Flying a Taylorcraft in the backcountry with Lacy

  • We headed out to central Michigan to meet Lacy and her Taylorcraft. We spent a few hours jumping airports in the Stinson 108 followed by some formation flying and as the sunset we had to see who was the better pilot. Is it really fair to put a 165HP Stinson 108 up against a 85HP Taylorcraft? Watch and find out. The Great Michigan Bush Co. is traveling throughout Michigan meeting new pilots and having a fun time flying our vintage taildraggers.

    My dad had a 1946 BC12D....N43140. Flew with him many times as a kid in the mid 60s. Dad passed in 74 and the Tcraft went to Alaska where it is today. I ran the N number and got the address of the owner.... sent a letter about the status of the plane about 5 years ago....never heard back from them.....lots of memories watching this vid....thanks for the post

    Love the Stinson! Back in 1978, I owed a 108-2. It flew great and was fun to fly. I remember how good the roll rate was.
    At 60 mph due to the slots in front of the ailerons, roll was like a 172 at 120mph! One problem was the vibration range for the prop. Think it was between 2150 and 2350 rpm. Because of this, I had to cruise at 2400 that consumed 11 g.p.h. At .89/gallon, it was costing me over $10/ hour to fly! Because of this, I went back to a Champ (I was working for 4.50/hr. as an A&P) . I always thought that putting a 180 Lycoming in that plane would have been the ultimate solution.

    • @GreatMichiganBushCo
      @GreatMichiganBushCo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you fly at any lower RPM even with a wood prop the cylinders have problems. The Franklin like to run wide open. Old engine technology. I am looking to replace with a Lycomong.

    It's serendipity!
    Kinda off-topic, but not really?
    I've built a 1/6 scale (56"span) R/C model of a clipped-wing Taylorcraft. Test flights to begin at my discretion.
    Meanwhile, I'm building a 1/10 scale Stinson Voyager for some electric park flying fun.
    So, this is gravy for me.
    Stay safe and keep 'em flyin'!

    Am just a little curious as to how you have a postwar BC-12D (The N-number, fin/rudder and panel layout all bear that out) that appears to have the prewar door ... i.e. pentagonal not trapezoidal. It isn't like the two were interchangeable. (Is it also plywood?) Also next re-covering (note the hyphen; I seem to be the only aircraft-owner who knows what it's for) you might look into a "D" (stamped frame) rear window. Weren't they standard on all first-gen postwar T's?
    And btw love the skylight! If could I would get one for my '41. Thanks for the video. Always great to see one in flight.

    • @wmfife1
      @wmfife1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreatMichiganBushCo Thank you! Well I know mine, anyway. Love the plywood doors and the solid feel they give. Never knew why they weren't continued on the -12D. (Aren't the tube doors fabric covered?) But all the documented photos I've seen of postwars show the modified (trapezoidal) door that exposes the tubing running diagonally across the bottom instead of being enclosed by the frame. Personally though I can see why some might prefer the original one... or at least a tube one of that shape. Not every wartime mod (IMO) was an improvement.
