AGAINST ALL ODDS // ACL Injury Kiteboarding Progression

  • So, it has already been my #2 year since i started kiteboarding. i never knew kiteboarding would have had so much impact on my life. It started out as just loving to watch kiteboarders fly in the craziest conditions. Couple years later i decided i wanted to do it myself as a bucketlist thing.
    This year started out as one of my best years ever. I came second in my first competition, my 1 year progression video did really well and i even became a teamrider just before 2022.
    2 months later it came all crashing down. i made a dumb mistake and improvised which led to me falling 3-4m on my board with my legs straight. normally we can ride away like it is nothing but i knew something was wrong as i felt my leg going nub in a split second.
    few months later i needed to get under the blade and get it fixed. i felt terrible and just smiled the pain away thru the time i wasn't able to get on the water. it was my outlet and where i could feel at my best. not having that and being stuck in crutches sucked.
    once i got back on the water i was more motivated then ever and couldn't stop. i fell in love with the sport all over in all its glory. the progression thru this short period speaks for itself.
    hope you enjoy and get inspired! if you have any questions regarding kitesurfing, ACL injury or my recovery. you can comment down below or dm me privatly on instagram :)

    You are a fighter 👏🏼👏🏼I was dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome for 1.5 years after that I am dealing with few psychological issues (depression , anxiety, fear) I am 2 months into kitesurfing and this is the medicine for everything ❤😎

    Ruptured my acl three days ago when my QR opened mid air and i came down like a rock from 4-5m with my board still on my feet..
    Before the accident it was my best session ever, landing my first kiteloops.. undescribable feeling.
    I've been super down the last days, but your video gave me all my confidence back, that I'll be able to recover, do sports and maybe even pull some loops again.
    Really important content for me right now, thank you so much ❤

      Damn... been there my man
      I had the same feeling and know how it is. I didn't know if i could ever pull a loop let alone get back at my old level.
      What helped for me was having a clear goal ahead of me. For me the physical recovery went quitte well but the mental part i heavily underestimated...
      Slowly build confidence and dont rush it. Of you ever need tips you know where to find me.
      Keeo it up and before you know it you are back to looping like a maniac 😆

    It's so good to see your journey to recovery man! As someone who recently broke his femur and knee while kitesurfing it's really hard to find any good information about recoveries and whether or not people even get back to the sport. Your video just gave me hope that maybe one day I would be able to get back to doing what makes me feel free again! Thank you!

      It takes time and it sucks (for now) that it takes soo long. Keep a goal in mind, focus on what you want to achieve and you'll be back in no time. Keep it up 💪🏼

    Just suffered a lateral meniscus tear myself. Struggling with knowing that this kite season is ruined. This video was a nice reminder that time heals, and I’ll be back relatively soon. Thanks.

    I broke my ankle and tore the ligaments in my foot apart. 13... 14 weeks after surgery I was back Kiteboarding.
    The most important thing is to keep training other parts of your body.
    I for myself did bodyweight exercises and ring training nearly every day.
    Later I discovered cycling was possible as well. Looking back it was actually a quite nice time 😅
    The first two weeks after the injury were fucked up, though.
    But if you get your ass up, you come back stronger than ever.

      Training for what is up coming is really important. Proper training will get you comfortabel physically and mentally to get where you once where.

    I m happy you recovered man! Keep going !
    I try to analyze the crash. What is your mistake exactly? It is hard to see on the video ? It looks like you bend sour knees and land?
    Thanks!

    • @stijnbrandtkitesurfing
      @stijnbrandtkitesurfing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will do!
      Short version: Had a bad take off and a weird gust. Felt like i could kinda butt check but was higher then expected and landed straight on my board. Going fully down on my left leg but my right was still extended and stuck in the binding cousing it to twist my knee and snap the acl...
      Rookie mistake with major concequences 🤷‍♂️

      @@stijnbrandtkitesurfing so any time you jump you have a risk of tearing your ACL if your feet/board are in the wrong position when you land? is there an easy way to always land in the water without injuy as long as you don't try to continue boarding when you land? e.g. trying to cannon-ball into the water or something?

  • @Ryy22
    @Ryy22 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I dont get it, what happend? It seems like just a simple jump, landing a bit rough but not that hard? Did you rotate? Please explain more, so much unclear

    • @stijnbrandtkitesurfing
      @stijnbrandtkitesurfing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Theze kind of landings normally don't have any impact on us and happen regularly. In this case i had my kite all the way to the side and landed with my legs extended. My left leg buckled which caused my right leg to twist while extended stuck in the binding. This is the weakest place for the ACL causing it to tear in one go.
      Hope this gives a clear image 😅
