Haha I love this! I was born and raised in Canada and grew up in a Cantonese speaking household. It's amazing how much more fluent you two are than me! Living in different areas really shape the fluency of the languages you communicate in.
When I came to HK I had a very Anglo centric view, I bumped into a few people from european descent that spoke native Cantonese. It was quite a shock. Now I will always speak to anyone in Cantonese first, because I do not want to make anyone feel like they're an outsider.
Although Cantonese is thriving, over the years more and more HK kids predominantly speak English and treat Cantonese as a secondary language. Probably international school students. They speak English to their Hong Kong parents (who were born and raised in HK), and their parents reply (somewhat) in English. Its sad for me to witness my mother tongue to be treated as a foreign language. We are glad you guys continue to keep up with Cantonese learning!
What i find TRUELY amazing about you guys is not that you speak cantonese well or English well, the fact that you guys speak BOTH languages like a local is fascinating! Usually one language is weaker than the other. I'm a British born Chinese (parents from Hong kong) and my cantonese definitely doesn't sound local. Loving your videos☺☺😍
Well done ladies, keep up with your great work. Despite I was born in HK with both HK parents and lived there for over 13 years, your Cantonese are far better than mine. All the best from Down Under. 👍
It's great to know that you guys speak our language brilliantly. I used to teach foreigners Cantonese at YMCA in TST years and years ago. I had a wonderful and unforgettable time teaching and meeting with so many people from different countries and cultures, and from all walks of life. I have very fond memories of my time there, indeed.
I don't think you should be saying "our language" nor it's polite to say that. She's a fellow Hong Konger. It's her language too. You probably heard her sharing how people mistreated her as a foreigner in HK, and yet you did the same.
Very interesting video. Being MULTI-LINGUAL is very powerful and also useful in everyday life . Cheers LADS ! I speak 5 languages and was born in Hong Kong, too.
cool。 Love your video! I can feel you, girls. I was born and raised in mainland China, living in USA. Mixed (Portuguese and Chinese). I speak sichuan dialect, mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and English. Hahaha, nobody is one thing.
Pam, your cantonese is near native when your mother tongue is really English. You're truly bilingual at least conversationally. That's a real feat. Well done! The other lady's Cantonese is excellent too. Very impressive given that Cantonese is a very hard language to master.
bilingual is a great things. when I dream, sometimes i speak in Chinese sometimes i speak in english. i love this cultural disorder. I am targeting french and German.
Great video ... you two together are just awesome. To answer one of your questions regarding ... "have you had any bad experiences while in HK" I have a good one, first off I'm a 3rd generation Chinese, my Mother was born in China and my Father was born in USA, but his father was born in China also. Anyway, I speak a little Cantonese from listening to my Mom when I was small, and learned a lot from my GF who is a HK'er. Although my Cantonese sucks, I still have a good sense if somebody is talking "shit" about me in Chinese. Its weird, but a lot of 2nd/3rd generation chinese have this "defense" skill. hahaha ... OK, so while I was playing Golf in Mission Hills Golf Course in China, my brother in law (who I always play golf with) introduced me as an American Chinese, to one of his friends who was also in our Golf Group. Immediately, he commented in Cantonese to my brother in Law, "Oh... he's a "dick head" ( of course he said it cantonese ) ... I immediately turned around and looked at him, and my embarrassed brother in Law told him ... "Watch it .. he understands Cantonese quite well". ( I actually don't, but I know enough you "shit head" ...) The guy was quite embarrassed, and as I found out later, a pretty lousy golfer. So, Careful people, we 3rd generation Chinese are pretty sneaky and just can't wait to embarrass your "ass"
Love the bubbly chemistry between the two of you and how you guys toggle between perfect Canto and Oxford English with such ease. Thanks for being candid about your unpleasant experience. And I really got a kick out of that 7 Eleven exchange (黑得過你嘅印堂) What a comeback. So glad you stood up for yourself. And that’s the way to bring about changes. One encounter at a time.
