    As a suicide survivor, demon hunter John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) has literally been to hell and back -- and he knows that when he dies, he's got a one-way ticket to Satan's realm unless he can earn enough goodwill to climb God's stairway to heaven. While helping policewoman Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) investigate her identical twin's apparent suicide, Constantine becomes caught up in a supernatural plot involving both demonic and angelic forces. Based on the DC/Vertigo "Hellblazer" comics.

    I absolutely love this scene. I always wondered why the possessed man was so nervous and confused, and this scene answers that question brilliantly. John is astrally projecting himself backward in time and surfing his way closer and closer to the present. The possessed man can sense John's intrusion, but doesn't have any idea what's actually going on until John reaches the very instant of the present where the astral/psychic distance between them is at its lowest point, allowing him to reach out and attack. One little detail I've always liked is how the color grading starts off orange and gradually gets more and more green as John catches up to the present.

      I don't quite think so. By the moment John sees the possessed scavenger in the hospital, it is the present (which we know because of the presence of guarding demons in the hospital and the fact that Angela is shown to be dropped to the hospital's pool AFTER John and Chas has left the club). I Think the ritual does exactly what it's meant to do: To help the mage amplify their psychic powers to break the barrier and "surf" or swim up the timestream to the most recent past (facing the rising sun at the East, as you will) up to the point of present (washed ashore), which is where Mammon feels his presence and tries to capture John which prompts him to ask for a more powerful mage to save him (yank him out of water).

    • @wilcals5294
      @wilcals5294 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      @@kennethhwang3425 Dude watch again 1:37. It's the part where John was staring behind the possessed guy who just dug the spear. Remember the first scene in this movie where the possessed found the spear then suddenly held it close to him and looks behind panicked like someone was watching him. It was revealed in this scene that it was John who was watching. You can see it in most instances in this clip where the possessed guy will look behind, confused like he's being stalked. Finally the hospital scene, it's in the present so he was able to catch John because their timeline is matched.

    A breath of fresh air in a genre that tends to get reduced to sloppy, disjointed nonsense, Constantine is remarkably atmospheric and well made. It also has a plot that is actually interesting with multi dimensional characters and a great cast that creates some truly memorable scenes. Remarkably, it was the directors debut title, and his best work to date afaik. The critics didn't agree with me at all though, and typically stated the opposite of what I thought. I have no idea what that is about. According to them Constantine was a bit of a failure, whereas Black Panther for example was a masterpiece. Go figure.

      @@SweetZombiJesus What I think @vramronald meant is that they believe the occult/satanic elements of the movie were portrayed relatively more accurately than in some other films.
      Often creators of movies in the horror genre will take things from lore about the occult, etc, and then seriously misconstrue it, dumb it down, or completely change it up because they think what they're doing with it will work better, or they simply don't care to be accurate to the lore, even when it might prove to make the movie that much better.
      Of course, being 100% true to lore isn't always the best move for a film or other media. As a famous author once said, "First get your facts straight. Then distort them at your leisure." If a creator is able to really understand the lore that they're pulling from, then they can change what they need in order to make it work in service of what they're creating.

    I like how almost every spell in this movie is physically demanding. Either the host has to use artifacts and relics to carry out a spell, or an offering is to be made to bring about magic. In both cases it leaves the host vulnerable and physically exhausted. Constantine goes through this painful process of astral projection just to see where the demon is headed and nearly gets killed in action. Real hardcore occult shit ☠️
    Whereas Doctor Strange just needs to read a book on Astral Projection and voila 👻!
    Vertigo Comics 'warning us even before doing the spell' and indulging in the occult, unlike their Marvel counterpart 😂

      There may be two phenomenon involved. One may be you have precognition power, which means your subconscious can generate a very precise simulation of the most likely outcome of the future. The other may be that you are receiving visions and data from other entities while you sleep, about the future. In both cases, I would tell you that the future is never written on stone, and to beware what visions you chose to believe.
      It could also be a very imaginative brain, nothing out of the normal lol.

      I think he spit in the water puddle to dilute the very conductive water with alcohol, which does not conduct electricity. I believe they did this to dampen the shock and thus bring John to a near death experience, but not outright kill him.
