked a distant 2nd and 3rd.

I left HK for years, returned for vacation and found myself moving like a snail as compared to the locals. Got sweared at walking thr the MRT, and humiliated in the mini bus. I had to yell back to the driver because he screamed at me in front of all the other passengers. Glad to know that it’s anxiety provoking for so many people 😂😅🤣

I am a local. FYI, green mini bus has regular stops you push red button driver will stop at next stop for you. Red mini bus has no regular stops, you need to tell driver where to stop for you, like name of a building or street corner etc.

I am a Hong Kong native, born and raised. Although I have been living in Hong Kong for decades, I feel a bit stressed when taking minibusses. I feel a strong need to take care of the fragile spirits of the minibus drivers.
If I call them too early, they may forget. Sometimes, when they are busy with their own loud radios, they can't hear me. If I call them too late, they may not be able to stop in time.
