I saw them in 1976 open for John Denver at the Cow Palace in SF. Before they performed this song (which was just starting to get airplay) one of the female vocalists explained that the title came from a menu they had seen when they were on tour a year before. According to the story, they pulled into a greasy spoon to refuel the bus and eat lunch, and the cafe menu had a special of the day called "Afternoon Delight". She said they all had a good laugh, and ordered it, but that it wasn't very good. She continued the story to say that "that's when we decided to write a song about what Afternoon Delight could be, would be, and should be." The crowd roared. The song was playing on the radio later that night as we drove home. And the rest is history. One of the top 10 songs of that year, if not the decade.
One of the men in the group helped John Denver write the song, 'Take Me Home Country Roads". At the time, neither Denver, nor the guy who helped him write the song had ever been to Virginia. Many people think the song is about the state of West Virginia, but it's actually about the western part of the state of Virginia. You know because the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River, which are mentioned prominently in the song are not located in the state of West Virginia, but are found in the western part of the state of Virginia.

Well ya I'll give the idea that the lyrics were clean and not derogatory. But they were still singing about having sex in the afternoon which was a bit of a controversial thing to sing about. This was a time when it was still a bit shocking to acknowledge anything to do with sex anyways plus the idea of being free enough about sex to admit that it can be done anytime. Don't get me wrong I don't think it's bad to sing about any of that but I think it's funny that a band singing about having sex could be seen at the time as pure enough to be had on a family friendly event since it shows they didn't get the whole point of the song. And don't get me wrong. I'm not against the point of the song. I don't take away from the talent etc. But this song isn't as pure as it seems, as people then (and obviously now still it seems) think it is.

I picked up on the sexual lyrics right away, and I bought the single so I could torment my dad with it. Drove him absolutely crazy, as I knew it would. He especially hated this song because it was everything he loved: the lilting, multi-part harmonies, the catchy melody and the light rock sound could not have been better tailored to his musical taste, but he HATED anything about sex being sung or discussed in public (except for a half-hour each week on ‘All In The Family’, for some reason). So he thought this song was disgusting. I could put him in a bad mood just by spinning the record in my room, with the stereo set at a normal volume. He’d lose his shit, haha. Fun times! Pure? Ummm nothing wrong with what their singing about but ummm, ya.. Lol
@Lanier2369 In other words, they were clean with lyrics, and nothing derogatory. Make sense
Way more talent... I pointed that out; they said ok boomer

When you say hello to people
You naturally get that hello back 😊

These were the happiest days of life.
Ignorance is bliss. If half those people knew the reality of things, they wouldn't be so carefree.
Lots of great 1970s music
Watching my favorite 1976 song in November 2023. I was 27 in 1976, loving life, single plus hitting the disco clubs every weekend, the girls AH the beautiful young ladies😊
Who else is watching this in 2020 wondering where these good feels and good times have gone?
I'm jamin to it and oh the memories of my teens and the people in my life back then. No rioters and protesters looting and burning down cities. This is the only way we can go back to a good life is through the music we adored then and continue to appreciate now. Take care and keep playing those 8 track flash backs. One of the more powerful songs of the seventies love every minute of it.❤❤
Bout to turn 18, my whole world was about to change. Their vocals blended so well together, how could you not like this song? And just being blessed enough to grow in the 70's.
I was 12 years old when this song came out, didn't realize what they were singing about. Loved this song..still do, great harmonies!
Me too and agree 🎉😂
Fun times!
I still have that record.
How's your skyrocket these days?
Summer of '76 ... this song always takes me right back in time .
