    Very helpful for a first time user. One thing I can add is that if you're using a shared green egg - pull the ashes out of the bottom flue with a grill cleaner (into a bucket) if your coals are not lighting well or if the grill has old charcoal in it.

    just a quick tip, if you put the big green egg logo on the daisy wheel to the rear of the cooker you don't have to reset it every time the lid is opened

    Good video. In the past I used the weber starter cubes but now I just hit it for about 30 seconds with a propane torch.

    that only time I ever use my daisy wheel is when I want to keep the temp around 250 degrees for long slow cooking. Other than that, keep the top open and use the bottom vent to control heat.

    another thing I don't do is arrange the lump. I just dump it in, level it out, and start the fire using a propane trash burner torch. I can have it up and running in less than ten minutes and never have a problem with hot spots. Chef Jerry, using my Big Green Egg for the past 14 years

    Malcolm, I do it almost the same way in my Kamado Joe. I only wait about 10 min until I close the lid so I don’t wait as long as you but that may be slowing me down. I use the wax Webber starters since they are 1/4 the price of those style which I have used in the past.

    You should do one of these tutorials for offset smoker. I’m curious how long it takes to get fire going and how much maintenance required to keep low and slow fire going. Thanks!

    I just build a small wood fire in mine. When it's glowing red coal and reduced to 250 add meat n close. Once it hits 165, remove meat to side, add more hot coals from hand held chimney srarter close lid.
    The reason I start w wood fire is it always adds flavor to the raw meat best.

    one more tip for you BGE owners. To make is easy to watch the temp, turn the temp guage so the desired temp is straight up. That way all you have to do is look at the Egg guage from any distance and if the needle it straight up, your desired temp is showing.

    Not mentioned in the video but something to know, you should wait for the "bad smoke" to clear before putting your food on, especially when all of your lump is fresh out of the bag.

    Your microphone might be broken, I'm hearing a constant high pitched noise.

      The audio sounds fine ... ya must have somethin' else goin' on.

    • @chimpartwork
      @chimpartwork 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      How old are you? My dad didn't hear it (he's 48) but my buddies (all ~15) did hear it.
      You can't hear high frequencies when you're older.

    • @Kmuggle
      @Kmuggle 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Paul Jordan
      Ha! It's certainly possible. I'm a bit of a musician so I downloaded an mp3 of the audio, imported it into my recording platform and slapped an analyzer on it. On the spectrum analyzer there's a peak at about 15.7KHz. On the frequency equalization curve, depending on the playback location, it's a little peaky and has some constancy to it compared to other frequencies. Overall the frequencies are truncated at around 16.3KHz. When listening through my recording platform with reference speakers ... only when boosting the volume well over 0db (I went as high as +12db) ... can I hear a high pitched noise ... and then only at certain locations in playback. At volume levels below 0db playback was normal and without any artifacts.

    • @chimpartwork
      @chimpartwork 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have no idea what all of that means, but yeah there is a noise. Haha.

    • @Kmuggle
      @Kmuggle 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Jordan
      It means I can find a suspect frequency that produces a high pitched tone ... that I can't hear at normal or even loud (0db aka clipping aka highest volume before signal distortion starts) volume levels ... but that I can hear (in some of the audio stream) when I turn up the volume until my speakers explode. Other people are now reporting the sound on other videos by Malcom ... and they all sound fine to me at 0db or less listening levels ... so I'm wondering if there may be some system specific reason ... such as the codec or the player ... or whatever.
